Watters needs to stop kidding himself
We're picking teams like we're still trying to make finals. Except tonight we lost to an absolute rabble who have just dropped one of their best senior onballers as well as losing their best midfielder.
Of our 2004-2010 team, Riewoldt is the only remaining player who is playing to a similar standard. Hayes has slowed down but is serviceable. Montagna still runs his guts out but isn't as damaging as he once was. Dal Santo isn't interested, Fisher isn't as good, Milne has lost it and Schneider's hammies are stuffed.
Maister tries hard but no AFL forward can afford to drop simple marks and waste his few opportunities in front of goal. Jones has been horrendous this year and should never play another AFL game; tonight he conceded 30 possessions, 2 goals and a heap of clearances to Griffen while getting 12 touches and at least 9 clangers himself.
It should have started a long time ago, but for the rest of the year I don't want to see Jones, Maister, Blake, Milera, Kosi or Milne unless their VFL form is consistently head and shoulders above the kids.
Ledger and Curren have been dominant in the VFL all year and should have had plenty of opportunities last year, let alone in 2013. Dunell should be played, Wright must come back, Webster must stay in and Saunders should be sub for a couple of weeks at a time.
We are the third worst football team in the AFL behind Melbourne and GWS, we need to cut the dead wood.

Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
Finals well and truly gone. Time to do exactly what you say & give these young blokes opportunities.
Curren in for Jones is a no brainer for me. They say he may not be AFL standard but neither is Jones IMO & at least we get to find out if he is or isn't. What's losing with an experienced lineup giving us then losing with a team of rookies?

Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
This is the team I'd go with next week
B: Dempster, Simpkin, Wright
HB: Roberton, Stanley, Fisher
C: Webster, Armitage, Geary
HF: Montagna, Riewoldt, Dunell
F: Saad, Lee, Siposs
Foll: McEvoy, Steven, Ross
Int: Ledger, Ray, Curren, Newnes
Out: Hayes (inj), Jones, Maister, Gwilt, Milne, Hickey, Dal Santo
In: Armitage, Curren, Lee, Dunell, Ledger, Wright, Simpkin
It's sad to see a club legend in Milne on the outer, but he's not giving enough to justify his spot and he's not going to be part of our next good team. Gwilt is hopeless as a defender and is competing with Roberton and Webster for the rebounding half back roles. Give the spot to the younger players with more upside.

Just plain stupidity. Gwilt was our best defender last week.mad saint guy wrote:This is the team I'd go with next week

Bring him in to take fisher spot and send fisher to Full Forward
Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
Disagree on Milne. Who is our next 10 year forward pocket? Saad?
If so then it's important that Saad plays alongside Milne for as long as possible and learn from him.
I don't agree that Milne isn't doing enough to hold his place either. The delivery into our forward line is atrocious; how often do you see it pumped to the top of the square - where crumbers have a chance? Instead we have guys like Milera (last week) and Jones (this week) caught in two minds, end up doing the "team thing" and centre it straight to an opposition player.

Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
Both have been tried forward and both aren't up to it. I agree Gwilt was good last week, but that was the only above average game he's played since his doing his ACL. He conceded a heap of goals tonight and it easily could have been more if the umpires were paying closer attention to his moronic holding and scragging before and during every contest. He might be useful still as a rebounding defender, he's a liability as a negating one though.saintjake wrote:Just plain stupidity. Gwilt was our best defender last week.

Finals time, they aren't exactly who you bring in to make the side a serious finals threat

They both should never play another AFL game, especially if it's for St Kilda.SainterK wrote:You don't bring in Maister and jones if its finals like?

Agree. It makes guys like Gwilt and Rhys look way worse than what they are. I think our back-line has been outstanding this year. That's not where our problems lie.bergsone wrote:We got smashed out of the centre all nite,so forwards arent getting first use ,and backs are under immediate pressure

Milney has been one of the major beneficiaries of a great team and super midfield...Milney has had a great career and it's time for the next generation of Sainters...You might be onto something here but it's an accidental discovery...battye wrote:Disagree on Milne. Will Saad develop into a more valuable team player if Milne isn't there to compete and Milne isn't there trying to do the impossible or high risk things 4-5 times a game? What's so good about copying that??
Leave Milne out if you want Saad to be the best HE CAN BE
Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
Nobody should play exclusively forward pocket in modern footy
Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
Milne is a champion so if Saad tries to emulate Milne, fantastic.Scollop wrote:Will Saad develop into a more valuable team player if Milne isn't there to compete and Milne isn't there trying to do the impossible or high risk things 4-5 times a game? What's so good about copying that??

I think we should stick to the plan. Bulldogs have recruited very well. Some gun kids. Funny enough the compo from losing players to the franchises and some poor form has seen them get a supercharged list they will be very good in 3 years time.

Saad had 9 freaking tackles… he's been down this year but his pressure is 10:1 of Milne's with the same amount of goals…
The credits are farkhing over. Milne out. enough already.

These people living off Milnes glory days.....FFS if we do that we will merely delay the inevitable re-build.
Hes done - time to move on.

550+ goals means he has some credits in the bank. He's down on last year but he's got some company there. There should be plenty of places up for grabs before Milne's.Teflon wrote:Thanks Dragit - saved me.
