Champions
Been having a discussion in another thread on who people see as champions at our club. I have said that in the last 10 years the only 2 champions we have had are Lenny and Rooy. I rate players like BJ, Dal, Minley and chips as very good to great players. Would love to hear who others think have been champions in the last 10 years and the reasons. My reason for those 2 players is I think you have to be consistantly a great player over a period of seasons and not just in certain games. Also playing in a tough position helps as well and also how you play the game.

In a direct comparison with Leon Davis the only area he is way ahead is average goals per game Davis 1.2 Milne 2.09
1% Davis 1.46pg Milne.8pg
Brownlow votes Davis .013pg Milne .014
contested possessions Davis 45.53 Milne 4.95
Tackles Davis 2.75 Milne 1.71
Disposals Davis 13.48 Milne 11.87
I do not consider Davis anywhere near a champion!

its just the total of goals. I know the more you play the more goals you will kick but to be in the top 30 or 40 of all time is an amazing effort and shows how consistant he was. I certainly can understand others seeing it differently though.

Depends which century.Spinner wrote:Would they make a club team of the century?
That narrows it down a lot.
If we start from 65 onwards Roo will have to play on the flank as Doc ain't getting pushed out of CHF!

Thats a great point. If you make a 100 year team surely you are a champion of the club. Milne, Lenny and Rooy probably all make it if they did one now. Loewe and harvey would make it as would Plugger. Not sure Winmar and Burke would. Winmar maybe. The rest that have been mentioned would have probably no hope.

Re: Champions
Should probably be team of the last 40 or 50 years to be objective as most of the previous generations can only be judged by stats and other peoples writings.
I suspect if John Coleman had played 50 years earlier we wouldn't rate him as highly due to relatively short career.

Re: Champions
No disrespect to Milney but I reckon a team of the century would have a surplus of rovers and wingers who some of whom would have to be played out of position. Suspect small forward pocket between Ross Smith & Winmar.plugger66 wrote:Spinner wrote:Would they make a club team of the century?

I reckon 574 goals suggests you are just about certain to play.

Re: Champions
Roo and Len are Legends
So is Harvey, Lockett, Stewart, Baldock,
They are amongst the greatest players in 150 years... I think that qualifies above a StK Champion.... Which generally refers to a long time great player
Loewe, Burke, Winmar, Barker, Ditterich, Smith, Howell, Young.... And modern day greats are all StK champions IMO
What qualifies IMO
Sustained excellent output
Legend
A player that in time, will be revered when spoken of... And are not only top level Saints but the best player in the land att

Well this thread is about champions. Start your own thread on legends. I have champion as the top grade when you play. A legend is after you retire as per nearly every footy club or comp.

Re: Champions
Milne was a champion as he reinvented himself to span eras. Harves, Plugger, Lenny, Rooey yes. Fisher,Winmar, Burke, Joey, Dal and Goddard all very very high level players but not quite.
Milney might be seen as a champion further down the track.
