Spencer White
What is the chance of him making his debut this week? I heard he went ok on the weekend.

Re: Spencer White
Picked up in the same draft as Nathan Wright, and many others who are making an impact this year. Paperone at Brisbane is a similar height and weight and draft pick and has been given games. When they're ready, they're ready. Age shouldn't be a factor.saint6709 wrote:He is 18 - he shouldn't even be a consideration this year
In saying that Wight isn't ready IMO.

Re: Spencer White
I saw the Sandy game on Sunday and although he is an excitement machine he is still a Very Long Way Off playing Senior AFL footy. He has plenty of tricks but is easily muscled away from the ball when its in the air. We should also remember that he was probably pretty restricted with how much weight training he could do over summer because of the wrist injury he copped towards the end of last year. I don't expect him to play this year but I'm hoping that he can burst onto the scene some time next year, AFTER he has had a FULL pre-season in the gym !!
NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

Exactly right!! Age is just a number.. If your reserves form is good enough then it should be rewarded no matter how old you are or how much you weigh.8856brother wrote:Picked up in the same draft as Nathan Wright, and many others who are making an impact this year. Re: Spencer White
Most of the new kids are playing AFL are mids for a reason.
Mayes and Paperone for example have played senior footy all last year , White Tac ,big difference.
Listened carefully what was said from forward coach he quoted it will be 18 months before he will be a regular.
Or
Did you want club to do a Jack Watts and bugger him mentally before he starts.

His form on Sunday didn't warrant a senior call-up !!LTN16 wrote:Exactly right!! Age is just a number.. Well if his form hasn't been good enough then don't play him. Yeah that's right paddlepop 3 or 4 good game's then he would be pushing for selection.PADDLEPOP1001 wrote:Needs to string a few games together in the 2"s!

I didn't see the game. Just going on positive reports by some of our posters who said he may not be as far off as some think.Eastern wrote:His form on Sunday didn't warrant a senior call-up !!

Re: Spencer White
I reckon he will play a few games towards the end of the season whether his form warrants it or not - for experience purposes.
SW has said that they will be looking to blood a few more players this year and he is most likely in line to be one of them.

Re: Spencer White
Bumped into a current Saints player on the weekend, said Spencer White is going to be a player but has a bit of work to do. Does some freakish things at training. Sam Gilbert said on the radio that he needs to work on defensive side of his game.

Marco looked 26 at 15 though -he was the hairiest teenager ever and built like a truck. I really liked the look of Paparone and Stringer in last years draft two grunt natural forward types. Spencer looks like a baby still despite his size.

Re: Spencer White
His agility is amazing.
And his haircut oozes confidence.
But was easily out bodied repeatedly by that big beared Hawk defender - Spangher (spelling?).
Not ready to make an impact at AFL but should be given a couple of games to give him a feel for how much he needs to work on over the summer.

Re: Spencer White
If he's getting out-bodied one on one, get it to him on the run!! He'd leave the gorilla defenders for dead.
Lets have a look at him vs the Dees.

Gehrig emerged from scans yesterday saying he was "as sweet as a bun"
Re: Spencer White
I think 2-4 games this year would be good for him. Give him a taste for it before the next pre-season begins so he really knows what he is up against.

Re: Spencer White
Could end up being Daryll White this bloke minus any flags
Seems already the mercurial type - hope he is the next Buddy but such a long way to go that I see no reason to throw him in to a team and setting him up to fail at 18

Re: Spencer White
Get him in the side Round 20 vs. the Hawks (last home game where there's any chance of over 20k turning up), have him and Kosi (who would be playing game 200 and his last) roaming the forward 50, then hand over the keys to No. 23 at the end of the game.

Re: Spencer White
If there is a ever a game where I would try out a raw young player, it would be this one against Melbourne- they are a disorganised rabble
Re: Spencer White
Agreed he was outbodied - but although his opponent was much stronger (he's much older and therefore should've been) - he also infringed at nearly every contest, putting his arms illegally around White nearly every time. His athleticism clearly worried his opponent - so as others have said, let him get it on the lead! He's also excellent off the deck - very clean hands. When people say he's far away....well, that's their opinion - but he was clearly the best forward on the ground for Sandringham on the weekend (this was including players several years older than him). He needs at least a taste of senior football.
