Jones
Really hope he is mainly a backup this year.
13 touches at 53%, 4 clangers, 3 frees against, 2 tackles...
Did he shut someone down?
I know it's a practice match but... Very underwhelming figures for a 30 year old midfielder.

How did that compare to our gun midfielders?dragit wrote:Really hope he is mainly a backup this year.

He may well have done some good things, but the dogs midfield were pretty prolific, did he shut someone down?
Midfielders on the wrong side of 30 are just wasting valuable experience time if they are not going well themselves. If we end up with only a few wins this year, I'd rather see Weller & Templeton with 10 games each rather than 20 more from Jones. Clint may well still have a good year, but if he isn't I hope we try other guys.

Re: Jones
Jones has to be backup in case we are hit hard by injuries or the u/23 mids are totally worn out. We gain absolutely nothing by playing Jones ahead of Curren, Wright, Ross, Dunstan, Newnes, Saunders, Weller and Templeton.

Get weller in if we want a stopper.
He can't possibly be worse and at least has some potential upside.

Re: Jones
Surely these things have to go on form. If there is a kid who is tearing it up and can do it better then he is in. If not, then I still see a role for Jones. The aim is to win games, even in a developing team, as the coach is on record as saying
Re: Jones
Guess what fellas. Jones has been rated top three during the preseason cut him some bloody slack. Yes I know that he can't kick coz us as supporters give him a flogging. If cj Is a constant in our team I for one won't be disappointed.

Nothing to do with form, it's entirely got to do with how many people on this site don't like him. Same as every other playerbigcarl wrote:Surely these things have to go on form.

Re: Jones
He is a seasoned campaigner who will do some grunt work, we can't leave it all up to the kids at this point with little experience around them,it's a long season. Let's not make the mistakes of Melbourne, we want to be at least competitive in this rebuild. These veteran fringe players can still do a job for a good half of the season.

Everything to do with form, I am discussing his game with stats and asking if people think it warrants a game ahead of other younger fringe players…remboy wrote:Nothing to do with form, it's entirely got to do with how many people on this site don't like him. Was his form good last night? He ranked our 18th in pure numbers… pretty low for a mid.

I was surprised to read he had four clangers - and having actually watched the game could only remember "one" where a clearing handball went towards a dogs player, but his second effort pressure made sure they didnt clear the ball
I CAN remember he contributed to several goals
No one, repeat no one, on our list works harder - his trouble is comparisons to NDS/Montagna when they get the ball out wide and nail a pass

I'm not sure what you are saying here?sunsaint wrote:his trouble is comparisons to NDS/Montagna when they get the ball out wide and nail a pass
"Working hard" isn't enough IMO, a 30 YO mid needs to be a gun in a re-building side… We have plenty of players to teach the young guys "hard work" Montagna, Hayes, Geary, Riewoldt - even Steven & Armo.
Dunstan, Ross, Curren, Saunders, Savage, Newnes need all the experience they can get while Lenny & Joey are still running around.

I'm pretty sure the capt and coach have both mentioned it during interviews. That dosnt mean anything thomaverick wrote:Really?luc1966 wrote:Guess what fellas. Re: Jones
How many 'teachers' do people really think we need or is optimal ?
Some on here seem to want 18 'teachers' with 4 apprentices.
With teacher student ratios like that we will be the envy of the western world!
Naplan tests look out ! Cop that Sth Korea!
We need to get our 10 most promising youngsters up to the 50 game mark.
People will say 'oh the kids shouldn't be gifted games' but its the same for any young person in the workplace.
A catch 22 - you can't get a job if you don't have experience and you can't get experience if you don't have a job.
I believe in giving youth opportunities and if they aren't up to it well churn them over and find people that are.
Kids can't improve if they aren't playing at the top level but I expect them to be playing well at vfl level first.

wtf is wrong with people - we are in a thread on jones.Middo wrote:

I meant mistake RELATIVE to pick 3! not in absolute terms.
he will still probably play 200 games and a be good player.
btu can people stick to a topic inside a topic thread.
if you want to have a go at me that's fine - start a thread on billings.
but if everyone is discussing jones in a thread called 'jones' why sidetrack it.
