Hawks following the Saints?
Mitchell 29
Lake 31
Hodge 29
Sewell 29
Guerra 31
Osborne 31
Gibson 29
Hale 29
Burgoyne 31
That's 9 players in the twilight or nearing their twilight
Strong similarities with our 2011 list. However, we didn't have a Rioli or a Roughead in their prime. We had a Goddard, though.
With Franklin off to GWS at year's end, where does this place them in 2015?
Lake 31

Gibson 29

At least one probably 2 flags better than us in our prime period. They will struggle but surely supporters wont care after at least winning one flag. That was our problem, we didnt win that one flag so we have nothing to hang our hat on.

Well thats very interesting. I been thinking the pies wre heading down the ladder just about 12months behind us. Looks like the hawks maybe 2 years behind us.

Re: Hawks following the Saints?
Have a look at other lists as well.
Eagles
Collingwood
Essendon
Geelong
Fremantle
Sydney
All of the above will be due to fall down the ladder between 2014-2017
I agree we won't be playing finals for a bit, but now is the right time to start a rebuild, draft concessions have finished, players will come out of contract at GWS and GC and free agency has started.
A couple of savvy trade and draft decisions will see our list rejuvinate very quickly.
Roo, Dal, Fisher and Joey could easily play the next 3 years with the right management.
Crawford snuck a flag at the end, after a very poor period for the Hawks with an arguably far worse list than us.
This is what Pelchen is for.

At least they won one in 2008.
And they will be up to their eyeballs in it again this year.
But yeah - in 3 years they may be in strife.

Re: Hawks following the Saints?
They did it in 2008 before the inclusions of 4 of those blokes you named (Lake, Burgoyne, Hale, and Gibson). It certainly helps to keep you in the premiership window, but also proves that you don't necessarily win a flag with topping up.
The Hawks haven't gone out and recruited recycled GOP's like we did in the Lyon era or players that were borderline talented. The player that actually helped the Hawks win a flag was Stewy Dew...and Stewy was a star premiership player.

+1 I was thinking this walking away from the game last night. I knew that this time would come but if we had won just one of those flags in 09/10 then it would be a lot easier to cope with the fall.plugger66 wrote:cwrcyn wrote:Mitchell 29

Re: Hawks following the Saints?
If you are a player about to become a free agent then the Hawks still look very appealing. They could easily top up with free agents and add some depth to their list with some clever trading and drafting. there is no reason they cant extend their window for a few years yet.
Our problems stem from our massive failure at the draft table over a number of years and our trading appears to have been anything but clever. There is a glimmer of hope that the tide has turned with the Saad Milera deal still very good value, and some promising draft picks in the last couple of years ..but the jury is still out on our 2 for 1 deals last year with pick 12 & 13, and whether we would have been better off holding onto them.

The Saad milera deal doesnt look good value this year. Milera isnt a very good AFL player. Saad still has some chance i suppose but neither can go into the midfield.

Milera is a downhill skier, will only play well in a good/winning side.plugger66 wrote:Zed wrote:If you are a player about to become a free agent then the Hawks still look very appealing. Good sides need them.
When you struggle to get inside 50's he struggles.
If he stays around, he needs a tank to do some midfield running.
Is/was a good deal, cost us stuff all.

Re: Hawks following the Saints?
we didnt really we give up anything for Milera and Saad other than a few spots on the draft pecking order. Milera may not amount to much but Saad has the potential to be a 100 game player. So in that context , it was a low risk deal that looks like it will pay a dividend. The only time we did a better deal in recent years was for Dempster and Schneids and that was only because Roos and Lyon were mates.

Re: Hawks following the Saints?
That's the big difference Con, they won one (may end up two) and won't end up bitter and twisted like players and supporters are at St Kilda.Con Gorozidis wrote:At least they won one in 2008.

Re: Hawks following the Saints?
Biggest difference is their capitalisation of the period of field as well as their continued development of the list for the future - Saints board and Administration has an awful lot to answer for after 10 years in the top half.

Re: Hawks following the Saints?
I would put Carlton into the same group who's ageing guys are nearing the end and not the same quality underneath. Judd is near the end and Waite is getting on and plenty of others.
Sydney will lose Bolton, Goodes, Ryan okeefe etc. Geelong will lose the core of their stars in the next few years. Johnson, Coreys, Mackie, Stokes, JPod etc -their kids want to be very good to make up for the loss of those guys.

Sydney have Parker, Hannebury, Mitchell, Jack, Kennedy, Rohan and Lamb as their future midfield. They won't be going down anytime soon.

They have some better kids but only really Christiansen looks close to A grade maybe Motlop at this stage then some solid to very good players with potential in Menzel, Duncan, Vardy etc. then they have some potential good kids in Smedts, Caddy and Horlin Smith etc. Not quite the dream list once the old guys go. They will still struggle to make finals unless another 4 or 5 kids turn out to be stars too.
