Motivated by what, or to what degree intentional you can only wonder.
But, in a world where we're supposed to be genuinely concerned about players falling in with bad dudes who may blackmail or bribe them into throwing games, what about the umpires?
Hypothetically, wouldn't it be much smarter to target and try to corrupt the people who control the whole match?
I'm not sure it's corruption.
I was thinking, perhaps it's because we're no longer one of the better sides, we don't get the better umpires?
It seems to be the better umpires get the big matches of the round, we're not playing in those blockbusters any longer.
Guess my point is we could just be copping the bottom ranked umps because we're a bottom ranked side.
Wouldn't a lowly ranked ump be an easier target to corrupt?
How else do we explain the count being so consistently lopsided, and us being on the wrong end of so many pivotal calls?
Could it just be that if the AFL deems the end result the 'right' one, then a newb umpire is less likely to be scrutinised?

HTB free kick to Adam Selwood with 3minutes to go, 70m out from WCE goal
HTB non free kick in the StK goal Square with 1:30 to go
HTB free kick to WCE on StK 50m with 20 seconds to go
In all cases they were measured decision that don't occur in a moment.... Decision all close together, 2 by the same umpire?!
Of all of those kicks.... The one to StK was clearly the most likely....
All of that aside, the leeway given to WCE players to spin 360 in tackles and dish of was nice for them in the clearances, and not sure of the kick count.... But I'll have a stab.... We lost the free kick count?
Maybe you don't know as much about modern football as you think you do...I could be wrong though, i'll get P66 to advise
They clearly play for the frees, has been brought up many times. Only to hear the defense of, "well they were technically correct". The fact the defense has to use the word 'technically' suggests there is something wrong.

Markp I am like you, what the hell is their motivation. Surely us paying 3.25 would be better odds for betting purposes. Does it just come down to the attitude held by everyone who doesnt barrack for Stkilda, that we are just Stkilda and we are great whipping boys. What upsets me about tonight, was that they started the game paying nothing either way, and then imposed themselves on the game, why????? What were WC paying to win by less than 10 points.
Yeah it's a massive call... but this year especially (I was almost speechless at the richmond game) ya just gotta wonder.
And money would/could do it, it's already corrupted sport to the core.
A stat put up on radio tonight for frees for and against since 2011 to R11 2013
West Cost have a +220 differential for frees opposed to all other teams
Next best is Adelaide with aprox +120
then it scales down through all the other teams
They fall forward often when not even pushed so draw them but some were incredible- Rhys ran front on to a contest was a free and obvious but then one of our players ran front on and was called before making contact for the same thing- must have been for frightening his man when attempting to mark a little known rule just amended tonight.
then a WCE player did the same thing back to the contest and spoiled front on no free???? I just don't understand. I said to my family at one point HTB doesn't get paid any more after about the 50th time a WCE player just threw the ball out when tackled then murphy's law saw that we got pinged about 5 times from that point on????
They need to bring back one umpire just because they are so damaging to the game. I would prefer an honour system because there would still be less f ups than these imbeciles doing the job.
We should lodge an official complaint about the fraudulent/incompetent/disgraceful umpiring.
Upside - we get a better run
Downside - there is no downside - all they could do at worst is continue to crucify us
Watters - say something!
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!
I just want someone at the club to chuck the shytes and make statements like fat ed would. The afl could not make it any worse for us so why not, just sick of it
maybe we should start training our players to do the same drop your knees when your tackled lift the elbow up so the tacklers arm rides up to your neck if you cant beat em join em
Surely if a player CAUSES the high contact by dropping their knees or raising their arms or diving forward then couldn't that be deemed staging for free kicks which I thought was now a reportable offence.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
if a player is seen to dive forward for a free then award a free kick and a 50 m penalty to the opposition - would soon stamp out the practice. Everybody knows who the main offenders are so would not be hard to adjudicate.
