I actually like Lyon, I think he is a great man manager and he has left an indelible mark on the games history I wonder if he would be better suited to an assistant role as a defensive specialist or something like that...maybe if it all turns pear shape at Freo he could come back to our club in that type of role...
Yep top 3 coach in the AFL suited to an assistant role but SW is a very good coach already. You really come up with some good stuff. The funny thing is on here the RL hates may actually think you are right. It just proves they watch games with one or maybe both eyes closed.
Mark Thomson is arguably in the top 2 coaches and he's an assistant...Lyon is arguably not in the top 3 coaches because he doesn't have what it takes to win a GF and I'm hoping that SW has what it takes to get a team to win a GF. Crazy dream huh!

mark Thompson isnt in the top 18 coaches because he is an assistant. At the start of next year he will end up in the top 3 when he coaches Essendon. RL is clearly in the top 3. have your fantasy he isnt. I hope SW has what it takes also but im with you its a crazy dream.
2 flags and a runners-up is probably about a par score for the squads Clarkson has had over that time
had he not won yesterday I think he would have been seen as an under achiever
Neither he nor Lyon is in any danger of surpassing Leigh Matthews any time soon!
Thanks but it's not rocket science...I just pick up a few things from here and there but mostly from just watching TV.
What channel?
And the original question - where is the longmire thread from about this time last year?
Which channel is that Top Model show on...I get a couple of pointers from that...but I can't remember seeing a Longmire thread specifically but now that you mention him I'd say that Longmire is arguable a better coach than Ross Lyon.
P66, what did TheOtherThommo say about you?
"Round and round you go...clutching at straws...flatulent prognostications..."
You're a muppet.

Where was this thread this time last year?
Such the expert that you are.
Clarko outcoached Lyon yesterday but aslo this year Clarko had the luxury of planning to be in peak form in September.
Clarko is on record that last year they didn't peak in September. Early in h&a 2012 Hawthorn struggled. Last year he said that generally the team had run out of puff just trying to make top 4. This year he was on record that he would take advantage of their fortunate position by deliberately managing his players to peak in September
I think that Lyon will be making some significant tweaks to his game plan that will finally see him play a more attacking brand. If he's smart, three (four) GF losses will have taught him that he needs to change something up.
Kosi said on radio last week that Lyon was such a good footy thinker and teacher that if he wanted to play the exact opposite game plan he'd also be brilliant at doing that.
I really don't think he's a one trick pony. But time will tell.

Matthews is hard to rate because he had a killer squad to choose from and a larger salary cap. It will be interesting to see the GWS and GC teams in premiership mode and be easier to judge their coaches against Matthews.
Lyon could go either way as he is currently on paper a very successful coach premierships or not. Getting to a GF is extremely hard let alone winning one. If freo lost Fyfe and mundy to ACLs next year it would almost write them off. Pav and Sandy retire at the end of the year and Lyon's stocks could drop off very quickly. He wins one though and the footy world would have to acknowledge him as a coaching genius.
Footy is a pretty brutal environment and no one likes a loser.
Cairnsman wrote:Lyon stuffed up when he made a comment about straight kicking in his presser on Friday after the GF parade.
Fyfe's first, second and third (every) shot for goal would have buried straight into the head of every Freo player with laser precision and planted a seed that will grow into the biggest bean stalk for the rest of the clubs life...bigger than a toe poke and erratic bounce of a ball.
It wasn't his only stuff up but IMO it was his first...good coach but arguably doesn't have what it takes to get through the last week in September.
I don't think it's arguable at all anymore.
Scores of 60 odd 4 times in a row, and clutching at excuses each time.
If you can't kick a score in finals, you don't win Grand Finals. Simple.

Good one. What do you do for a job again? Did you parents get a return on your school fees?

Yep! and that is probably why the question will be asked over and over again for the next 12 months...assuming Freo make the GF next year...it will be interesting though...especially if they don't make it. I still reckon he might be better at being a specialist assistant coach.

Stop making those people who understand footy laugh. My sides are splitting.

Blight lost 3 GF's with them, then went on to win back to back.
Lyon is under no pressure whatsoever, regardless if what pathetic & bitter saints fans think of him.
Who's bitter?...maybe a few but all I see is punters having a very informed debate. BTW RL has got a long, long way to go before he is in the same league as Blight.

Blighty didn't blame his players and look for excuses when he lost games. Blighty didn't lie to his players and do deals in the middle of a finals campaign.

Funny that the coach so called blamed the players but most if not all loved him as a coach. Now that is really weird.

I want you to help me be dumbed down to your level. You are the perfect person for that and when I reach your level I may be able to understand what the hell you are on about because at the moment it is far to dumbed down for me to get.
I'm not getting it into the genius not genius thing but one thing we can say for sure is clarkson built this list from nothing
Rls intense approach means he only has 3 years to get his job done so he needs an almost ready to go list.
I don't really think yesterday came to down to coaching .
If balantyne wore the right boot stops they still could have won.
But good kicking = good footy.

No. You are just plain dumb and that's why you don't understand, but I'm a generous bloke and I know you can't help being who you are, so here goes...I'll keep it simple for you.

'Loved him as a coach' but did they love him as a person? They respected him and thought highly of him because he worked damned hard and he helped them get into GF's in consecutive years, but you said it yourself right there. I'm not sure that 'most' would consider him a lifelong friend. Maybe a couple of guys might but I doubt it.

Dont know about that. What i do know is RL went to Rooys wedding a year after he left and SW didnt. GT went as well. Maybe Rooy is one of a couple of guys. By the way what you said is just your opinion. It has 100% no fact in it at all. What I wrote is 100% fact. It isnt my opinion.
You probably dont get footy these days but GT was also very popular and im sure not many players would be life long friends with him either. That is footy now. By the way that is my opinion just like you gave me. There is no fact at all just like you gave me.
As you said you kept it simple. it was simply nothing but an opinion that means jack.
By the way as you accused me a spreading rubbish when are you going to tell us the names of the senior players you accused of some things. We wouldnt want you to be speading rubbish to put the club into disarray would.
