Finally happening but only for one round unfortunately.
With all the new players it would be handy!

Re: Player names on jumpers
Good for the tv audience but a big dumb four eyed lamo like me is hardly going to be able to read a player's name from more than 50 metre's away .

Re: Player names on jumpers
This is to cater for Pies "supporters" who buy a 3 game membership and watch most games on the box anyway. They "support" the Pies from the pub only when the filth is way in front, and the names on the jumpers are for them.
They can drunkenly slur the players' names, to pretend they are knowledgeable.

Re: Player names on jumpers
Just another irritating step in dumbing the game down.
Is there going to be nothing left that you're not going to be TOLD? -- the 1/4 by 1/4 time scores by some nit on the PA; "!*!GOAL!!*!*" on the big screen when there's goal -- etc
Learning to recognise players by their numbers is part of learning how to watch the game. It's something you discover, and develop and become good at, as you learn how to read the game.
We're in a sad era of instant gratification -- where instant gratification is taken for granted as a need, where instant knowledge is the assumed norm.
Player names on jumpers? -- just more clutter in the service of the no-effort theatre-goer.

Better than pur supporters who neither go to games nor buy memberships sadly.WellardSaint wrote:This is to cater for Pies "supporters" who buy a 3 game membership and watch most games on the box anyway. Re: Player names on jumpers
I wouldn't have thought the players needed their names on the jumpers? You would think they could tell which is their jumper by the number on the back..........

Re: Player names on jumpers
It is another step in winning over the non AFL states and assist the uneducated begin to warm to the game. The A League do it, NRL during State of Origin games I think it is a great marketing ploy and hope it comes in permanently. People need to consider the game is now played in most states and is battling to get a foot hold in the league states!

Re: Player names on jumpers
what a load of dumbed down americana rubbish. are the players gonna run on the ground one at a time with an intro now?
if you're at the game you won't be able to read the names from a distance and if you're watching TV the commentators will tell you the names (correctly about 99% of the time)
don't get it...

Well you dont understand marketing then because they will sell so many more jumpers now if they sell ones with the names on them.

Re: Player names on jumpers
I reckon an even better marketing idea would be to sell that space where they are proposing to put the names as advertising space.plugger66 wrote:spiral3 wrote:what a load of dumbed down americana rubbish. are the players gonna run on the ground one at a time with an intro now?

Re: Player names on jumpers
Why not a combo? All the players could change there names to Whiskas.Cairnsman wrote:I reckon an even better marketing idea would be to sell that space where they are proposing to put the names as advertising space.plugger66 wrote:spiral3 wrote:what a load of dumbed down americana rubbish. are the players gonna run on the ground one at a time with an intro now?

It'd be easy to tell them apart by the numbers on their back.

Yep they do but number 7 last year and the year before was number 7. Not sure people bought 2 of them but Hayes is a different jumper.

Re: Player names on jumpers
it takes a while for a new number 7 to establish themselves and who's to say your new favourite player wears no 7, could be 25plugger66 wrote:Yep they do but number 7 last year and the year before was number 7. Not sure people bought 2 of them but Hayes is a different jumper.
the good players stay in their numbers for 5-ish years, so it's not a high turn over, the only change to that would be rampant free agency
I would think alternate strips would encourage more multiple sales (they don't have to be actually worn in the season, e.g. reissue the candy stripe, just good design)
