Koschitzke was racked with back spasms and had endured a pre-season interrupted by a knee injury. All this after a debut year that had defined him as a pillar in St Kilda's defence, and the AFL's Rising Star.
"I missed 18 games and never felt better than 50 per cent at all last year," Koschitzke said. "When I first hurt my back, he (Loewe) pulled me aside and said that he had a back problem early in his career, maybe a bit older than me. He explained to me what you do and what you go through, how a back injury changes your life.
