I know some aren't sold on this being a good idea, but it's actually quite exciting

St Kilda are determined to make Wellington feel like a second home as they prepare to host the first overseas AFL game for premiership points in the New Zealand capital on Thursday night.

While their opponents for the historic Anzac Day clash, the Sydney Swans, flew in to Wellington today - the Saints arrive tomorrow - St Kilda chief executive Michael Nettlefold is hopeful of attracting the lion's share of support.

More than 2500 St Kilda members are flying from Melbourne, compared to 1500 of their Swans' counterparts. And Nettlefold hopes that of the roughly 20,000 locals expected to attend, the majority will adopt the Saints, given they have driven the concept and will host two games per season there from next year onwards

2,500 Saints members is amazing. Incredible that approx 8% of all members are going!

I guess it's a big event. First ever international game for points.

Next year I'm guessing 1,000 max members per game.

I find it amazing but sad that adults over 40 haven't been O/S.

You've lived a pretty sheltered life staying in Oz exclusively IMO. Going to NZ is hardly a real O/S experience, given all the Kiwis that live here.

Don't knock home bodies- many don't feel the need to travel- or wish to experience the hassle-
I admire those who do travel a lot but learning more about Here is good for me

NZ feedback
http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/co ... L-was-good
OPINION: I found myself (along with 22 thousand or so others) at Westpac Stadium on Anzac night watching a game of Aussie Rules.

It was a good night, but kind of weird. First thing I noted was the lack of tattoos. While body art seems almost compulsory in league, union, football, boxing and dozens of other sports these days, I couldn't discern any stamps on the 36 players rushing around the big oval on Thursday night. Maybe none of them had been good enough to get any.

Second, there actually seemed to be a lot of sport going on and bugger all stoppages for lineouts, scrums, throw-ins or injuries. It made it bloody tiring to watch and I imagine even more tiring to play.

Third, they let trainers on to the field during the game. Instead of sending out a waterboy or a medic with some instructions from the coach while someone feigned an injury, one guy from each team dressed in high-vis orange ran around giving instructions and organising subs, which meant the guys could get on with playing.

Fourth, there were more refs and linesmen than you could shake a stick at. I lost count of how many match officials were on the park. But it meant there were very few disputed calls and just one video replay, thus adding to the huge amount of actual game time in the two-hour spectacle.

So weirdest of all I actually enjoyed my rules experience and have to say I would go again if the opportunity arose.
