Small fwd surplus
I seriously don't believe we can play 3 small fwds when none of them have the ability to play midfield .
Add to that we have Schneider and Milne and maybe the Minch.
Curren can kick goals and play midfield.
Get him in.

He must be doing something wrong in the coaches eyes to not be getting a look in by now.... Every single week he is in the best players and just doesn't get a go!

But is he the turnover king based on his low kicking efficiency?Jarred wrote:He must be doing something wrong in the coaches eyes to not be getting a look in by now.... Every single week he is in the best players and just doesn't get a go!

Re: Small fwd surplus
The difficult part is that both of TDL & Saad kicked 2 goals, which will encourage the coach to keep at least one of them in the side… same goes for Milne, where often he'll have an average game, but still kick his 2.
If you got 2 goals out of TDL, Saad & Milne every week, I guess you'd take it, but they really did have minimal impact outside of those scoring events… a specialist small forward has to be laying at least 5 tackles a game and really harassing and pressuring the defenders.
Saad is clearly struggling for confidence this year, but I thought his last game against Carlton was very good with 2 long range goals and good pressure.
As pointed out on here by many, Watters needs to work out a consistent set-up and then choose the players that fit, not just pick players that kick 5 at sandy. 3 - 4 small forwards is just ridiculous, when they are averaging only 8 touches per game each… it's like playing with 1 or 2 men less.
Make or break for Curren, but not sure what else he can do to get picked.

Re: Small fwd surplus
That many small forwards plays havoc with the midfield rotation. Some teams have 10 or 12 who can go through while we seem to have only 5-6. So either insist on them taking their turn or find players who can
Re: Small fwd surplus
should at least be given some sort of a go....bring him into the 22....give him the green vest......and see how he goes in a quarter and a bit...couldn't be any worse than some of the subs we have played this year.....dragit wrote:The difficult part is that both of TDL & Saad kicked 2 goals, which will encourage the coach to keep at least one of them in the side… same goes for Milne, where often he'll have an average game, but still kick his 2.

if that's the case leave him in the VFL.saintspremiers wrote:But is he the turnover king based on his low kicking efficiency?Jarred wrote:He must be doing something wrong in the coaches eyes to not be getting a look in by now.... Re: Small fwd surplus
I've seen him play a few times this year and I think his kicking efficiency his lowered because of his ability to extract the ball from packs and clear the ball... but when you get the ball in a pack and kick it out it can get in the hands of the other side. When he is not under 100% pressure and has time to pick a target he isnt bad at all! He would be as good a kick as most in our current 22.saintspremiers wrote:But is he the turnover king based on his low kicking efficiency?Jarred wrote:He must be doing something wrong in the coaches eyes to not be getting a look in by now.... Re: Small fwd surplus
Yeah I thought that'd be the case too with Saad's couple.. You watch him have absolutely no impact on the game 95% of the time, commentators (rightfully) tearing him to shreds..dragit wrote:The difficult part is that both of TDL & Saad kicked 2 goals, which will encourage the coach to keep at least one of them in the side… same goes for Milne, where often he'll have an average game, but still kick his 2.

But then Watters comes out in the post-match & says he & Trent were good with good pressure.. 5 tackles between them. That's just over a tackle a quarter, between 2 players.

Hard to say the pressure wasn't their because of the tackles laid. I was at the Richmond game and TDL worked really hard off the ball as he's done a few times this year. He gets up the ground for the link up and corrals the players in. He and Saad are still inexperienced but aren't going too badly. Milera can play away from goal and os the most likely to be able to make it as a true mid or rebound linking runner.
This is now a development year and we will keep playing these unbalanced sides now we aren't going to be playing finals. Saad, Milera and TDL need to get games into them like the kids- all still make rookie mistakes because they are still probably second guessing themselves at times.

Yeah didn't really mean to have a dig at TDL there.. I actually didn't mind his game.gringo wrote:Kiedis wrote:Yeah I thought that'd be the case too with Saad's couple.. Re: Small fwd surplus
In fact, I've completely flip-flopped from the beginning of the season to now believe he's probably the most likely of the 3 to make it.

Re: Small fwd surplus
If only we could bundle up each of their strong points into one small forward.
Milera has the speed.
TDL is a very nice kick.
Saad is very elusive.
None are very hard at the ball which becomes more obvious in a team that's struggling.
I think if we were picking our best team we would include Milney this week and possibly drop Milera.
I'd prefer Milney and Schneider in over the other three.
Adam... are you still with us ... ?

i think we have forgotten the bad bits of Schnides game- he can be a lazy player and never does more than he needs to also. Elite skills are there but Sydney got sick of his less than consistent work off the ball. Ross got him playing a more accountable game but he was still somewhat prone to it at times.
Small forwards play by getting into positions that offer scraps like out the back of a pack so when the ball rebounds they are often out the back and are not able to chase down the running defender who has 10 meters on them already.

Thats my view. No good having 3 opportunist tricksters licking their lips and waiting for a snack in the fwd line when the opposition are getting it inside their fwd 50 twice as often because they always have an extra player at each contest.
Also a bit more lock-in desperation would help. If our small fwds dont kick a goal then they dont do a lot else.
SW is talking them up every week but can I remind him we are 3rd bottom? If things were as hunky dory as SW sometimes makes out we wouldnt be 3rd bottom.
Re: Small fwd surplus
A Half Back surplus is also a problem
Resources for the ruck are out also.... List balance needs to be addressed....
We need more KPPs and a few extra mids, an A Grader would be nice
