What A List We Had?
I was having a beer today with my brother watching Carlton an Richmond and thinking how a list that we had didn't come away with at least one flag.
When you look back through 2002 onwards we had players of the calibre of Roo,Gehrig,Ball,Hamill,Lenny, B.J,Dal,Max,Harves,Kosi,Goose,Milne,ect.............
I am a believer in the footy gods and timing, but geez I shake my head in disbelief.
C'mon the Saints...............

Injuries slaughtered us.
Assembled a very good list, coached them very well - bit didn't have them on the park in September.
Heart wrenching.

Re: What A List We Had?
Injuries cost us 04/05. I reckon we had the best most dynamic and powerful list. Maybe pushed the kids bodies too hard too early?
Our list wasn't as good in 09/10 but had the best game plan going around and probably the best fitness staff. I'd be surprised if we had more than three soft tissues in those years.
Same with 97, injuries and bad luck on many counts during GF week.
Imagine five premierships in 14 years!

The 1991-92 team relied on too few, team had 5 superstars and GOPs
1997-98 was immature, again relied on a few and copped bad timing injuries
The 2004-5 lists were complete except a Ruckman.... Injuries cruelled premiership opportunities... And tactically inferior
The 2009-10 teams were tactically complete, but were 2 players short of being able to take the prize

Re: What A List We Had?
As everyone says our top 8 were awesome but our bottom 8 were fairly dubious.
Freo didnt have non contributor the other night. Only Tom Sheridan didnt do much and hes only 19 and was a sub.
We regularly had 3 or 4 blokes that didnt touch the ball. Remember we invented the myth of the 'role player' and the 'space filler'. Nonsense that noone talks about anymore. We just invented that myth to explain away that we had some poor players and still won most games so we tried to give it a positive spin.

Hindsight I know but It would have been nice if we rookied Barlow in the 07 draft.

Re: What A List We Had?
I believe if GT's coaching style had a little bit of Lyon's defensive pressure we could have won multiple flags .
If you watch some of the games we played in his time , we played exciting footy , unfortunately we were at times far too easy to score against .

I reckon you find though, the times we were scored against were the times we had key players missing.mr six o'clock wrote:I believe if GT's coaching style had a little bit of Lyon's defensive pressure we could have won multiple flags .

Re: What A List We Had?
05 for mine. Second half of the year was amazing once they were all on the park. Kosi/Ball in their prime. Harves still great. Roo a star. Lenny a champ. Gehrig still very dangerous. Hamill had shaken his injuries for awhile there and invented the term fwd pressure. The run of games between about Rd13 through to Rd 20 was unbelievable. Our best footy was easily the best in the comp that year. In 04 we were great, but the lions always loomed large, and Port were our bogey side. I just thought we were always a year too early that year.ralphsmith wrote:2004 list was the best saints list ever in my opinion

Amazing how quickly that list was assembled and could've been premiers.ralphsmith wrote:2004 list was the best saints list ever in my opinion

Re: What A List We Had?
I remember when our back 6 had Maguire, Penny and Max! Three KPD's at full flight. We don't even have one now.

Yep Freo have McPharlin 193cm (but plays tall)/Zac 196cm and Johnson 195cm.martymcfly_86 wrote:I remember when our back 6 had Maguire, Penny and Max! Three KPD's at full flight. We don't even have one now.
We currently only have Roberton 194cm (but plays 'small').
Maguire Max and Penny were bloody good.
Re: What A List We Had?
Some selective memory here.
Maguire was never a great key back. Fisher is better.
Gilbert is taller than Roberton , also plays small, but has developed his tall game to an extent that he's probably a better option than Stanley.
4 players who never got the ball? Really in the same team at the same time? I wasn't happy with the way players like McQualter and Eddy were used but it wantn't that bad either.

Re: What A List We Had?
The loss in 2004 at AAMI to Port Adelaide was a KILLER. Had them by the "Henry Halls" until the G train scored THAT goal and the game was disrupted by fans coming on to the field, completely halted the momentum and gave Williams the chance to get his side composed again. As I say, a KILLLER.
