Tom Harley motivational speech

Post: # 1408634Post howlinwolf »

The company I work for is going through some big changes and part of the resilience training they've been employing was getting Tom Harley to speak to us about what it takes to be successful.

Of course most of the 90 min I tried to relate his GFC experiences to how it could help our club. :)
Some of the interesting related things he said were..

Frank Costa approached him and said they wanted him to be Captain. He asked why they would choose a player of so limited ability ?
Frank told him that he was the person of character that stood up when things weren't good in 2006. He didn't need to be THE best player but the best of character as the others will follow this lead.

Also said the No.1 priority for Stephen Wells choosing players was "character". (probably easier done when drafts are so strong and father sons abundant)
Emphasized traits of loyalty, respect + trust. Especially trust. That players can rely on other players to do what they are expected and nothing less. The only way to win the ultimate is to be able to trust your fellow players.

In fact he stressed it need to go all the way to the top of the club, coach, president and CEO. Said Brian Cook is still a mentor to him in life.

Also said their leadership group had a blend of personality types. Said Scarlett was a great help but was completely different person to him. He knew he needed him onside though. If you weren't within his close circle you would never make it.
Mooney was in the leadership group and was a lad, loved a beer and even a smoke and was the man to speak to any younger player that was a bit off the rails.

It all sounds so obvious but had me thinking about our future captains and leadership groups. These positions need to be chosen carefully as they set the scene for the whole group.
Roo has been a great captain and Lenny a good choice for leadership group but the next generation is going to have to take the baton.

Maybe Geary does fit the Harley mold ?

I think Peter Summers sounds good so far. Hopefully we can land a good CEO and get the club cohesive.

Question time came and I was oh so tempted to ask him "what Brian Cook was doing in the next 4 years ? " :-)

I worked for one of Frank Costa's organisations and part of the methods of employing people was using a people first philosiphy where by you select people with great character and personal qualiites. These people then continue the process by applying their own standards and found that people tended to follow. In principal its basically set or lead by example and you'll soon separate the doers from the its all too hard types. I don't know but some of these things are already in place at some if not most clubs. ie Leading Teams.

Why are those blokes arseholes. A couple of mistkes doesnt make a person an arsehole. Hate to have friends like you unless of course you can look in the mirror and say im perfect and so is everyone in the club I follow.

I think it's pretty fanciful to suggest that it was Geelong's supposed policy of 'character first' in picking players that had any major relevance to their success. Ditto the character of their then coach. The relevant factor was/is their solidity off-field. The Cook/Costa/Balme triumvirate was what formed that core. Our equivalent at the time was Butterss/Thomas. Not much of a comparison, is it?

Just shows the bleeding obvious- good leadership generally gets results and Costa is a pretty driven individual. I hope Mr Summers leads strongly and gets the right mix of people at our club.

You do realize he was just giving your company a motivational speech right? His talk about Geelong were just metaphors (if that's the right word) to get you guys working together. Mentioning Scarlett was obviously intended to indicated that some dick head in your company has to also get behind the leaders. Every one has to be on the same page including your bosses or you, etc.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

That is well known re Fish Lips and that player.

He cut his lunch, then de-listed him at the end of the season.

Good work!
