Tom McDonald
I think we can all agree that Melbourne is the worst team since the death of University; at least dying Fitzroy and 80's St Kilda tried, and could be vaguely competitive.
In that vein, and because I wanted to load up again after getting flogged in the Harry Taylor thread, could we be at all able to lure McDonald from the basket-cases?
Third last year in their B&F (for what that's worth), 21 next year, 194cm 94kgs, a former Rising Star nominee and held Rooey well before getting injured last year.
Thoughts on what it might cost us, and whether it would be worth it?
EDIT: Rory Thompson also big-upped in the HS today - 22, 200cm 91kg, former ruckman (sound familiar?), but a local boy and son of a local legend, so may be difficult to shift even if the inevitable salary cap squeeze bites...

Re: Tom McDonald
Not a bad idea at all.
Judging by recent history, the way Melbourne has approached it's list management they'll probably just de-list him if he asks nicely.

That would be a win win for both 2nd rounder and farren. Farren would be a star at the dees. They need some guys who could have runs on the ball.

Re: Tom McDonald
As a example (albeit far fetched), would we entertain an EPL-style trade for him?
Melbourne need hardness, run and experience in my view; would we be able to convince them that Curren or Ledger, plus Ray and a low pick? Would Staley for instance have any currency at all? We're going to have to pay overs, even hypothetically, if we want to get a bright young KP player, even com Melbourne.

Could be wrong but I'm not sure we can trade Rookies.Uncle Barrels wrote:As a example (albeit far fetched), would we entertain an EPL-style trade for him?

Yeah, I had vague recollections of being told that.Dr Spaceman wrote: Could be wrong but I'm not sure we can trade Rookies.
Ledger, Ray and a pick? Good for Faz and Melbourne as discussed above, Ledger gets a new start and Melbourne a young midfielder, and the pick as a sweetener.

Like I said, I could be wrong
Now that I think of it I'm surprised neither of you mentioned Tommy Walsh. Didn't we get something for him?

Re: Tom McDonald
Lets assume Lenny and Milne call it a day at the end of this year. We'd look like (in my view):
FB: Wright // McDonald // Roberton
HB: Dempster // Stanley // Fisher
CR: Montagna // Geary // Newnes
RK: McEvoy // Armitage // Steven
HF: Milera // Riewoldt // Dal Santo
FF: Saad // Siposs // Hickey
Int (from): Gilbert, Gwilt, Jones, Ross, Dunell, Simpkin, Webster

Re: Tom McDonald
I'd rather someone whose team wanted him to play than the alternative. Thompson has better players in front of him, but he's still not a first choice player when all things are equal. Didn't play a lot last year either, even when Adelaide was crying out for KPD.
McDonald over Thompson any day of the week for me.

So melbourne get a 27 year old and a player that we will delist. want to be a good pick. By the way is this guy contracted? Even Melbourne arent going for that one.

On a needs basis those two solve issues Melbourne have. And even then I said it was far-fetched and hypothetical.plugger66 wrote: So melbourne get a 27 year old and a player that we will delist. want to be a good pick. By the way is this guy contracted? Even Melbourne arent going for that one.
Anything constructive to add, like a hypotethical trade of your own, or is that simply too hard for you?

No id rather say that one is silly. I happen to think if you trade it at least has to look like a win win for both sides. And i would maybe think of a trade if I knew everyones contract situation but I dont.

Now that Plug has had his fun, anyone else?
I haven't watched a lot of Melbourne, I prefer to enjoy my weekends, but I do remember the job on Roo and my Melbourne-enduring mates have huge wraps on McDonald...

“ST KILDA says Tommy Walsh ignored a plea from new coach Scott Watters and asked to be traded to Sydney.
Despite new coach Scott Watters declaring this morning Walsh had a big future at the Saints, he joined the Swans in a swap for picks 35 and 68 in the draft.
Watters spoke to Walsh at length this morning, offering him a new contract, elevation to the senior list and more opportunities…..”
Re: Tom McDonald
Was pretty sure he was elevated at the start of 2011. Could be wrong, I know he was temporarily upgrade the year before due to a LTI but could've sworn he started the next year as a senior player.
