New Fixture Rules
Here's some interesting new rules the AFL have snuck out.

Hopefully it will spell the end of the "locked-in" twice each year return blockbusters/derbies.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Re: New Fixture Rules
Arguably more significant and groundbreaking was that the league's boffins would utilise a "weighted" model for preparing the fixture. A decision on which five clubs your team could face more than once would be heavily dependent on the previous season's ladder.
Under the new model, the AFL ladder will be bracketed into three groups of six – simply 1-6, 7-12 and 13-18. To determine the five return or "double-up" fixtures for each club, a few straightforward restrictions are in place. Teams will be limited to a minimum of two and a maximum of three "double up" games against clubs in the same third of the ladder. For example, Hawthorn may only be scheduled to face the likes of Geelong, Sydney and Fremantle twice next season, instead of this year's outcome where the Hawks had to play five of 2012's top eight teams twice.
More interesting was the restriction that teams will be limited to no more than one return game against a team in the bracket at the "opposite" end of the ladder. So if minor premiers Hawthorn are scheduled to play lowly Melbourne twice in 2014, they would be restricted to just one game against league minnows and bottom-placed GWS.

It's not that complex. The key is getting rid of locked in games twice a year. This theory makes sense as long as it's not altered.
i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.

Yes that is exactly my fear.saintspremiers wrote: The key is getting rid of locked in games twice a year. This theory makes sense as long as it's not altered.
When Collingwood is in the top 6 and Piss'nDung are in the bottom 6 (or vice versa) will they change the rule so they still play twice to maximise their precious revenue at the expense of fairness?

Re: New Fixture Rules
You can bet your arse that if collingwood, carlton, essendon, kangaroos, WBD & Fremantle make the top bracket… the AFL will ensure that the 3 powerful clubs play each other twice to continue their revenue building dominance.
They might have amazing sophisticated software, but will still tamper with fairness whenever they see fit.
If Essendon aren't excluded from Anzac day next year I'll spew… Hawthorn v Geelong would be awesome, perfect timing.

Re: New Fixture Rules
I have no real prob with teams playing each other twice. But everyone has to play each other once before they start it.
It is ridiculous when teams have played another team twice (sometimes within 8 weeks) and they haven't played other teams at all. Stupid!

Re: New Fixture Rules
This would seem to indicate we might get a relatively easy draw. If so could see us matching or beating our premiership points from this year
Sides ranked in the bottom third (13-18) will have either no or a maximum of one double-meeting with a side ranked 1-6. They will have at least one but no more than two double-meetings with sides ranked 7-12. They will have a minimum of two and a maximum of three double-meetings with sides ranked in the same lower third bracket (13-18).
Re: New Fixture Rules
Although now I think of it I don't know if it helps our bottom line with us having to write a cheque to Etihad for a poor crowd.

Re: New Fixture Rules
Great, another thing to tank for, an easier fixture the following year. Why finish 12th, 13th is so much better.

Re: New Fixture Rules
I think you'll find that the rules most certainly allow the big clubs to continue to play twice, regardless of position.
Have a closer read. Derbies also will be allowed.
The exception would only come if collingwood finish top six and essendon and carlton both finish bottom six. Then we would get two essendon v collingwood, two essendon v carlton, and one collingwood v carlton.

Re: New Fixture Rules
I reckon next year they will introduce a ballot system for the bottom teams to determine their pick no in the draft like I think they do with a couple of US sports. With Melbourne and now GWS tanking its getting ridiculous and the AFL's system is to blame. GWS are going to be loading up on no. 1 picks for another 3 years. They'll just chuck Boyd on their stockpileMunga wrote:Great, another thing to tank for, an easier fixture the following year. Why finish 12th, 13th is so much better.

Not a hope. The AFL want to help the worst sides not the 6th worst side.
Re: New Fixture Rules
I think in the US they group the bottom 3 or maybe 4 teams in a ballot. Otherwise you get those No. 1 Draft Pick cup games at the end of the season where everyone knows you're better off losing but the AFL just deny rational thinking. Anyway we could use a no. 1 pick probably more than Melbourne and GWS. They are loaded up on talent and need to get their coaching and development right.
