With Rhys Stanley, why doesnt the club start him off like Plugger was started, in the Forward pocket. The trio of Kosi, Gehrig, and Roo worked.

I don't think RS would be too bad as a backman. But he should do well anywhere he plays just not this season -unless we are decimated by injury. What was the sandy player Will? someone who is a tall back - I would say he is a future backline player they also picked up Winmar who some say will play back so RS will probably be a future forward.

The backline looked exposed when Fisher went down. They need Raph back quick and possibly L.Fisher as a back flank. He looked pretty composed in his Nab cup game. The backline works as a unit but really looked vulnerable with a few missing.

Isn't this the exact reason that we drafted the 'ready made' 191cm, 91kg key defender Will Johnston?

Ross did say he expected Will to play senior footy this year.

Give him a go I say.

I have no doubt that Stanley will be a very good player maybe even better.
But lets give the boy a chance to develop. He showed a couple of good things in the NAB cup and everyone is saying he is our saviour.
I'm surprised I haven't read

"Lenny is getting on a bit maybe Stanley should take his place"

He only played one game (maybe 2 can't remember vs Pies) of the NAB cup where he wasn't a sub. That means he was 25th or 26th Picked. In the game he did play he did not much at all.

What has he shown that means he should be our Full Back?

Based on Johnson being a mature aged, big body key defender...

Im not in Melbourne so I havn't seen much of him, and am only going on what I have read. What has he done in the preseason? Did he play in the trial game for sandy??

Why else would we draft him?

The same reason we got the 6 players this year. Doesnt mean he is ready or good enough yet. I think he s only 20 years old.

Blake , Dawson and Gwilt will all probably play FB and CHB at different stages.

We have the personnel.

It's our forward line which concerns me more - we rely too heavily on Riewoldt .

Well move him to FB. That will solve 2 problems at once.

Rhys Stanley would be pretty handy at full back IMO.

The G train started his career as a handy full back.
Rhys Stanley = 2nd Year apprentice. Position still to be determined, probably Ruck/Forward

G started at West Coast on the Wing !!

No he didnt. He was a winger, HFF for the WCE for at least 5 years.

He also played full back, he played HFF and wing predominantly, but he definately played FB. I didn't see many WC games but I saw him play in defence a few times.

In one game when G was kicking out from FB he played on and took I reckon about 6 bounces, baulked about 5 guys and ended up in the centre square, it was freakish!

G did a lot of the kicking in but he played Wing/HFF. Ashley McIntosh was their Full Back at the time !!

Gtrain was FB when he came to the Saints.
I beleive Rhys should be played in the Seniors. Let him learn and develop in a FP or HFF. In the past he would have played last season. He is good enough.

Ok fair enough, no possibility that he may of played FB when AM missed a game?

Anyway my point regarding Fraser is that a player can go move from deep in defence to deep in the offence during their career.

Let me refrase what I originally said Fraser moved from FB to FF midway through his career...my apoligies if I offended anyone...

Our best Full Backs over the years, Verdon howell was recruited as a Centreman, and won a Brownlow at FB. Bob Murray played all his football at CHF, until he replaced Verdon, and was our Premiership FB. Even Cowboy ended up at FB.
Not so common for players to play at FB and end up at FF as GTrain did.

Yes I do hope the medical assessment on Goose was correct.
If he recovers fully his loss will be a major embarrassment.
Especially as it appeared to me, at the time, that his delisting looked like it may have been because the club expected to retain Ball.

Rhys Stanley would be pretty handy at full back IMO.

Some people have touted him as Rooeys replacement or even taking Kosi's spot right now, but I think he could be of use down back.

The G train started his career as a handy full back.

He is as quick as they come. So he'd be good on the lead.

He's tall and lanky Dustin Fletcher esq.

He appears to be pretty strong for one on ones...he'd need to bulk up but even now I still think he'd go ok.

And what strength he lacked I'm sure his height and leap would make up for.

His pace, would allow him to run, carry, and break the lines, a bit like a taller Gilbo.

Anyone else see this as a possibilty?

Btw sorry if this has already been discussed...
Bump... I thought I'd got in a few months earlier.
