15% of umpiring decisions are WRONG !!

Post: # 1345211Post Eastern »

Yes, the umpires get it WRONG 15% of the time, and that comes from their biggest fan KEVIN BARTLETT.

If Bartlett can rattle stats like that off the top of his head I would love to know which players/teams are advantaged or disadvantaged by this 15%.

By my estimation there have been around 350 free kicks paid in games St Kilda have payed in this year. That would mean that there have been approximately 50 WRONG DECISIONS in our games. Of that 50, I would like to know how many for & how many against, but I reckon I am more a chance of flying to Mars than there is that the AFL would release these figures !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

We go to the footy to see "a contest" and are happy to see "clear" free kicks paid. The problem is that there are 3 umpires = 3 interpretations. Worse still, is that umpires are paid to umpire and are given a whistle, so guess what - their egos take over and they "umpire" the game to the technical edge and impact on the final result - stuff what the paying public have come to see!

What about the free kicks that are not paid? They are a decision the umpire makes that isn't included in these stats. This figure of 15 percent is therefore redundant!

When Harvey played his first game in 1988, I was a 12yo wearing short pants and struggling with my readin', writin' and 'rithmetic in grade eight. Now, I'm a father of three and a retired AFL player. And he's still going. Amazing! - Michael Voss

I for one would love KB to give a full explanation of where that figure came from.

It sounds like an off the top of his head stat to me, and we all know there is not to much up there to start with.

Show us the proof, KB.

I don't know if they get 15 per cent wrong. On Sunday it was closer to 50 per cent.

What it does say to me is that there are just way too many grey areas in the rules.

Keep it simple for Christ's sake and keep out of the game as much as possible.

In the back rule needs an overhaul.
High contact is annoying but don't see a way to change it without making it even more complicated.
Arm chop calls seem to be pretty selective
Holding the ball, I clearly don't even understand this rule anymore.

I don't understand the dropping the ball rule anymore either. It seams you can get rid of it by any means bar actually attempting to kick the ball and missing it.

Kicking in danger seams irrelevant now days also. In another match I saw a player had his hand kicked off and it was play on.

Humphrey smith agrees the Umpires had a 'howler'
and certainly ones like the Priddis decision were blatantly wrong

Umpires group should come out and say' we got it wrong..

buthe went on ' on the other side Montagna should have kicked the goal'--- Come on Humper don't give it both ways

I heard several years ago their benchmark was 87% right.
It's pretty reasonable -- 7 out of 8 snap decisions perfectly right.
The game needs the umpires to make black and white decisions on the spot.
Reality, of course isn't like that -- it's full of grey -- but for the sake of the game we need instant cut and dry decisions.
I think the umpires do a pretty fantastic job. We certainly shouldn't complain that they get 12% wrong.

I'm happy to scream abuse when one of these mistakes goes against us. It's still a mistake after all.
When they get five decisions wrong in a row -- that is probably incompetence.
