Opinions are ok its just uninformed opinions that are very strange. Maybe time for ignore if you knowledge of footy is like that. But then again laughing is good for your health.

He was a superstar....no doubt about it. Size, skills and they talk these days about a tank. How he used to get around the ground....just bounded around the place.whiskers3614 wrote:looks like lots of us had forgotten Carl!Verdun66 wrote:1. Plugger

Cannot find one person who left him out who saw him play. Its seems footy isnt the only issue. We are rating a top 5 and it seems you are rating him because he left. turncoat seems a give away. The problem with that is you have Stewart at number one. Weird.

5. Riewoldt
I didn't see Stewart or Baldock, but I trust people who did and anecdotally they need to go top three. Stewart above Doc, but apparently both had to be seen to be believed.
I did see Plugger in full flight and I know he is number one because there has never been anyone better.
After that it's all debatable, but I've gone for Harvs and Riewoldt because of their excellence over a long period.
Barker, Loewe, Winmar, Lenny, Cowboy, Ditterich among the unlucky ones.
Note that I've rated them on pure football ability ... character issues and so on didn't come into it.
2. Stewart
3. Baldock
4. Harvey

No one else played at the level Harvey did for 300 games.... Let alone 350+
He influenced more games than any other saint... Played more finals... And in 97-98 was so dominant teams just accepted it
An 8 time All Australian.... Mind blowing

Re: my alltime top 5
The Doc, then daylight. Played just over 100 games for us as a 5ft 10' CHF. All Aust Capt once, VC once, when they played Carnivals once every 4 odd years and only then had an AA side.
Holmesby wrote an early book where he named the Top 100. From memory had Doc 3, behind Stewie and Plugger. I had the argument with Russ, and he admitted he never had an answer to the question "How would Doc have gone if he'd played in the middle, and could Stewie have played at CHF anywhere near as well (they were around the same size).
Doc was the AFL king pin. When he went on WoS, everyone basically bowed in his presence. A wonderful footballer, a glorious man and the best leader a football club could want. Smart, sharp and truly respected.
He did some truly extraordinary things on field. None more so than his ability to play hurt (e.g. '66 finals series).
He stands alone in my mind. But, each to their own, of course.

Plugger
Harvey
Roo
Lenny
Barker
As others have said, plugger was simply the best, his aggression and suspensions mask how truly special his talent was, best I've ever seen.
Harvey just ahead of roo, very similar in that either rarely play a bad game and have done it for so long. His 97/98 seasons and his game in the 05 qf will always sit with me. Still miss him.
Roo playing the toughest position in the ground for so long getting 2 and 3 opponents regularly, and a game plan for his peak years that didn't really suit, what a champion. If he held the cup aloft may be number 1, without his hammy injury who knows, because that injury certainly has hurt his kicking for mine. True champ on and off the ground, so much like Harvey for the club, just not as long for mine...favourite of every coach, says something...
Hayes has been so good for so long, who can forget his first half in the 09 gf or his game in 2010 gf1, to be able to play his best footy on the biggest days, is legendary.
Barks just ahead of Nicky. Barks carried the side for a long time, on and off the field, and was my hero growing up, in a better team he would have been a superstar in the league not just for the saints.
Nicky, burkey, stewie, unlucky

Missed the first six rounds in 91, then kicked 12, 10 and 12 in his first three games back after injury.maverick wrote:As others have said, plugger was simply the best, his aggression and suspensions mask how truly special his talent was, best I've ever seen.
"Lockett's best season at St Kilda was in 1991, when he kicked 127 goals in 17 games, at an average of 7.47 goals per game, the highest average ever achieved in VFL/AFL history. "
