Re: Good Friday Footy in 2015!
Good Friday services for most Christian denominations start at 3.00.
Not personally a huge fan of the Royal Children's telethon, but if it stops Good Friday footy I'm all for it!

So why is that an issue?I Love Peter Kiel wrote:Good Friday services for most Christian denominations start at 3.00.

It seems that most of those who would go to church on Good Friday would not go to the footy anyway on Good Friday.

Yep but what cant they play day games. Surely that isnt the reason? I have a BBQ every good friday and I can assure no one sneaks off to church and there are usally 60 or so people here.

So the Saints can't play on Good Friday because they're all at your barbecue.plugger66 wrote:I Love Peter Kiel wrote:Good Friday services for most Christian denominations start at 3.00.

I'd be ok with it, I'm Christian but celebrate my Christianity daily and I'm not defined by ceremony and long standing festivals.
Still doesn't hurt to have a footy free day to focus elsewhere, if it went ahead though, I'd likely flick it on to have a look see.

They can play. Give us something to watch. I wouldnt have anyone playing but thats just me. It will happen for sure and with a few years. The problem is I doubt they will pick a bottom side to play in the game.

I think you might be overestimating the number of observant Christians in this city.I Love Peter Kiel wrote:Good Friday services for most Christian denominations start at 3.00.

Seems selfish to me to be so hell bent on not having any football matches on a certain day because it doesn't fit in with your personal beliefs...I Love Peter Kiel wrote:Good Friday services for most Christian denominations start at 3.00.

Anyone who would prefer to pray can continue to do so, just like any devout Jews can miss Sunday games if they feel it is important.
I dare say the percentage of genuine devout practising Christians who would avoid watching Good Friday football will be low... Just a guess though, we'll find out soon enough I think.

Re: Good Friday Footy in 2015!
You don't have to be a devout Christian to go to church on Good Friday.
You don't have to be Christian to appreciate having one day which is free of the endless verbal diarrhoea coming from such 'experts' as Hutchie.
I didn't say you can't watch the game if it's on that day. You can have all the footy you like . No doubt greed and the almighty dollar will eventually triumph.
Just don't expect me to be there.
BTW if the day is completely meaningless, then it probably shouldn't be a holiday.

FYI the Jewish sabbath goes from Friday evening to Saturday evening.dragit wrote:Seems selfish to me to be so hell bent on not having any football matches on a certain day because it doesn't fit in with your personal beliefs...I Love Peter Kiel wrote:Good Friday services for most Christian denominations start at 3.00.

Thought you would have known that former Dees benefactor Joe Gutnick ( who belonged to an orthodox sect) freely admitted that he wouldn't be able to go to a Saturday afternoon Grand Final if the Dees made it.

Hutchie is never on game day is he? The more days of footy the better if you're trying to avoid him.I Love Peter Kiel wrote:You don't have to be a devout Christian to go to church on Good Friday.

The Queens Birthday is also totally meaningless, but it's nice to have a long weekend in June.

Meaningless?kosifantutti wrote:The Queens Birthday is also totally meaningless, but it's nice to have a long weekend in June.
The Queen is our Queen, Queen of Australia.
Her "birthday" is a chance for us to pay homage to this icon, a rock in a sea of shifting sands.
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

Re: Good Friday Footy in 2015!
Simple
Christian don't go.... They have a choice
Can we not have games on my daughters birthday... I can't go... Or on days I play footy... I can't go?
What crap
Just play.... And I bet the crowd will roll up!

These wetre your words on this thread.
It's obvious that none of you realise why it would have to be a night game
So are you saying it should have been obvious to all of us that you couldnt attend due to you going to church? I dont get it. Why cant it be a day game. And again i wouldnt bother having it but not because of church because plenty of people have reasons they cant go to the footy.

Re: Good Friday Footy in 2015!
its not even the queens real birthday on the long weekend.
we dont need this big friggin argument every bloody year about how its degrading, poor form blah blah blah
im pretty sure that even some people that believe that a guy was nailed to a cross many years ago still might actually go and watch a game of footy on good friday
i actually find it odd that its called Good Friday
i wouldve thought that being nailed to a cross isnt all that, errrr.....good

Thanks, I had the day wrong… Yes I remember Gutnick not going or watching games, even though he was president of the club. How did he even get into football? Surely football was played on a Saturday every week when he was young?I Love Peter Kiel wrote:FYI the Jewish sabbath goes from Friday evening to Saturday evening.dragit wrote:Seems selfish to me to be so hell bent on not having any football matches on a certain day because it doesn't fit in with your personal beliefs...I Love Peter Kiel wrote:Good Friday services for most Christian denominations start at 3.00.

I respect Joseph Gutnick & your dedication… but I just don't expect to abide by your belief systems.
I am sure people were outraged when football was first played on Sundays too.

It's about what other sports do and being competitive. If other sports play Good Friday then so should we.I Love Jesus Christ wrote:You don't have to be a devout Christian to go to church on Good Friday.

The reason why this season kicks off mid March this year is to compete with the NRL season that started already last week.
GWS and GC were set up as a competitive response to Soccer and the NRL.
That's business. Religion is irrelevant in this regard. Sure, you wouldn't play a game on Good Friday if the crowds and TV ratings were terrible, but it's hardly as big as Christmas Day for a huge majority of the faith.

The concourse at Eithad is used for lots of different things on Good Friday. Seems logical to have a lot of the channel 7 stuff there like they do and then have St.Kilda v Melbourne on in the afternoon.

I have it on good authority that Christ did not say when he was nailed to the cross "Whatever you do on this day do not play Australian Rules Football"...matrix wrote:its not even the queens real birthday on the long weekend.

If we ever become a republic, there won't be any more queens birthday holdiay ( or kings birthday which is what is actually is for), or no more commonwealth games ( becoming irrelevant now anyway lol).
So filth and Melbourne (if they still exist) will have to play on Good Friday lol
