Lenny Hayes 2014
I have no idea what his personal situation or life plan is - but we should sign Lenny up as an assistant coach for next year.
You can guarantee almost every club in the AFL will be offering him a job for next year.

Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
I reckon we shouldnt and he shouldnt sign with us. get out of the club and try another club to get experience or better still if his form is like Thursday night he continues playing.
Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
GWS will be all over him, for a Luke Power style on field coaching role.
He is an inspirational on field leader, not sure what his coaching ability is like, but I can imagine he would have no trouble earning respect?!
If he stays on as a player in 2014, it has to be weighed up that a potential future player won't have a spot on the list to accommodate him.
There is much to be gained to having a legend on the list, in our stage of development there is also a spot on the list he's filling.
Interesting course
I'd love to be greedy and have him stay on in a VFL playing assistant coach role and showing the babies what a real jet does during a game.

Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
At least we know he can play the with mids that deserve a game if Lenny plays on because we are short of mids anyway. Watching on Thursday proves its to early to call his retirement.
Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
Agree on plugger. Needs to learn in a different environment if his going to coach. He would be only teaching the things he'd already knows.
Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
Thursday proves we got beat and he is still carrying our midfield, which is a concern.
It's too early to call anything.... I think you also need to know Lenny goes head to head in the midfield...
I've got the feeling SW has made a big decision about the list. He is aware that he has to improve the midfield.
Lenny, Dal, Joey.... One will not be in the midfield next year... Imo

If he retires let him go somewhere and be part of a premiership. Then he and harvs can return to lead us to glory as co-coaches!

Why would any player voluntarily retire unless their body has fallen apart?
Does anyone retire from a job paying hundreds of K a year unless under significant duress?

Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
The one thing for sure is that Lenny still has alot to offer either as a player or mentor.
As the next few seasons will see a lot of our champs leave ,it will be critical for him
To pass on his experience to our younger core.
He would know them better than anyone .
Would not like to see him leave .

Lenny not sure about, but as a senior coach Banger can stay where he is for mine.
Nothing he has done/shown off field tells me he will ever make it!

Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
How would people feel if GWS offered Lenny big bucks to be a player/coach for 2014 and he says yes?

I would suggest that is actually a 1000 to one but if it happened then that is fine IMO. Lenny will not leave the Saints to play somewhere else.

Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
On Thurs form Id agree - why rush a player out the door whose got the entire competitions respect? they are hard to get...matrix wrote:will go around again baring injury imo
Maybe he does play on, maybe that keeps a kid out for a few more weeks than he wouldve been blooded for but whats the benefot he gets from playing/training alongside Hayes for another season???? - Im still certain next year our midfield will need kids who need a chop out as its a long year..
That said, if mid year he's struggling to keep pace - he decides cause you know he'll do whats right for the club.
Not a decision we need to make IMO.

Don't most midfielders go head to head ,bar a tagger...?BigMart wrote:Thursday proves we got beat and he is still carrying our midfield, which is a concern.

Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
Makes me sick that our champs leave post retirement - it's unthinkable for the likes of Hird or Buckley or Voss to go elsewhere but we let our most valuable resources drift away to the benefit of other clubs.plugger66 wrote:I reckon we shouldnt and he shouldnt sign with us. get out of the club and try another club to get experience or better still if his form is like Thursday night he continues playing.
You want to build a long lasting culture pf success then start by hanging on to our jewels.

There is no proof yet that those 2 players have helped their clubs by not leaving.

Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
If Lenny's season continues in a similar fashion to his game against Sydney then he will play on. If he struggles to maintain that standard then he will probably retire and open up a spot for a young mid to develop. We won't know for some time yet.
Re: Lenny Hayes 2014
How has everyone seen his season as a whole as far...
His game vs Sydney was good, probably got the better of Kennedy which is a good scalp, has been serviceable in the other 4 IMO and lowered his colours a few times..... Often looks frustrated this hear, especially with umps... Who have pinged him a bit...
No, not all mids go head to head in a straight shoot out.
Of the 3 in the square
#1 is generally ran with ..... Dal Santo/Armo
#2 goes head to head ..... Hayes/Steven
#3 generally runs with opps #1 ..... CJ
One winger is more defensive........ Gilbert
One winger is more offensive......., Montagna
