Bruise free footy . Are we too thin?

Post: # 1312602Post Con Gorozidis »

Ok ok. I know it's not like me to go early. But I'm going early.
We are too thin. Across the board. We have ballsed up pre season.
Now every year some players are required to trim up and some bulk up. Depending on individual circumstances and team balance etc etc.
But this year. Maybe only Jimmy Webster markworth curren and newness aside. The other 30 odd blokes seem to have trimmed up. Now I can handle a few trimming up (Schneider for example could drop a few kgs) but seriously we look so thin across the board im just totally alarmed.

We are going to get out muscled all year. We look like we spent summer training up for a triathlon or something.
It's good to be fit but you still need a few large units running around.
Big Mac is our only big body and he's slow it doesn't really matter.

Isn't it because we have a number of players getting older, and they tend to drop kilos in order to retain some of their pace?

Might play a role for some of them. But that still means we have the balance wrong.
For every old guy who thinks trimming up might help there should be a younger guy bulking up.
Doesn't look to have happened. I mean id have liked more size on Geary siposs milera Saad Ray Lee TdL and Maister but they all look gaunt.

Johan Blake is bulky. Hasn't slowed him down.

I must say I havent noticed at all. Newnes looks like he has a very good build but he got constantly bumped off the ball.

Milney looks like he's wearing a floatation device under his jumper....

Saad looks too Heavy

But overall players have dropped weight out of necessity..... Running demands have increased by 20% in the last 3 years.... Armo, Lenny, Dal, Jack have all stripped down

Horses for courses. I agree with you on those blokes but sheesh. Lenny and nds were good last year.did they need to change ?
Jack needed to get fitter.
But you can't tell me you're not disappointed with tdl and siposs physiques.
No way can tdl expect to survive in the Afl. Same as Lee.
Just seems a few players had wasted summers to me .
Newnes is still only 19. So still not strong enough.
I would have preferred maister bulk up and become a stay home fwd who can take a contested grab inside 40 not another tall flanker. s*** we have lots of them.

Siposs is probably to big IMO and could get fitter (btw he is only a bit older than Newnes)

Size doesn't help some players games.... Not sure how 5kg would help TDL

Lee is going to take time to add weight to.... But he should aim to be a Riewoldt type build... Mobility is his strength.

There is often a trade off with size.... The modern game requires running....

Newnes is only 19 so I'm not going to judge him yet.
And maister got fitter.

But id have liked him to be more of a stay home target that could take a contested grab. Not another
flanker. He couldn't take on on say night and it hurt us.
Have I seen the size of Travis cloke?

Maister was bigger last year and it didnt seem to help. No point comparing him to Cloke. If Cloke had Maisters abilty he would be an average player. TDL has looked that weight for the last few years. Siposs looks the perfect build to me. Wouldnt want him any bigger.

Definitely a trade off but im saying we got the balance wrong.
If not we might as well recruit Craig mottram and some Olympic marathon runners.
I believe we have gone too far on the running side.

You say we have it right. So lets agree to disagree.
See how the season pans out. But we don't exactly scare the opposition.
We play sociable football and I dare say opposition sides will enjoy playing against us.
We are playing bruise free footy.
Melbourne style.

We had 4 players in 1997 who may not have laid a tackle during the season.... Luckily Burkie did it for them

It's not addressing the problem. We're not good enough. Bulking up won't help but would like to see in us in one or two more games before I conclude that is in fact the case.

Should be bigger
Should be POds size. But looks too trim for me. Naturally hes a big man. Not strong enough for mine.

Our motto should be 'Play the Saints - Bruise free in 2013'

Sorry be we arent the fearsome outfit we were in 2009.

We have gone soft at the edges.

He was bigger last year and that didnt help him. They want him to run more as all footballers do even Cloke. There is no real monsters who dominate anymore. if Plugger played today he would struggle or have to get very fit.
