Tom Lee 4 disposals, 1 mark, 1 tackle
what a waste!
what a waste!

Interested in shenton, seems a cut above VFL but perhaps the type to not make it. TDL is just depth. Great for markworth, hit the ground running in the VFL and a position in our forward line calls.
A lot better performance, the young forwards get to learn the craft together before they hit the big time. Lee's workrate is a worry.

If you are planning a late change, then you would leave 2 players out of the 2nds… you always need a genuine emergency in case of a twinge in the warm-up.saintspremiers wrote:ok cool, So Ross in for Gilbert tonight.Sobraz wrote:He is. Perhaps just working on fitness.
Markworth excellent. Works hard, smart & good use.
Spencer hot & cold, but his hot is boiling. Great to watch.
Markworth to debut for the Saints next week.

Re: Sandy Squad for Northern Blues
Hard to understand why given that he's probably a couple of good performances away from getting a game. Surely he must realise that? It's not as though Beau is tearing the house down right now.magnifisaint wrote:He's a lazy bastardSolar wrote:Interested in shenton, seems a cut above VFL but perhaps the type to not make it. Re: Sandy Squad for Northern Blues
I think ppl are being a bit harsh on Lee, by all accounts he missed most of the pre-season through injury...
in terms of fitness, that puts him a long way behind.
Realistically that means that he will probably be at Sandy for 6 weeks or so before he starts to push for seniors. We need to be realistic with our expectations.
The positive to this is that it means opportunity will be presented to Maister and Longer (when fit). Beau in particular is fighting for his career so lets see what he can do. It also openss the door for White to have a taste of seniors.
Good to see Markworth out and about
Glad Dunnel was prominent too
Weller will have to wait as both Eli and Jones did well
No Ross (DNP?) was disappointing
At least Siposs got some goals though he and Milera would now be behind Eli as a FP and have to push their way in.
All in all a good w/e for the club

Pretty pleased with markworth.
Is shenton a rookie ? I see him as cover for Gilbo and Ray.
Great signs for Zebs

Tom Lee did nothing in VFL last year, hardly ever showed form people would want to get selected in seniors. He's just the type of player that can step up as the bigger AFL grounds suit him better.skeptic wrote:I think ppl are being a bit harsh on Lee, by all accounts he missed most of the pre-season through injury...

Because he kicks so well if he got 8 possessions in the ones he would probably kick 80 goals in a season.

Re: Sandy Squad for Northern Blues
Markworth - his body looks AFL standard now. Got some contested clearances and uses his pace. His decision marking is very quick and precise also. I was really impressed by his performance - just reads the game well.
Shenton did some nice things. Disposal and decision marking questionable at times.
Siposs drifted in and out of game. Came off injured but reappeared to take a great contested mark.
Lee didn't do much. A few time crumbed the ball nicely. Does good things whe he gets it.
Bruce did alright when the ball came. Got acknowledgement from the coach for his blocking skills in marking contests.
Weller very vocal at the breaks. Has a bit more speed than I imagined. Got the ball a bit but I think quieter in the second half.
Dunnel plays that lead up HHF role so well. He reads the game beautifully. Even took a few nice contested grabs. Skills let him down a few times and they were costly. Would do some really nice things and make the play - then turn it over. Got told by the coach.
Longer played really well. He looks like a great ruckman taking some nice contested marks. Go a decent bit out against Wood. Gets his hand on the ball in the ruck constantly too.
White played well from what I believe is second game. Took three to four contested marks and took the game on. Seemed to go at 3/4 pace when he was pushing forward w/ the ball but was enough. He was really impressive. Might have got caught once but what he does w/ it more than compensates. He was easily our best tall forward. Deep and when pushing to the wings.
TDL did nicely as he does.
Minch played mostly midfield and got a bit of the ball. Seems really heavy from afar.

Thanks Spinner, very much appreciated - sounds like it was a pretty solid performance?
Any particular thoughts on big Johnny Holmes? And did Simpkin and Milera get out on the park as well?

Re: Sandy Squad for Northern Blues
I thought Simpkin was excellent. Rarely, if ever beaten, very hard at the ball and man, and reads the play well. Took some very good one on one marks by out-bodying his opponent. Disposal was always safe but sound.
Markworth was the absolute standout for mine.. Cannot wait to see him in the big league.
Lee is an interesting one, as although he literally did nothing in terms of possessions, he was very vocal and showed constant leadership of the forward line, always telling White, Holmes, Sip etc where to position and when to go... It was as if he was an on field playing coach more focused on set up and his fitness as opposed to getting the ball himself. Perhaps he was working to more of a personal plan.
Bruce was ok. Needs to improve disposal by foot. Not a certainty to play much AFL level footy this year IMO.
Longer is a lump of a ruckman. Very different type to Hickey, in a good way. Sort of creates the spine of a pack as opposed to jumping into one, but always stands strong and clunks big marks. Will be a very good player.
Siposs has every tool but he seems to be missing that drive that kids like Dunstan and Saunders already have.. It took him pretty much getting a broken jaw (he was fine but it looked dicey for a bit) for him to really want it and take a brilliant pack grab and convert. He is a frustrating one as it is all there ready to go.
We will all enjoy the Spencer show once it's ready for release. It may be 12 more months, but it will be worth the wait.

Simpkin gave a standard performance. Did the same solid things.
Milera linked up well.
Holmes was impressive to me for what I was expecting. There was one time he went to pick up a rolling ball only for it to roll right out of his hands into the path of the opposition. It was just a clear example of the oval ball - I found it funny but his positioning and athleticism was all there to pick up, he just had no anticipation that it may not go straight. This means nothing, just sticks in my memory.

From his thoughts it sounds like they all deserve a game in the seniors next week! He might be sugar coating it a bit.saintbrat wrote:Paul Hudson is giving a weekly review on Saints players at sandringham
