Re: Game Day Wrap Up Saints v North
I feel sorry for Jack Steven who has tried his guts out all year and hasn't had a lot of help with the grunt work. If Riewoldt doesn't win the best and fairest this year then it will be Steven.

Our structure looks ordinary. Hard to tell from TV but I reckon there is no system at all.

And Ray was very good....Found space and provided much needed drive....And didn't turn the ball over like many.

Only 33 inside 50's
Stanley a forward which means only hickey or mcevoy in team which is a worry re drafting last year
1 goal all year between mc n hickey. Sad
Steven our only genuine mid with Monty - not enough
Armo- promised world early this year but has delivered an atlas.
Needed a big fb more then anything for 2 seasons
Need 4 new mids minimum
Saad needs mongrel and tackle harder on nights like tonight
In fact, lot of guys without mongrel or passion

Saad????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Lets se how many will give him excuses this week. It's actually embarrassining now. I could seriously do a better job. But as per usual he will get a game next week.

Dal Santo did alright in 2nd half in the backline. Probably his best game of the year even though it was our worst loss for the year as a team.

Yep: I think the high free kick count against us in most games is a symptom of this. Our players aren't standing in quite the right spots, hence are coming to contests a fraction too late, hence are conceding frees.plugger66 wrote:Our structure looks ordinary. As someone else said, Watters should put the zoning away for a while and perhaps even the loose man down back. Go back to basics: there are a lot of inexperienced players who would develop better by playing a very standard form of footy.

I don't think anyone would try to defend his game today, but he has been better than Milne all year, so rightfully not dropped yet IMO.8856brother wrote:Saad????????????????????????????????????????????????????

He is still our best future prospect for a small forward so will be given game time to gain experience & develop, is well due for a demotion now though you would think.

Re: Game Day Wrap Up Saints v North
It all starts in the midfield. Not enough aggression or class at the centre bounces. There is a lack of cohesion and organisation among our mids, and therefore a lack of belief from the rest of the team, meaning they are not running in support. Then, when the ball keeps flying into the forward line, we haven't got the tall defenders to cover the opposition key forwards and it just compounds the situation (Blake would have at least done a decent job on Black and I can guarantee he wouldn't have kicked more than 2 on Blakey). To me, we have some players who are playing under duress. Hickey, McEvoy, Fisher are struggling to cover the ground and I'd say most teams we've played look fitter than us. There is no easy answer, and that's what we just have to face.
Saad may have to be sacrificed in order to bring in a player who can play forward and midfield, which means Saunders, but really, what are our other options? Siposs is really struggling. He's slow and get led to the ball by his opponent all the time. Did he get more than 10 touches in any of his recent games? Maybe Murdoch should take his place for a couple of weeks.

The forward structure looked better after half time, it appeared on TV that our forwards spent most of their time in the forward line.
In the first half we had no forward targets, so were forced to prop and kick sideways.
This traditional structure may suit Kosi and may suit a small forward

Shitty at the stoppages.
Not only could we not win a clearance, there was almost zero pressure on the opp when we lost one.
Worst quarter of football in a decade.

Re: Game Day Wrap Up Saints v North
I could write a 5,000 word essay on the negatives, but I should really reserve that kind of effort for uni so I'll focus on the positives.
Steven is our best mid and our second best player. Good inside, good outside, great pressure, great goal sense and his kicking has improved out of sight.
Stanley should be a very good forward/ruck. He's our best tap ruckman and he's simply too fast and too big to stop on a lead. He had a bit of arrogance and intensity when he moved up forward that I haven't seen before from him. Between him, McEvoy, Hickey, White, Lee, Markworth and Siposs we have ruck stocks and athletic tall forwards covered for a while. Just need a monster (ala Boyd) and we're set for offensive talls.
Newnes showed a bit today. Usually he gets a few touches, but hesitates and goes for safe options. He took a few risks today and executed well. Seems to have a bit of mongrel too.
Webster had a great third quarter coming on as sub with 8 touches and a goal.
Dal had a crack all day for the first time this year.
Ray showed he still has value to us. He's a few years younger than the rest of our core and is at least a good depth player. He works hard and has a great attitude - can only be a good influence on the kids.

I was down on the ground level so missed the subtlety of the far end but it just went in clean and quick to the point where we couldn't touch it. It showed our lack of a tall defender for guys like Petrie who with gwilt next to him just looked like he was ready to kick 11 goals.
a couple of times we panicked and looked lost but more just because we would get hurt on the quick rebound from poor disposal. north are much better skilled and cleaner marking. We need to get Webster types in and some grunt mids to get the ball out of the centre.
you can have systems but when the ball keeps coming in quick it just turns to a siege mentality.

I'm starting to think Malthouse was a far better coach than we realized - because his assistants all stunk!
