Just coming off consecutive losses of 110, 140 and 113 points.
That was a pretty low point!

Perhaps last night (and the massive Sandy loss today) is our lowest point since then?
Feels like we are in an elevator that is free falling past all those floors we painstakingly climbed one step at a time!

I don't think so, we got beaten by the best team of the past seven years. The Sandy loss has nothing to do with anything. Sandy were massively undermanned today.

I went to that game with 3 Collinwood supporters.
A long afternoon.
Only one goal after half time.
Some young kid called Daicos made his debut.

1985 was a horrible year. Did we end up with three wins that season? I remember we beat Fitzroy both times which was strange since they were a pretty strong team with Quinlan, Roos, Osborne and Pert etc. We at least finished the year on a high with a win against the third place Dogs. But then that lead us to 1986 - an even worse year.

Sainternist I think Patterson was coaching at the time - Graeme Gellie is one of the great tragedies for us - he won the B&F in his first year and then did a knee and was basically lost to the game. Was picked whenever he was right but was never the same. Came down from Derrinallum via one of the Ballarat clubs. His old man left Derri after a blue and went to Bradvale - won the league B&F at 41 years of age. Good folks and good footballers.

We had signed another kid from Derri - Gerald Fitzgerald - swapped him for Phil Stevens from Geelong. Has gone on to be a good coach at VFL level. Only played 1 game for the Cats - he also did a knee and that was the end.

EM - I was there as well mate - never forget walking out after the game and all the Woods supporters spitting on us. We had spent a packet to get that bloke McDonald from WA and he wasn't much - big Sidey played with one crook ankle.

Memories - things have been worse but we always manage to see some sunshine. Things will look up again.\

No, it was definitely Graeme Gellie who coached us that year. He took over in '84 after Tony Jewell was sacked. I think Mike Patterson coached us a few years before then. Remember, it was Jesa who took over from Patterson.

Never saw Gellie play, but heard he had a lot of potential. I always wondered why Gerald Fitzgerald never applied for an AFL coaching position after winning those premierships with North Ballarat. He was probably the next Dennis Pagan waiting to happen.

Apologies Sainternist I thought you meant 1979 - Yes Gellie could have been anything. The way coaching jobs seem to go now unless you are an assistant at one of the clubs you haven't really got a look in. Fitzy was a champion school boy - centre Half back or forward in the Teal cup team.

I was at that unfortunate game with my Collingwood supporter girlfriend at the time- though I must admit from memory their supporters around me were mainly sympathetic to us Sainters after that debacle. I still remember thinking that the team looked overweight, unfit and totally lacking in motivation. Gellie was a champion in the making, and could have been one of the Saints greats had he not done his knee. As a coach I don't think he ever had the support of the players, plus the club was a basket case from a business angle.
The game against Geelong the other night was very similar- too many players cruising and not willing to get the hard ball- and that worries me.

Its called humour. You should try it one day. By the way just in case you hadnt realised us whinging and in every post saying how bad we are and going back in history and telling everyone you knew this would happen, doesnt change a thing at the club. Nothing, nil, 0. So sometimes we humour ourselves.

And every single club in the AFL could find 2 era's so does that mean all cultures havent changed. You argue illogically IMO of course.

i just started supporting the saints and (just started primary school) as the previous year the saints just missing out on the finals (rex hunt stood out for me for some reason, when he was impersonating the goal umpire). Anyways, r1 of 1979 we beat Hawthorn the premiers of 1978(everyone at primary school barracked for the hawks, north or richmond) and i was a saints supporter. 2 weeks later we got utterly smashed by the pies and basically we were terrible for years after. we didnt beat hawthorn again until 1991 ( i think).

Mike Patterson was sacked after round 2 1980 when Lindsay Fox said he saw two Saints players bump into each other. Jezza was appointed CC and we drew with Richmond the following week.

I actually remember as a young 11 year old oin the outer that game. I think we left at 3/4 time , whicih in hindsight was possibly 3 qtrs. too late!
