They were just pathetic calls from the umpire. Twice Stanley engaged the Sydney ruckman and immediately had the free called against him because McEvoy was also in the vicinity. Stanley is a much better tap ruckman than McEvoy and it's perfectly possible that he is instructed to take the hitouts in the backline. The umpired guessed both times and paid the frees against us.

What shat me was that they would let several go then pull out soft ones then ignore several more similar ones. Every contest can be an infringement in afl. They need to leave the game to run and teach them that frees are not just pulled out. Let them see the out come of a free kick in front of goal and what it can mean in a game.

Exactly. There was no illegal push or hold, the umpire paid the free kicks for a third man illegally engaging the Sydney ruckman when Stanley was actually just contesting.

You can engage but you cant run in front and block which is what Stanley. I didnt pay the free by the way and it will be cleared as 100% correct but then people will say the AFL is lying.

that's two i thought sucked...plus the shirt front to dal way after he got rid of the ball...there were others too.....kosi and stanley should know better....their errors cost us two goals.....add the one taken off us and we were in with a show.....

The rub of the green always seems to go with side on top. Happens in cricket as well, which makes the slow death towards a loss even harder to take.

I am against the umps as much as the next Saints person, but we got away with a few towards the end. Maybe their bloke was ducking, but we did get away with those. Sadly didn't make up for the earlier soft ones that seem to keep them in the game and then kick away.
