Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
No idea who we get at 19 but I can speculate. It'll be as usual. We'll have a ranking system in place and cross off those who go before pick 19 then choose the highest player avail on our ranking ladder. I think there's a fair chance we pick someone we rate higher than others and go away happy with our selections. That'll be what we say anyway.
Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
I believe, because of penalties to both Adelaide and Essendon, that St.Kilda currently has picks 3,19,35,53,71,89. Can anyone verify this?
Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
Not sure if the picks are correct, but they'll be thereabouts.
It would be good if we could trade 35 + player for a second rounder, and 53 + player for a third rounder.
I'm not interested in 71 or 89 except to upgrade Curren.

Leaving us 3 and 20 and 36.
(There is still a small chance Melbourne will be given a extra pick in the 20s pushing us to 21 and 37.)

Both Adelaide & Essendon are banned from 1st two rounds, also, both GWS & Gold Coast have activated compensation picks.Con Gorozidis wrote:I think GWS get 1 and 11 and 19.civilwar1 wrote:I believe, because of penalties to both Adelaide and Essendon, that St.Kilda currently has picks 3,19,35,53,71,89. GWS' compo pick was from Adelaide so that will be pick 9 ( as Adelaide would have had 8), Gold Coast's pick is from Geelong but is end of first round, so will be 18 now that Essendon are banned.
ATM we have 3, 21, 37, 55 & so on.
GWS have 1, 9, 19, 35 & so on.
If Melbourne get a priority pick, I think it will be 19.

Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
I got the impression somehow that Kelly has the ability to work very hard and l could understand the club's impression of him being fairly impressed. Don't know enough reg: skills or comparisons with Aish etc. Anyway past St. Kilda workhorses reminded me of Banger and Burke. A player in that mould would be much appreciated.
If Melb pick Kelly at nb 2 i suppose we will be expected to automatically call Aish as opposed to Schub'berg.
Just hope our first pick this year is the real deal!

I think we can assume that Thomas & Franklin will add 2 more compo picks at the end of the first round too.Con Gorozidis wrote:Oh - I forgot GC get a compo pick.
So yes 3, 21, 37.
Thanks sax.
Maybe Betts too?
Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
Yes this. Please please don't let our pick be this year's Tambling. Hell I don't even want him to turn out like Xavier Ellis or Bryce Gibbs or Chris Masten. We need a dead set gun.Megamaguire wrote:I got the impression somehow that Kelly has the ability to work very hard and l could understand the club's impression of him being fairly impressed. Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
i thought Boyd aish scharenberg were the consensus top 3?? then there was a gap and then kelly and billings then day light then anyone between 6-25 who were all closely rated.
if thats true, then i hope the club just stick with the next best principal. Its the safest option and we right now are not in a position to gamble.

Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
I believe whoever we draft we get plenty of opportunity earlier on (due to our ladder position) so if it's someone that needs to build a tank like Billings maybe it wouldn't be bad option?

Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
I hope we don't fall into the trap of recruiting these small to mid size forwards who have a good outside game in the under 18 competition. Kelly, Billings etc is not what we need. Other than Boyd there are no talls worth a top 15 pick so we do need to be patient. Better off with a good mid that a poor tall.
Aish or Sheed more likely. Sheed or the bull Freeman is who I would pick. Some club is going to get a bargain with Freeman. He will be a gun - a quicker Wines.

Some of the draft predictors have Sheed going second round.Jimmy O'Dea wrote:I hope we don't fall into the trap of recruiting these small to mid size forwards who have a good outside game in the under 18 competition. Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
Well I'm assuming the club has been seriously looking, reviewing and looking again at Kelly; Aish and beyond.
I still cant help remembering St. Kilda choosing Ball and leaving Judd for West Coast. I understand the issue of Judd's shoulder reconstructions in the decision - making process but can appreciate the safety first approach in going for Ball. Of coarse i'm assuming they hadn't placed a perfectly fit Judd with no injury queries above Ball but maybe that's not the way it was.
So, what a conundrum.

Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
If you take Boyd from the equation there's a few similarities between Aish, Kelly and Sharenberg and the top three from the 2001 draft. Aish like Judd has had shoulder issues, Kelly like Ball a track star and maturity beyond his years and Sharenberg like Hodge extremely versatile.

Re: AFL Picks 1-20 Contenders
I'm now of the opinion that Boyd is the clear #1, and that we are after a pure ball winning midfielder. So it sounds to me like either Aish or Kelly depending on what happens with pick 2.Old Mate wrote:If you take Boyd from the equation there's a few similarities between Aish, Kelly and Sharenberg and the top three from the 2001 draft. I don't think Kelly is a "pure ball winning midfielder" more like a fast outside mid who can win a bit of his own ball.Zed wrote:I'm now of the opinion that Boyd is the clear #1, and that we are after a pure ball winning midfielder. Freeman looks the goods but so do a heap of them. Nice problem to have.
