What the Saints need is for more than one club to want him.
More than one club does - North and St.Kilda
If that was really true, North would not even be in the picture as we would have activated our contract extension.
The Saints only want him , if we cannot reasonable amount in return for him.
Saints wanted him enough to contact him to 2014.
Saints want him unless they get an acceptable offer
Norths non offer of FA is unacceptable for NDS
If push comes to shove we hold the whip hand.
we keep NDS we take Delaney in PSD.

I still dont understand the premise of most posts on this thread.
North have pick 26 and Delany. That is all they have. They want Dal as a FA and will give us Delany cheap if that happens. That is betetr for both sides IF we get decent FA compo for Dal...
One factor for decent FA compo is length/size of contract (this is the only part of the equation that can be enhanced at this stage). So, the only thing that Saints and north are negotiating is the length and size of Dal's contract. St. kilda and Dal's interests are thus aligned in these negotiations. Maybe they offered him 3 years, and we (and Dal) want 4 years...
Band 3 compo is still better than pick 26. Paying Dal an extra year would seem a better prospect for North than departing with pick 26; if I were them, paying a little more to Dal is worth it as pick 26 is (potentially) worth quite a bit.
The talk about North increasing any trade offer, when they dont have anything more to trade, seems just a smoke screen for the real negotiations that must be occurring over the Dal Santo contract
Well it is obvious #22 for FA or pick 26 and Delaney aren't sufficient.
Especially when we can pick up Delaney in the PSD or under FA.
North have an option if they really want NDS.
They can trade outa player for a first round dp or they can piss off.
Really Saints hold the whip hand. We will keep NDS pick up Delaney in the PSD and North can see how their pick #26 helps them into the top 8 or top four.

I hope this is what eventuates.
Public perception was that we were a soft touch in last years trade period with our use of picks 12 & 13. Quite a few media pundits also thought we lost on the McEvoy trade (Caro bagged us out on Adelaide radio). Keeping Dal and getting Delaney in the PSD will send a message that we aren't such a push over after all.

It is a traders perception/mantra.
If the setup is not favourable, don't touch it and move on, hold your cash and do something else.

Massive chance he could leave as a free agent now!
The only positive to come from this would be that both Bombers and Roos would need to fight to get him to accept their offers. Means price and contract length could go up which would possibly mean the compo going up as well....

It's in both club's interests to shove the price up - because they won't have to give up any sort of compensation to the Saints to obtain him. Financial offer to Dal is the only way each club can win - so come on Kangaroos, up your goddamn offer already!!

Surely North would have offered that much also 530k per year doesnt seem that sgnificant alongside others?
I don't know if North offered 3 years. That could be the thing, if North now come out & offer, say, $1.8 over 3, who knows?
Could be band 1, but definitely band 2.

Copy now i understand it would be great if it forces them to match it ?

It is even more obvious that North would not trade any player who is worth a 1st rounder in order to get Dal. what would be the point? So your analysis of the situation is not realistic... if that is the only avenue for Dal to North then the 2 clubs would have said forget it right from the start. The fact that the negotiaions continue must mean it is about contract length...
We are probably hoping to push him to band 2... id say we would probably be satisfied with end of 1st rounder, i.e. pick around 20 + the guarantee of Delany for nix... Of course pushing it to a band 1 would be the ultimate but i cant see it happening as age comes into the equation somewhere
So has anyone confirmed that this is not an option? Swapping our first round pick #17 for Norths #8 has got to be a great option. North still get their father son pick and we get two picks in the top 10! Maybe even get Norths 2nd round pick too.

definitely not an option. north using #8 on Mcdonald. This is confirmed

Dal is gone but NOT to North....Pick 26 was never going to get it done....
Brace yourself folks!
I hope I'm wrong with this one Con!
I have a mate who lives in Melbourne (I'm in SA) who has some pretty good contacts & he's right about 80 - 90% of the time.
I'm hoping this is one of the 10 - 20%!
The reason I want him to be wrong this time is I don't think the pick we will get is good enough for DAL! He's more value too our kids than a pick in the 20's!

They can't do that. West Coast offered 6 so North have to use 8.
That's why they do the father-son bidding before the trade period because the picks they use are untradeable.
