Our last win at Kardinia Park
It was last century!
However, we haven't played there since 2004. That was in Round 18 and the game was close all day. Steven King stood out on that day in my memory and was the difference in the end. Wish he was with us all those years.
Our last win was with Tim Watson as coach in 1999. Geelong were pretty bad in those days.
My first journey to Kardinia Park was in 1961. The result was not a happy one, we lost by five points. And so it was over the next 7 years. At least I would get a train trip out of the experience.
In 1969, the first time we played them was at Moorabbin and Geelong recorded their first victory at the ground. Later in the year, after our finals hope seemed gone after a home loss the Fitzroy (of all teams), we went to Kardinia Park in Round 15. Things seemed to be going according to the "usual" plan. We were 3 goals down at three quarter time, Wade was killing us and we were soon five goals down a few minutes into the last quarter. The first train that was scheduled to leave ominously sounded in horn as it arrived at the station as if to tell Saints fans that they might as well leave now.
And then, a miracle happened. Big Carl went berserk and we kicked the next 7 goals and won by 2 goals. At last, I could take the late train home after a bit of a run around on the ground, making sure I kicked up as much turf as possible. I suppose Geelong eventually got their own back for that day.

And the match when that filthy Hocking took out Harves - ran through him at a ball up - no eyes for the ball.
But it lifted the team and we got up for a memorable win.

Thanks for sharing those memories perfectionist, always nice to hear stories from past eras.
My memories of kardinia are all pretty ordinary experiences...
I have a feeling it's going to be pretty ugly this week, cats smarting after another loss.

Re: Our last win at Kardinia Park
Finalsiren.com has the team from the day - June 5, 1999.
Peter Everitt (29 hitouts against John Barnes), Stewart Loewe, Andrew Thompson, Austinn Jones, Tony Browne, Robert Harvey, Nathan Burke,
Max Hudghton, Barry Hall (who kicked 4 straight), Joe McLaren, Justin Peckett, Ben Walton, Matthew Young,
Tim Elliott, Tony Francis !!!, Gavin Mitchell, Jason Traianidis, Darry Wakelin, Matthew Carr, Damien Ryan,
Lenny Hayes, Daniel Healy.
Enrico - You're right, Lenny must have been snipered early in the first quarter, because he only had 5 disposals for the day.
But 1999 was his debut year, with his first game only 4 weeks earlier.

I have been to a few games there, mainly in the 1950's. I never saw us win. Geelong were close to being the best side I have seen play in those days. Their ball movement was terrific to watch, unfortunately.

Lenny was I/C that day, although I'm not sure what that meant back then in terms of game time. Daniel Healy had one kick and one handball. What a strange player he was. He looked like he should have been a footballer but played like a spectator.philtee wrote:...Peter Everitt (29 hitouts against John Barnes), Stewart Loewe, Andrew Thompson, Austinn Jones, Tony Browne, Robert Harvey, Nathan Burke,

Harvey not Lenny was picked off by Whiskas. I think it was Ben Walton's finest game.philtee wrote:Finalsiren.com has the team from the day - June 5, 1999.

Re: Our last win at Kardinia Park
1988 the Saints came home in the last quarter thanks to a great effort by Nicky Winmar.
My mother had died that week and I stood in the outer wih the tears rolling down my face, thinking that she'd be watching and cheering for the Saints from the big grandstand in the sky.
My father who was not a sentimental man, said he could see her sitting by the radio in the kitchen puffing away in between sips on her grog, urging the boys on.
And no doubt she did.

Re: Our last win at Kardinia Park
My memory of that game was Lukey Ball having about 15 tackles and taking a serious step up as a player. We just had to win that game if we wanted to finish top. Couldn't quite do enough, even though Geelong kicked badly and kept us in it.perfectionist wrote:However, we haven't played there since 2004. That was in Round 18 and the game was close all day. Jack Daniels really was a lousy kick. Great to see the almost forgotten Tony Evans amongst others.

I've hated Hocking ever since that day he took Harvey out when the ball was thrown up by the ump....ran 50m and took Harvs out while he was standing around the pack as the ump threw the ball in the air.....scumbag of the highest degree
The good thing was harvey (missed most of the 3rd quarter) came back on in the last (saints behind/kicking into the wind) and won us the game with his brilliance.

Blake is one of only a handful of Saints to have played in an AFL match at the Cattery, with St Kilda’s most recent hit-out at the ground coming a decade ago -- a seven-point loss to the Cats in Round 18, 2004.
Geelong has played 66 home matches at the ground since then.
It is possible that St Kilda will field a team this weekend with only seven players who have played an AFL match at Simmonds Stadium, with the likes of Ben McEvoy, James Gwilt, David Armitage and Clinton Jones never having played there.
Hayes is the only Saint to have played in a win at the ground, the 10-point win in 1999 -- the Saints most recent success in Geelong.
5 games - Lenny Hayes *
4 - Nick Riewoldt
3 - Stephen Milne, Nick Dal Santo
2 - Leigh Montagna, Sean Dempster
1 - Farren Ray
0 - Ben McEvoy, David Armitage, James Gwilt, Jaryn Geary, Clinton Jones, Jack Steven, Rhys Stanley.

I've seen a few wins down there. My worst memory is GAblett Snr sending Kristian Bardseley to the plastic surgeon in 1996. The mongrel got five weeks.

It was a great win- I was there with a mate. Lets hope a couple of our guys play inspirational games this week..anything is possible with a bit of self-belief. I think my mum will be up there on a cloud cheering the boys on too.ozrulestrace wrote:1988 the Saints came home in the last quarter thanks to a great effort by Nicky Winmar.

Thanks for that. Too look back Nicky, Plugger, Spiro Kourkomelliis and Jayson Daniels, (not Jason Channel 7) and what a tough game it was.

It was so dark we could barely see down that end of the ground when Hocking performed his dog act.Freebird wrote:I've hated Hocking ever since that day he took Harvey out when the ball was thrown up by the ump....ran 50m and took Harvs out while he was standing around the pack as the ump threw the ball in the air.....scumbag of the highest degree

Re: Our last win at Kardinia Park
I was there in 1998 and 1999 - both great wins, especially the latter.
After winning in 1998, we surged to the top of the ladder with a really gutsy, hard-fought win. Loewe's 250th - and pinged for striking if I recall.
A year later, we were battling all game, and when Ben Graham goaled early in the last, we were 25 points down and seemingly shot.
But then we started to get our act together. Ben Walton played the best quarter of his life; Everitt was on fire and Harvey pulled himself together after Ling's bump.
When Harvey recovered to kick a beautiful goal in the last term, the standing room area absolutely exploded with noise - I've never heard a St Kilda crowd fill a non-Melbourne venue with noise like that. It was frenzied. A huge St Kilda chant rang out around the ground. The noise was brilliant and the players responded.
Geez, I'd love another win like that.
