Hall of Shame Members
These people should never be let anywhere near a selection panel again...ifwhat we've been told re Cuddles is true.
The selection panel will consist of:
- CEO, Michael Nettlefold;
- Head of Football, Chris Pelchen;
- Director and past-player, Nathan Burke; and
- NSW Institute of Sport Manager Coaching, Athlete and Program Services, Clare Prideaux.
The selection panel will be assisted by a specialist advisory group consisting of:
- Former AFL player, Brad Johnson will advise on football matters;
- Director and Managing Director of Coles, Ian McLeod who will advise on commercial matters; and
- Bluestone Edge Director, Pippa Grange who will advise on people, culture and leadership matters.
The St Kilda Football Club is firmly focused on the future and is determined to put in place the best structure to maximize performance in the modern competition.

Re: Hall of Shame Members
Dave, they wouldn't be the first selection panel to have made a mistake.
Let's see..
Tony Shaw.. Collingwood.
John Devine.. Geelong
Mark Neeld.. Melb
Terry Wallace.. Richmond
Michael Voss.. Lions
There are plenty in history. So they made a blue on Watters. We chose well with Lyon.
So success is not a given.
This time it turned pear shaped and at least the club had the fortitude to call it. I'm pleased we can cut the problem and start fresh.

Re: Hall of Shame Members
Byron and Howlin', you are missing the point. Nothing to do with hindsight.
We have been told/leaked to just how terribly incompetent Cuddles is, as justification for sacking him three hours after all was honky dory on (radio) SEN...even though El Prez and El Netters then denied that he was any of these things (go figure. ).
So if all these carefully (it seems) leaks are actually on the mark... then no, I can't accept how such a supposedly HR-savvy group could get it just sooooooo wrong. (Hint... HR-savvvy may have something to do with it.)
So many red flags. No not red flags..., 'Blaze' Johnson after partying with Flint Jones style flaming red flags! And they didn't spot a single one of them...?
They didn't just miss the barn door. They didn't just miss the whole barn. They were standing inside the barn and still couldn't hit it!
Other posters have suggested that we should just abandon the committee thing and toss a coin. 50/50 odds that way. Based on the (alleged) Cuddles balls up that'd be a huge increase in the odds our way.
Unless...
Summers and Netters weren't lying when they denied the allegations against Cuddles...

Re: Hall of Shame Members
Everyone needs to admit that Scott Watters was pretty impressive when he first arrived. I remember most people on this forum espousing their support for the man. No one knew he would implode like he did. Everything is clear with hindsight, in my opinion.
We should be thankful that the club had the balls to realise their mistake and make the tough decision.

Oh Gawd. What's wrong with you? You're usually reasonably balanced about most topics.....except perhaps a certain religious institution. But what's with the conspiracy crap? Watters turned out to be a twat. Go figure. He coached two WAFL premierships and the people who hired him aren't professional greenhorns. So they got it wrong. Build a bridge.....

Re: Hall of Shame Members
As someone who has had a say in employing a great number of people over the last 30plus years I can tell you:
Some people are absolute guns at resumes and interviews, overstating their abilities and air-brushing their weaknesses!
If all the stuff coming out about Watters is true he may have been one of those people, can't really blame selection panel for that!
Now Lovett situation where the warts were already exposed is a different kettle of fish altogether.

Let's assume Choco and Pelch were BFF's in 2011 as they are now.
Let's assume Pelch was hard to get along with and work with (Lyon hated Pelch remember) back in 2011.
Basic maths would have said Choco was a good fit then, except that past coaches weren't trendy back then as an option

Re: Hall of Shame Members
So in your high and mighty and super intelligence would you have on the selection committee?
Remember all those learned people who persuaded us to move heaven and earth to get Malcolm Blight.
That worked out real well didn't it.
One might even conclude getting Ross Lyon was a mistake, after all, his main opposition was John Longmire, Longmire's won a premiership, Ross has lost 4 Grand Finals.

I thought appointing Watters was not the best move at the time- I wanted to see a more experienced coach all along after Lyon grabbed the cash and ran.

Re: Hall of Shame Members
Its laughable that the panel will probably consist of a broad range of people that specialise in different areas when according to the current club structures all you are being asked to do is coach the players and answer to the head of football department.

Yeah, good way of looking at it, have to feel sorry for anyone applying for the job. Will they have to tick all the boxes, measure up to KPI'S and all the other business jargon when all supporters want is a competitive team playing good football. They have to remember that they are running the place on the members behalf.saintspremiers wrote:No it's not.oldie60 wrote:Its laughable that the panel will probably consist of a broad range of people that specialise in different areas when according to the current club structures all you are being asked to do is coach the players and answer to the head of football department.

I wouldn't be hanging my hat on THAT interview if I were you. The FACTS are that it was an unauthorised interview, in fact the club refused SEN the interview and told Watters NOT to do it.
I would like you to also consider that there may have been a "confidentiality clause" as part of Watters' settlement. Admittedly, the Prez didn't handle the presser all that well, he'll learn from it.
When Watters was appointed it must have been clear that he had shortcomings but the panel must have seen an upside and predicted that he would grow into the job. It now appears all too obvious that things didn't go to plan and in fact went the other way, culminating in Watters being sacked on Friday. We move on !!
NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

Re: Hall of Shame Members
Good summation there Eastern! (have an emoticon! ) You know folks, hindsight is a wonderful science is it not? We ALL knew why we didn't win the 2009 flag, and we all knew why at the time, did we not? ( ) Personally I was WAY too involved in the emotion to see the tactical rasons why we lost..but NOW? Clearly it was down to Luke Ball not getting enough time on the paddock.
Why do I cite all this? Because, like most people, the coaching selection panel are human and it was (with hindsight) human error to appoint Scott Watters to the position of senior coach. At the time, the "trend" was to get a coach who had been an assistant to Malthouse, remember the rush to get Neeld? I was most impressed with what I heard from SW at his initial press conference. I was also impressed with the way in which we became more of an attacking side in his first season. I don't blame the selection panel at all. At the time SW seemed like a perfect fit...........with hindsight ??????

Re: Hall of Shame Members
While the op is over the top, the club failed twice. The club let a great coach slip through its fingers and then the new coach who they picked turned out to be a muppet.
Saying hindsight is a wonderful thing blah blah is just excusing poor performance.
Football clubs are basically a closed shop and have zero transparency and accountability.
It's up to members to put the heat on the club and demand better performance.
Don't excuse it.
