Lenny's coaching future

Post: # 1350064Post busso mick »

Would Lenny be tempted by a potential position at Melbourne?

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/d ... 2opkc.html

He has got the pedigree to be a good coach - hard-nosed, very competitive, universal respect and a good communicator.

Lets hope he goes around for one more year with us before trying the coaching caper.

I know for a fact that Richmond have approached him to be an assistant.

Hopefully he will play on a bit longer.

But I think he would make a great assistant coach.
Maybe his fist step towards coaching the Saints one day?

Roos isn't ready yet.

Clearly they need to add a nought to the offer!

Lenny would be as good a coach as Harvey - not bright enough.

I know for a fact they havent. Hopefully he plays one more year and coaches elsewhere until he is ready to be a senior coach at our club.

Do you guys reckon Lenny can play on next year? Lets assume he plays the last 7-8 games and
plays like Lenny always does. I really hope he does.

Spoken to both of them before for some time - both great people and club legends but coaching needs people with high intelligence - neither are stupid but dont have the spark for senior coaching

agree. not on the "bright comment" though. would have said "not complex enough" or "not an articulate communicator", "just sees the game as black & white", etc.

think of it like chess.

you need to be able to come up with a plan, not just motivate.

the game is ever evolving. no list is the same. injuries can tear seasons apart. you're constantly being dissected by the opposition. you need to be an elite thinker.

got the impression from a lot of footage of players joking about Lenny being an inspirational player, but a rather simple, nice sort of dude.

it's nice to have the odd friend like that. they just wanna relax, leave any intense conversation well alone, kick their feet up and have a laugh.

Lenny's coaching future

Post: # 1350372Post lloyd21 »

Would really hope Lenny is head of the academy at Stkilda next year.

Personally would like to see him finish end of the year rather than continue go out the Champion he is rather than a year too long.

Wouldn't mind seeing Lenny take up a role with GWS in a coaching capacity and learning the ropes there whilst helping out his home town.

After that, he can take a spot with us :)

Spoken to both as well. harvs wont make it as a coach but lenny can and I think will. Only based on the odd chat though.

Harves went through a very thorough and professional review process against others and came up short. Lenny will need to do the same at some time. Both are not outgoing personalities, but seem well suited to "support" positions. I think that is exactly where Neeld was best suited - not as the Senior coach.

Cant remember SW or RL having outgoing personalities when they played.

Without wanting to slide into a discussion on psychology, I think that both Lyon and Watters are far more communicative people.

We don't know the other factors, but Harves simply didn't stack up against other applicants for the Saints job - wasn't even no. 2 pick from what has been released. Lenny is yet to be put under similar scrutiny.

Im talking about Lenny. never thought Harvey would be a coach. My point is i doubt anyone thought those 2 players were communicative people when they played. Anyway everytime I hear Lenny talk footy he is very impressive. Pretty sure neither SW or RL did stuff lenny has done on TV before they coached.

I've been pretty impressed by his rare stints on Fox Footy TBH. Very well spoken and obviously has a sound knowledge of the game. He's always been one to "lead through actions rather than words" on-field, but he wasn't short of intellegent analysis and well articulated points of view on screen.

Comes across like a Rhodes Scholar standing next to that moron David King though, so my view might be skewed.

Maybe a year on the tellie might be nicer way to ease into retirement - hopefully give him & his missus plenty of time to start producing sons without the pressure of coaching!!!

how many coaching jobs did the current port coach dip out on...some didn't even rate him enough to interw=view him....seems he can coach though.......

Lyon not so much but Scotty Watters was especially at the end of his footy carreer in WA he was regually used as the player spokesman for the dockers , he even had a stink as a radio host at one stage ...

That puts him in the Brad Hardie, Karl Langdon group of malodorous footy experts.
