St Kilda's on field results can only benefit from his departure.

Interestingly the article notes that he is "proud of the culture of umpiring and how respect had improved with the league's zero tolerance toward umpire abuse" and lists that his achievements "included the introduction of the laws of the game DVD and the player-to-umpire pathway program".

Nowhere in the article does it say that he actually improved the performance of the umpires in games.

Surprised he lasted as long as he did in the role.

Do you seriously believe that somehow Jeff Gieschen personally instructed the umpires to be biased against St Kilda?

I dont as that would mean the umpires actually learnt something from him.

Now that he has much more time on his hands Gieschen will be able to read the rules of the game.

Come on down GT.
A ZERO tolerance toward umpire abuse and ridding the phrase "white maggot" from the Australian sporting vernacular are just two of the proud achievements of AFL umpire boss Jeff Gieschen who departs the job today after 14 years.
LOL

Now they're green and yellow maggots... what an epitaph.

Good riddance.

I totally disagree re the 'white maggot' thing... that term is party of footy folklore (like skunk supporters' dental issues)... everyone knows that white is the only colour for a maggot.

That said, fourteen long and exhaustive years... clearly time for a well earned rest, and maybe now there will be more time to pursue your other interests Pluggs(?) :)

Have watched allot of old games recently .

So many poor decisions !
I don't think that's a great legacy .

When you watch a game live your emotions can get the better of you and you only see things with one eye .
If you then see a replay you tend to find the ump was right .
Watching games from months or years ago makes poor decisions stand out like you know what .
and i've seen so many you know whats lately , i oughta be a vet !

Watch games from years ago when there were no packs around the ball and there were even worse decisions. There are many reasons we think they make more mistekes now than they did previously but the 2 main reasons are they replay mistales often and also because there is now so many player around the bsll that if you follow one side you can maybe see a free for them and if you follow the other side you can maybe see a free for that side. It is so much harder to umpire now than ever before because of the tackling and the packs around the ball.

We only think they make more mistakes now because they do.
They should be improving but they're not.
Every aspect of the game (aside from set shots) is improving despite players running more. We've gone from one umpire to three in my time watching footy so, they have less ground to cover yet they still make errors. They miss a lot due to poor positioning but also just not paying blatant frees and paying ones where the player has clearly staged.
Too easily sucked in.

Yes they do make mistakes but no more than previously even though the game is so much harder to umpire so the umpiring has improved. Watch old games and have a laugh at how bad the decisions were with no packs.

Yes, there are a lot of mistakes and yes there are too many around the ball it can resemble a rugby union scrum depending on how far the umpire lets it go but the biggest difference from watching a few games from years gone by is that the rules and the interpretation were clear as we did'nt have as many. Its interesting that my son watched some of the old games and was impressed with the clarity in which the umpire called the free. Now there is no disposing of the ball correctly either by hand or foot, if you're tackled you just let go of it and wait for an umpire to blow the whistle. It won't matter who or how umpiring is managed we will still be sitting there calling BALL, HOW FAR or GEEZ why don't you kick it for him.The game has changed but we as supporters never will and why, BECAUSE WE LOVE OUR TEAM.

Will return to Tigerland as head coach in 2015 after they are in poll position for a top four finish, but end up losing their last half a dozen games and finish ninth

Not sure if I am imagining this, but didn't the AFL promise to limit or be aware of blatant staging?
Umps still get sucked in by the Selwoods of this world, ducking their heads,
and players diving when feeling the slightest contact.
Staging still goes on.
Except when Milne got manhandled, threw his arms up, then the umps called "play on"
so they have enforced the "non-staging" in our case at least.
Just IMHO

The clever 'goldilocks' from the Eagles crucified us in 2013. Priddis is one of the littlesmartarses who knows how to suck in the umps and he's gifted plenty of frees at crucial times with his diving tactics. Soon as he's tackled, he face plants

Umps getting sucked in....It's been going on for ages. The players that can pluck a free in a crucial period in a game are a valuable commodity and we need to teach our players to be better thinkers. When things are tight and everyone including the umps are on edge it's those frees can be the difference between winning and losing.

There's much harder marking on umpires nowadays due to the availability of slo-mo replays that are played over and over from different angles. Umps have one chance to see something in real time. Armchair experts can authoritatively make their judgements and confirm they know more than the umps after watching an incident in slow motion five times from three different angles. The rules and their interpretation are also changing so rapidly.
And then there are people like Curly for example, who just bag the umpire no matter what. It's a culture of umpire abuse that has a life of its own regardless of the actual quality of the umpiring. Numerous posters on here are subscribers.

He is the godfather to at least 12 kids of Saints players, the Board has him on speed dial,
they ran Richo's contract past this bloke before offering it to Richo...

Are you over 5 years of age because that post certainly makes you sound about 4 years of age. What is your job again? I really wonder about people who tell lies about their employment to make themselves important. You are one of them. In charge of one of the big banks. now that is hilarious.
