Re: Pick your 22 for Round 1 vs Melbourne
Thinking about it a fair bit, I think I'm happy with that side I listed. Ray is perfect on the wing opposite Savage.
I wouldn't player Maister over Stanley (if you're really talking about giving some games for the next bunch, plus Stanley can also play Ruck).
Bruce would come in if one of those defenders are injured (say Gwilt).
I think Geary in the middle would add a little bit of grunt, I don't think he should be in the backline since Webster has basically taken that spot (along with Newnes and Wright so to speak).
Schneider and Siposs are both imo v.good HFF that can be a leading option / take a mark.
Ross missing out, can't find a spot unless CJ is really out of form. Every team has a tagger generally speaking.
Dunstan would be my Sub.

Plugger has to play at Full Forward - sorry Koz…
Also Con has done so many weights in the country over the summer that he can't run… probably good as a high impact supersub.
plugger fullback is a master stroke as absolutely nothing will get passed him and he will defend absolutely everything.
he will also make them earn every kick. and then give the traditional whack by the ear even when they do mark it.

Re: Pick your 22 for Round 1 vs Melbourne
Just wondering.
A lot of people on here say 'kids shouldn't be gifted games' and should be picked on form and old guys need to be pushed out etc etc etc.
But most people seem to have Gwilt in their selected sides. Is he being picked on reputation alone? Hasn't shown any form in over 2 years now. Are we picking on form for youngsters but older guys get 'credits in bank'. Seems very inconsistent. Now I like Gwilt as much as anyone but I dont think he shown anywhere near enough to be a walk-up start.

Not if you think you either cant win or the older guy is only just ahead of the young guy. Just dont gift games to anyone though.

Re: Pick your 22 for Round 1 vs Melbourne
What could be interesting v Melbourne if possible Delaney (shoulder), Gilbert (foot), Milera (foot), Montagna (susp), Pierce (back), Steven (foot), White (hamstring
B: Wright Maister Webster
HB: Dempster Roberton Fisher
C: Savage Armo Dunnell
HF: Schneider Stanley Geary
F: Hickey Roo Gwilt
Ruck: Longer Jones Curren
IC: Saunders Templeton Ray Dunstan
Emg: Simpkin
Gwilt is a dead loss in the backline I reckon, so off to the forward line, Roo to drag their best defenders back to goal and leave Stanley and Schneider some space up the ground, Dunnell played well against Melb last season and deserves a go on the wing.

Speaking of 'bests'
has anyone looked at M Sheehans top 50?
I must the innovation where you can click on 'agree' 'underrated' and 'overrated' is quite cool

Re: Pick your 22 for Round 1 vs Melbourne
I'd never ever play Maister in the backline again, have you forgotten what happened over in WA against the Eagles, was a terrible performance.spert wrote:What could be interesting v Melbourne if possible Delaney (shoulder), Gilbert (foot), Milera (foot), Montagna (susp), Pierce (back), Steven (foot), White (hamstring

I doubt Templeton gets a game ahead of Newnes and Lee. I also do not believe we can afford to play 3 tall rucks, unless Stanley stays at FF (and takes Maisters spot in the side), so I don't think Longer will get a game in round 1 unless there's a strategic match up for it. Being at Edihad we don't have to worry about the rain, but yea, watching Hickey, Roo, Stanley might be a bit eh, depends if Melbourne have running defenders I guess.
As for Gwilt in the forward line, I don't think that will happen. Richo said he's been rarely beaten in the backline one on one. Not sure if I'd have Dunnell in the side unless, interesting player, but needs to cement himself somehow.

Re: Pick your 22 for Round 1 vs Melbourne
Hmm, with Lenny suspended I would have brought Weller in...with Mav also suspended we are going to be horribly, horribly undermanned in the midfield. I must say, Tom Ledger with another pre season under his belt would be very handy. I do realise that Jones, Maister and Gwilt are almost certain to play, I don't believe they should be.
Updated team
B: Simpkin, Delaney, Dempster
HB: Webster, Fisher, Roberton
C: Wright, Geary, Curren
HF: Savage, Riewoldt, Minchington
F: Schneider, Lee, Longer
Foll: Hickey, Armitage, Dunstan
Int: Newnes, Ray, Ross
Sub: Saunders
Emg: Stanley, Bruce, Templeton
Hopefully the three emergencies, Siposs and Markworth can force their way into the team soon enough.

Re: Pick your 22 for Round 1 vs Melbourne
A lot of post's have included Templeton, I believe both him & Weller are rookies & as such can't play until elevated to the senior list. One rookie can be elevated mid season the second only for a long term injury.

That's what I'm getting at. Otherwise you make a mockery of the selection processs, which should reflect ability and form.plugger66 wrote:Just dont gift games to anyone though.

What are the rules on this? I think there is some kind of AFL/Players Association rule?dragit wrote:I wouldn't right everyone off who plays at sandy this week. Ross may get a game next week if he plays well this week.
I don't think you can play next week if you have played 4 praccy matches already?
