Best GOPs of last 20years
Inspired by conversations that label players as "just a GOP" , I got to thinking of who are the best GOPS
I believe the best GOP in the AFL and has been for sometime is Heath Scotland, never gets mentioned, yet to see him play a bad game, often holds the team together, hard as nails
So my Saints Top 5 in no particular order
Baker
Blake
Thompson
Jones is Clint
Vidovic

Can probably add Geary.
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell

I think Thompson was a bit better than just a GOP for us however one of the bets GOPs was Justin Peckett.

Darryl Wakelin (100 plus for the Sainters before he played in a Premiership with Port) and Jamie Shannahan (you need to be open minded of course and try take the 1997 GF out of the equation )

Blake and Peckett stand out for me. Baker more than a GOP.

Joe Mc Laren, Robert Neil, Darren Bourke, Sean Ralphsmith, Daniel Wolf - good ordinary players.
Matty Young and tony Brown fit the mould of under rated guys though as do plenty of guys mentioned above. Peckett was more than a GOP just not a superstar.

Seriously you think Spider, Frawley and Max were just GOPs I must have a different idea of a GOP. Those guys were stars with out being super stars but more than GOPs to me.stinger wrote:desertsaint wrote:Blake and Peckett stand out for me. Baker more than a GOP.

Re: Best GOPs of last 20years
Everyone will have a different definition of GOP so this thread will just end up with people nominating their favorite players.
BTW.
Kosi, Lazar and Frankie Peckett are the stand outs in this category.

I mean seriously, talk about a scapegoat. In a team game the weakest thing to do is blame one player imhfo!!stinger wrote:nope can't wear him.....crap footballer who cost us a flag imhfo......unforgiveable....should have done a cowboy and knocked that retard out..... .Scollop wrote:Darryl Wakelin (100 plus for the Sainters before he played in a Premiership with Port) and Jamie Shannahan (you need to be open minded of course and try take the 1997 GF out of the equation )
We looked gone at half time even though we were in front on the scoreboard in '97. Their midfield was dominant and it wasn't only because we didn't have Vidovic or Spider that day.
We were getting beaten in the clearances and contested possession as far as I could recall. We were relying on 19 yr olds to win it for us and relying on goals of the year to get the scoreboard ticking over. If you're gunna say one player cost us a flag in '97, then I don't think he was playing for the Saints that day...he was on the other side and he was Gary Jr and Cyril rolled into one..and these days he weighs more than both of 'em combined

Frankie Coghlan.
Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.
Re: Best GOPs of last 20years
Vidivic.... Seriously?
90 games in 9 years??
I think some people are just throwing up blasts from the past... Most of whom were just fringe players at best... In years we might hear Polo, Peake, Fiora, C.Gardner
Jones, Peckett, Powell, Baker, Blake were GOPs that actually played/performed better than that...

The big Lazer was killing the ruck in 97 and with Everitt they were a pretty lethal combo. Cookie came in and broke Corey Mc Kernans shoulder and won us through but the lack of a decent ruck cost us on the big stage.
Re: Best GOPs of last 20years
very good honest players....not star or superstar material.......but i loved each and every one of them....apart from boofhead that is.....gringo wrote:Seriously you think Spider, Frawley and Max were just GOPs I must have a different idea of a GOP. seriously can't you see that my post was a bit tongue in cheek ffs....
.....i don't blame him entirely...another contributing factor was our coach.....
anyway...the saints pissed shanahan off after that game.......i think they had a reason of sorts...

Peckett was the first who came to mind for me.
Blake was the second.
Blake was the second.

Re: Best GOPs of last 20years
To me guys like Hudghton and Aussie are club champions and were highly skilled at what they did. Peckett was talented too.
I see someone like Blake, wasn't gifted much talent but played to 100% of his ability. Over 200 games and votes in just one, that says it all.

GOP's are supposed to be under skilled and make the most of their limited natural talent - Coghlan was a jet! In my memory standing on a chair to see the game properly at Moorabbin as a kid!!!SaintPav wrote:Frankie Coghlan.
