That is really well put SainterK. I am in exactly the same boat as you. If every day is special, why isolate one day in particular. It's a shame that people with a faith are sometimes howled down as causing problems when it is conservative religiousity that chokes this sort of discussion, not faith.

Working with my local juniors club we have just been told all games must be on Sunday. A few families have dropped out. We haven't lost a lot of kids because of a faith perspective. Most families resent their family day being interrupted and the whinging will go on for some time.

I think that may be the case with Easetr Friday. Many people want even a basic rest from the rest of life at some stage for family. Me, I wouldn't mind watching a good game after church. Maybe that's a prompt to be more daughter/father oriented on such occasions and use the break to a more positive family benefit.

I told you my reason. They actually want to start the season earlier so they get 2 byes. This is to put pressure on the cricket authorities. Whinge for one or two years and they will cave in. Expect an ealier start next year.

That's it, and that's why Dimwit refused to schedule a game at Etihad last week, even if it was to the detriment of the clubs that could've played there (Easter Sat and Sun is not ideal for round 1, last week is better!)

No not at all when it is likely that at least 2 if not all 3 grounds will be vacant on that day and even if used there would be lucky to be 1k there. They will get the grounds in the next year or two IMO. And I dont see how it butchers the start of the season but we all see things diffferently. i take you dont want players to have 2 byes?

I think that having two byes would be a good reason to add a week to the season if it was beneficial to the players health & well being. But I don't think adding a week of only 2 matches for the sake of pissing off another code is a very good reason, actually looks childish & unprofessional IMO, but I get what they are ultimately trying to achieve.

I have no issues with no Footy on Good Friday.

Funny you should mention that Noob… The entire season starts the week before Good Friday this year because the AFL believe so strongly about not playing football on a holy day except… wait for it… they are not willing to forgo the revenue of a single Friday night match, so instead of just having Good Friday off, we have the entire season extended by a week & a split first round. But we don't have time for the players to get two byes a year, no way, the season just goes for too long

If someone elses religious beliefs are important enough to stop the rest of enjoying what we normally do on a Friday night, then the AFL should have the courtesy of missing out on one single Friday night games revenue, instead of completely stuffing up the beginning of a season with an absurd split/bye round one.

I respect that people have faiths and beliefs that mean sport on certain days is not kosher, but should everyone else have to follow the same ideals? We never used to play football on a Sunday either, times change, devout followers should be free to boycott any matches that fall on their said holy days, but I don't believe everyone else should have to adhere.

What a pointless comparison! There are an increasing number of industries that have to work on GF. You can catch public transport, watch a movie at the cinema, watch rugby and soccer, place a bet, buy overpriced groceries (at 7-11) and fill up your car just to name a few.
AFL Players play on Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, ANZAC Day and Queen's Birthday. They also play on Mother's Day and Father's Day. But they only play for six months of the year doing a job they would probably do for far less money. I think they have it pretty good.

I get that day (and all the other public holidays) off because I work 5 days a week, 52 weeks of the year.
