2017 Premiership Side
I walked away from the heartbreaking loss to Collingwood in the 2010 GF Replay thinking to myself, if this mob could regroup and win a flage after successive GF losses seven years previously, then why can't we, so with this thought in mind, I've come up with a possible line up for us.
B: Newnes M Brown Saunders
HB: Roberton Lee Webster
C: Wright Ross Milera
HF: Markworth White Siposs
F: Saad Stanley Minchington
R: Hickey Murdoch Steven
I've deliberately left the interchange bench empty for us to pick up the final four pieces of the puzzle over the next four years.
There are a few surprising omissions that posters will pick up on, but if they aren't picked then I don't think they have what it takes to win it!
(e.g. Armitage and McEvoy, who are both too slow and one-dimensional to be game changers in our midfield)
There are also a few surprising positional changes that I think could make a difference, particularly Lee to CHB ala Fisher, who was also recruited as a forward.

Dont think milera would be there. And dont forget the filth had a priority pick and drafted thomas and pendles
Re: 2017 Premiership Side
I reckon McEvoy will only get better in years to come due to his endurance. Capping will most likely come into play and players like Dane Swan won't last.

Re: 2017 Premiership Side
I reckon we need to see how 2014 goes with some of those current younger players before we make any predictions. Siposs might be under a bit of pressure unless he can have a big pre-season and earn a regular spot in 2014..pretty disappoining this season when he should have been cementing a senior spot in a poor team. I expect Newnes to be the big improver, followed by Murdoch, Hickey and Webster. Ross needs to really get on the athletic track over summer and build the tank up. White is probably a couple of seasons off yet. Steven has scope to still improve.

Re: 2017 Premiership Side
Love the optimism but need to have a reality check. We need to get some midfield stars. We have a Lyon legacy of mainly GOPs. The rebuild started last year and I am confident that Pelchen will be a big draft player over the next two years emphasising ball skills in a "Hawthorn" type rebuild. It won't happen overnight but it will happen.

Re: 2017 Premiership Side
You really think a midfield of Steven, Ross, Murdoch, Milera and Wright could win a premiership? That would be a mediocre midfield in the VFL

i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.

The only certainties or near certainties that I think will be there in 2017 are Newnes, Roberton, Webster, Wright, Ross, Stanley Murdoch and Steven. even a couple of those have some doubt. The rest are just get work or may not be good enough IMO.

NO, but I do think that a midfield of Steven, Ross, Murdoch, Milera, Wright and Hickey could win a Premiership!

Re: 2017 Premiership Side
I don't think the 2017 team will look anything like that, trouble is, I can't correct that team BECAUSE I don't know who they'll recruit in the next 4 drafts.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: 2017 Premiership Side
While Armo is not a superstar, and does have some limitations, he is a fine (still) young player that we've put a lot of time and resources into.
To suggest that in the space of 4 years we will be able to field a 22 that is so full of talent that there's no room in it for him seems a bit fanciful to me. So I reckon he's a big chance to be part of any 2017 Saints team.

In 2017 GCS & GWS will each have 10 midfielders better than Armo unfortunately.darylcowie wrote:Beam me up Scotty!Dr Spaceman wrote:While Armo is not a superstar, and does have some limitations, he is a fine (still) young player that we've put a lot of time and resources into.

We love him cause he has guts, but he is a good honest battler really.

Re: 2017 Premiership Side
Webster's 7 games as sub haven't shown enough yet to prove much, he's a nice kick though…
Markworth & White could easily play less than 50 career games at this stage…
Let's be honest, every club would have a bunch of guys they are hoping turn into the players that they sounded like in their draft write up.
I think we're clutching… The guns haven't arrived yet, but they will!

Re: 2017 Premiership Side
I like your optimism, DC. Love the username as well.
It has also occurred to me many time since GF II 2010 that we could perhaps take a leaf out of the filth's book. However, at this stage, it seems we have quite an uphill climb to get there within that same timeframe they got there.
Gotta say though, I don't think there's a snowflake's chance in hell that Terry Milera will even be an AFL footballer by the time 2017 rolls by. But like you said - stranger things have happened.

Who are the top midfield draft prospects this year with an emphasis on silky-skills, anyone know?sasaint wrote:Love the optimism but need to have a reality check. We need to get some midfield stars. Heard both Aish & Kelly spoken of in this regard. Dunstan looks the goods, but does he carry a question mark over his footskills?
How do Scharenberg & Billings rank?
Be happy with any mentioned to be honest.
