Can some please explain to me what Gwilt's appeal is?
He's been a protected species on this forum since 2010.
Like many, I was rapt with his 2010 form... was a star.
In 2011, contrary to many I thought he was vastly overrated pre injury. The opposition figured out to go through his man as he is not a good defender but a good play maker. Ppl say he was excellent but IMO what we saw was Gwilt set up a lot of play and his opponent regularly carve us up. The game V Essendon in that season the real low point. Every opponent Gwilt was moved to kicked goals in that period.
In 2012 we were told he's working his form/fitness etc up be easy on him... fairly average year.
2013
I u/s we're short of KPP especially in the backline but seriously... Gwilt is horrendous. Watching him on tv tonight, it's a though he was advised to start 5m behind his opponent... frequently led to the ball.
His disposal is way down
DOesn't get as much ball
ODesn't run as much
Doesn't have physical presence
Can't play tall
No way should he be playing ahead of Simpkin... quite frankly I think Raph Clarke did better... he at least got to contests.
I just don't get him.
What is it ppl are seeing that they like?

Simpkin is out for the year injured.skeptic wrote:

Gwilt has not been good. However he is often having to play as a key defender which he is not.

But seriously it must be time to give Shenton a go if he can be upgraded.

I reckon he's going to go better next year. He's had the year you would expect from someone that has come back from a knee reco. Not everyone comes back from a serious knee injury like Lenny. If he had a replacement they'd probably park him up for the year and get him right for next year.

There's the problem.CURLY wrote:Im sure hes wrapt to be playing key back at his height. Ideal as the third tall.
Like many at the moment, particularly in defence, they're forced to play roles that don't suit and/or they're not up to.
Guilt made his name as a '3rd defender' and a running playmaker. Now, he's forced to be the no. 1 defender and be a stopper. It's not his go. But sadly, we have no choice.

Didnt he come back last year?

Really? Has the coach mentioned that? I haven't seen anything about it.Munga wrote:Has bone bruising. Had to play. Shouldn't have, but had to.

Look, he ran out on the field with all the other players so as far as I'm concerned he's fit. If he's not fit then don't pick him. May as well give Jay Lever a game since we're presumably going to dump him at the end of the year anyway, and at least he's 200cm tall.

Runs like a slow dinosaur is the truth. All forwards have to do is run on a lead.
Re: Can some please explain to me what Gwilt's appeal is?
It has to be the Fro - can be the only explanation why our coaches would put him in.
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

His best attributes used to be his ability to read the play, his composure, ability to spot an option and ability to accurately deliver.
But his delivery is now letting him down.

Gwilty has certainly gone backwards this year, but in his instance, it is very fair to say that it has not been all of his fault. As others have said, he has been played out of position on much bigger bodies, has clearly played injured, has unfortunately had to play with an under-sized, inexperienced back line.
A good rest and a good pre-season should help him - let's hope so for next year !

I reckon all the backline should get special treatment over summer..they have been hammered this seasonJunction Oval wrote:Gwilty has certainly gone backwards this year, but in his instance, it is very fair to say that it has not been all of his fault.
