Hope he applies and gets a position under Paul Roos at Melbourne .. and gets anointed as the successor. Not sure how else he will get to realise his dream as head coach.

Club legends don't seem to have a very good strike rate as coaches at the moment.

Voss - Fail
Ratten - Fail
Primus - Fail
Hird - Epic fail
Buckley - Failing slowly

Banger doesn't seem like a head coach to me… the best coaches weren't necessarily the best players

But the best coaches of all time where mostly great players... Matthews, Roos, Sheedy, Blight ect.

So hopefully Banger is one of those! :shock:

I'll give you Matthews & Blight, not sure about Roos's 1 flag…

Was Sheedy a great player?

Defenders make the best coaches;

Sheedy;
Parkin;
Pagan;
Malthouse;
Thompson;
Eade;
Worsfold.

Allan Jeans was an ordinary footballer.

Its not always relevant.
Players rely on their physical attributes.
A coach could be in a wheelchair and still function well with the right assistants.

Obviously understanding the game is important.
Do you have to play to understand the game?

We already have had coaches who never played footy at the top level.

This will inevitably happen more, as the focus turns more to a logical understanding/analysis/dissection of the game.

Playing clearly helps, but it shouldn't be the be all and end all.

One day there might be some tactical genius who never played the game at any level who will coach a team. Maybe an international coach? A female coach?

The conventions aren't set in stone IMO.

I don't think Rob Harvey will be leaving Colondud any time soon. If he did, I for one would wish him well in his career, but would not go out of the way to bring him back here. This "favourite son/legend" for coach call is a failed experiment for mine. I point to dragits list to back up this argument.

I don't subscribe to that theory at all. Matthews won 4 flags. Walls was a brilliant coach in his early years of coaching. Paul Roos built the Swans into what they are today. Blight won back to back flags at the Crows. Ross Lyon is the best coach in the business at the moment imo - and played most of his footy on ball or on a half Fwd flank.

Danny Frawley was an ordinary coach.

There are numerous factors that make a great coach. Wining the ultimate prize is just the recognition they get. Charismatic, great communicator, intelligent, hard working, organised, etc etc. Very few of these attributes are referenced to what position on the ground you mainly played in your playing career.

I think things are not happy at Collingwood.
Real issues. Walsh left, Buttifant is gone. Eddie mouthed off about a rugby match in Perth this coming weekend (wtf was he thinking?).
Its fairly well known that Gary Pert is strongly disliked by all and sundry.

Totally agree. Being highly competitive and motivated probably helps as well.
Charisma probably not THAT important ( Ross Lyon ) .

Out of interest does anyone know if there has ever been any assistant coaches who haven't actually played AFL?
Potentially I cant even see a reason a woman couldn't do the assistant coach role, except for the boys club mentality around the clubs that means even the guy who sweeps the floor is probably a former footy player.

No but he was very good.
Believe me, Sheedy was a great player and pivitol to Richmond's success in the late 60's and early 70's. It's too easy to paint him as an unskilled clown as time passes because he didn't have the poise and grace of, say, Ian Stewart or Royce Hart. He might have looked as rough as guts but he was highly skilled and creative.

I'm surprised no one has named these two...

Norm Smith - full forward.
Phonse Kyne - centre half forward.

As an aside, I'd rate Blight as close to the best, and close to the most skilful player that I've seen.

(Best is Leigh Matthews, but no slight on his skill levels, Blight was a far more skilful player... wasn't much he couldn't do.

I never saw our Doc play, nor Darryl Baldock, so I'll leave that comparison to those who would know.)
