Re: Good Friday footy
SainterK said " I have my own faith which is very important to me, that being said it wouldn't bother me if it was played on Friday because I personally put a stronger emphasis on celebrating the meaning behind it a lot more often than a ritual once a year... "
That is really well put SainterK. I am in exactly the same boat as you. If every day is special, why isolate one day in particular. It's a shame that people with a faith are sometimes howled down as causing problems when it is conservative religiousity that chokes this sort of discussion, not faith.
Working with my local juniors club we have just been told all games must be on Sunday. A few families have dropped out. We haven't lost a lot of kids because of a faith perspective. Most families resent their family day being interrupted and the whinging will go on for some time.
I think that may be the case with Easetr Friday. Many people want even a basic rest from the rest of life at some stage for family. Me, I wouldn't mind watching a good game after church. Maybe that's a prompt to be more daughter/father oriented on such occasions and use the break to a more positive family benefit.

Sure, but can you think of any other reason why 2 games were played a week early than the rest this year?plugger66 wrote: If it was greed would you start with Sydney GWS last year and Adelaide Essendon this year? I wouldnt.
I get the cricket issue, but why not start all teams this week?

I told you my reason. They actually want to start the season earlier so they get 2 byes. This is to put pressure on the cricket authorities. Whinge for one or two years and they will cave in. Expect an ealier start next year.

That's it, and that's why Dimwit refused to schedule a game at Etihad last week, even if it was to the detriment of the clubs that could've played there (Easter Sat and Sun is not ideal for round 1, last week is better!)plugger66 wrote:dragit wrote:Sure, but can you think of any other reason why 2 games were played a week early than the rest this year?plugger66 wrote: If it was greed would you start with Sydney GWS last year and Adelaide Essendon this year? So they butcher the start of our season to put pressure on an already struggling rival code. Pretty poor don't you think?plugger66 wrote:dragit wrote:Sure, but can you think of any other reason why 2 games were played a week early than the rest this year?plugger66 wrote: If it was greed would you start with Sydney GWS last year and Adelaide Essendon this year? No not at all when it is likely that at least 2 if not all 3 grounds will be vacant on that day and even if used there would be lucky to be 1k there. They will get the grounds in the next year or two IMO. And I dont see how it butchers the start of the season but we all see things diffferently. i take you dont want players to have 2 byes?

Re: Good Friday footy
I think that having two byes would be a good reason to add a week to the season if it was beneficial to the players health & well being. But I don't think adding a week of only 2 matches for the sake of pissing off another code is a very good reason, actually looks childish & unprofessional IMO, but I get what they are ultimately trying to achieve.

Be careful what you wish for.
Remove the sanctity of Easter and you remove the relevance of celebrating the event.
Next thing you know - goodbye Good Friday holiday. For all of us! You bastards!

Is Good Friday a family day? I think not.SainterK wrote:Maybe people don't like time with their family?IluvHarvey wrote:I don't understand why its such a big deal?
People jump up and down about it every year.
I have no issues with no Footy on Good Friday.
Easter Sunday is a family day and we play footy then!

Re: Good Friday footy
Not sure if it has been explained in the past but why/how is it o'k to play football on Easter Sunday and not Good Friday?
Are they not both religious occasions and just as holy as each other? Died Friday, rose Sunday.

why? do up lead a boring existence ? lolsaintspremiers wrote:Anyone apart from Demteriou still against it?
Surely it's time.
eat some fish with your family and enjoy your good Friday Easter break and let the players have a day off too!
Re: Good Friday footy
great argument if it wasn't that you cannot play anything on yom kippur in Israeltweedaletomanning wrote:If they can play a Grand final on "Yom Kippur" the Holiest day of the year for the Jewish people.
Then they can play a game on "good friday".
Otherwise isn't that religious bias or something? ( wink)
you'd be liucky to make it home alive if up drove your car.
not sure how less than half a percent of the population always need to feel like they need to talk about Judaism when talking about whether Footy should be played on good Friday or not.
yom kippur is negligible in Australian mainstream society so unrelated and can't be used as an excuse in this debate. lol ridiculously funny
Re: Good Friday footy
actually people who want good Friday Footy are NOT the majotity of society!Viking3 wrote:Well said 'dragit'.dragit wrote:Funny you should mention that Noob… The entire season starts the week before Good Friday this year because the AFL believe so strongly about not playing football on a holy day except… wait for it… they are not willing to forgo the revenue of a single Friday night match, so instead of just having Good Friday off, we have the entire season extended by a week & a split first round. But we don't have time for the players to get two byes a year, no way, the season just goes for too longnoob wrote:If the season started after Good Friday then these discussions wouldn't be brought up.
If someone elses religious beliefs are important enough to stop the rest of enjoying what we normally do on a Friday night, then the AFL should have the courtesy of missing out on one single Friday night games revenue, instead of completely stuffing up the beginning of a season with an absurd split/bye round one.
Feel like I've mentioned this before somewhere?
I respect that people have faiths and beliefs that mean sport on certain days is not kosher, but should everyone else have to follow the same ideals? We never used to play football on a Sunday either, times change, devout followers should be free to boycott any matches that fall on their said holy days, but I don't believe everyone else should have to adhere.
Like most things in the world today the minority have a greater say than the majority.
some of this stuff in here is ridiculous!
go into the office and work yourself on good Friday before expecting others to entertain you as yopu sit on your lazyboy chair making foolish demands on others!
last time I checked it was called good Friday holiday!
that's why you get that day off!
some people are extremely funny. lol

Agreed! Especially your logic in your post.St Igmata wrote:some of this stuff in here is ridiculous!
What a pointless comparison! There are an increasing number of industries that have to work on GF. You can catch public transport, watch a movie at the cinema, watch rugby and soccer, place a bet, buy overpriced groceries (at 7-11) and fill up your car just to name a few.St Igmata wrote:go into the office and work yourself on good Friday before expecting others to entertain you as yopu sit on your lazyboy chair making foolish demands on others!
AFL Players play on Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, ANZAC Day and Queen's Birthday. They also play on Mother's Day and Father's Day. But they only play for six months of the year doing a job they would probably do for far less money. I think they have it pretty good.
Except for the previously mentioned industries. And don't forget to mention all the holidays that I mentioned above.St Igmata wrote:last time I checked it was called good Friday holiday! that's why you get that day off!
I get that day (and all the other public holidays) off because I work 5 days a week, 52 weeks of the year.
Compare apples with apples next time.

Most people that I have spoken to are not attached to keeping good friday football free.

A game on Good Friday.
Play one, see what happens....

St Ignoramus, you seem to only post on religious topics defending your religion, whatever that is.
Maybe if you ever posted on footy threads we would perhaps take a little notice in what you say.
Anyway, I work 4 days a week on a rotating roster and didn't get paid for my day off yesterday - even though my workplace is closed for business and I couldn't work even if I wanted to! (Although they appear to be wrong on this and are likely to be taken to Fair Work Australia).

Just play, for god's sake! (pun intended) . Seriously, not playing due to a few people being supersticious is a litttle silly.
