Considering what they were faced with two years ago, I am not sure we could've asked for much more from our drafting (actually, maybe a backman, hehe)saintspremiers wrote:Our drafting had been pretty good for the past two seasons.

Re: Tom Hickey vs Brodie Grundy?
Maybe would should have kept pick 13 and hoped that Lachie Whitfield would slip through to us. But what about all the idiot other clubs who had a chance between picks 8 and 17 to pick him up. They are far more stupid than St Kilda. We had already completed our trade. They would be kicking themselves far more than us.Collingwood got very very lucky, especially when you throw in the pick 19 Melbourne handed them on the gold platter for a very ordinary key forward. Even the genius Geelong recruiting team passed up on Grundy with pick 16.
Yes, easy to slam the club on this one. Just too easy, and just plain dumb.

Re: Tom Hickey vs Brodie Grundy?
He was definitely a player who slipped through and there was a consensus that a few teams had already written off getting him so didn't have him in their first round sights. Pies got a beauty cheap- we got a ripper in Roberton for nothing so swings and roundabouts but doesn't hurt to imagine what ifs.
The irony is that most probably didn't take him because big guys take more time. I still think Hickey will actually be a very nice player in a few years- just hurts to know we got a ruck with a fast tracked development and a kid comes in and blitzes in his first season as a ruckman. He's a freak. I still think it's a shame we didn't get Kobe stevens but hindsight is a bitch.

Maybe wait till you see the Hickey & White combo next year.
Anybody that has seen White play give him 2 preseasons injury free you will probably think ok good deal.

Re: Tom Hickey vs Brodie Grundy?
Collingwood getting 18 & 20 for wellingham & Dawes is a travesty of justice.
I reckon if we were guaranteed Grundy with 13, we'd have taken him, but he was expected to go top 10, so you can't not trade for a need in the hope that players slip ten spots.

I think if Spencer White becomes something special no one will regret the deal.

This is a fan forum. We will be unhappy no matter what. We will still be complaining about Ball and Judd in 15 years.

Let's remember how good Kosi looked in first year!
We'll see in 2-3 years if Grundy stays great and if Hickey fulfils the promise that I and others see in him.

Re: Tom Hickey vs Brodie Grundy?
If memory serves me, I think Grundy was expected to go top 10 and possibly as early as pick 5 - and not expected to be there by our pick 12/13. They took a calculated risk to bring in an extra 2 -3 players rather than bank on getting 1 genuine top 10 talent who might slip to pick 12/13. They played the numbers game and I think overall, it could still pay dividends a couple of years from now.

The Pies have also stated that they had him in their top 5 players to pick.

Re: Tom Hickey vs Brodie Grundy?
Grundy was being spoken about as a top 3 pick all season, I don't think our recruiters would have imagined he would have lasted until pick 18.

Re: Tom Hickey vs Brodie Grundy?
I don't think Grundy was gonna make 13 when we had the pick. He looks really good thou. Still think hickey will be good. Does some great taps and can take a mark. To add white to the trade I think us pretty good. Hickey needs a biggest pre season in the gym to show his true ability

i have a feeling that hickey white and lee will all turn out okay footballers and will serve the saints well.......spot on wrote:I don't think Grundy was gonna make 13 when we had the pick. I think both those upgrade trades will work out will for us. We need to get more of a core of younger players, but this year we need to get the quality not quantity players

I still haven't written any of those guys off.
Re: Tom Hickey vs Brodie Grundy?
Well tdl was a mistake, I think he is ok but surely that pick should of at least been a punt on a key back men . Matt spanner would of been better service
