The reason why members don't get free entry into NAB Cup

Post: # 1303404Post Life Long Saint »

After a few days of chasing down answers, I have found out why members don't get free access to NAB cup games.

Of the $17 General admission price, the St Kilda Football Club receives zero dollars.
So if the footy club were to offer members free entry then they have to pay the AFL $17 per member that attended.

Not only does the AFL provide a meaningless competition and try to pass it off as relevant, they screw the clubs over on admission. Meaning that grounds like Etihad and Footy Park have no atmosphere during these games.

They should drop the admission price to $5 for adults and free for kids and encourage people to go and provide a bit of atmosphere at the game which will only enhance the coverage and interest level in the competition.

agreed
even ten bucks each and kids under 15 free

$22 bucks to get in as a member is a joke really
especially seeing as it costs $6 more for a reg game during the season for us

Don't forget that if you want to park at Etihad, you pay more for the parking than the actual event!!

Doesn't seem very smart…

You'd think they are missing a pretty good PR opportunity, I imagine if tickets were super cheap, the stands would be pretty full and they could make their money on $9 pies & $7 cokes.

The NAB cup's days are numbered, another couple of real games and one or two more byes for the year would be better. Teams will just have to manage and rest their stars more.

So the Swans paid $17 for each of their members who went to the game on Sunday, because entry was included as part of their membership????

Like hell......this would be another "marketing expense" for Adolf and his band of merry men.

I know I say it every year, but I'm just about done with the AFL at the moment. Dimwit is no different to Julia or Tony, the main difference being every couple of years we, the people, vote Julia or Tony in or out based on our own choice of policy and beliefs, where we're just stuck with the corrupt, double dealing, shite talking spin machine that is the AFL Commission.

I've always thought entry should be gold coin donation for a charity.

Guys, I've reported you all to the AFL and you'll all be locked up in a cage and beaten until You understand the real reason!

Pricing is an inexact science. Drop the admission price to $5 and they have to get more than three times as many people for the same amount of revenue. Would the Saints v Swans game on the weekend have ever got 20k attending? I don't know, and neither do the AFL, but I guess they need to pay for the stadium hire somehow.

And enhancing the "interest level" in the competition is highly unlikely. Certainly at my work, only the hardcore footy nuts care about the pre-season comp, while 90% of the footy fans are just ignoring it. I don't see how lower prices would change that very much.

In the old days (pre mid 90s) i'm pretty sure it was free to members for the first couple of weeks then about half price.
So I went.

Now I refuse to pay full price for a modified game with supergoals and experimental stupid rules.
Make it $5 and I would go.

Melbourne are holding their family day on Saturday prior to the game...I wonder if that will help the crowd figures?

I always preferred the old elimination style of the pre-season comp. If you were knocked out early, you could go and watch your team at Princes Park or some other local venue...and entry was free for members.

So you are whinging about paying to much to a meaningless competition. If it is meaningless why would making it cheaper mean more of a crowd and as Bergholt said dropping it $5 doesnt mean they will get 3 or 4 times the crowd. I get in for nothing because i am an AFL member but still didnt go on Sunday.

Having said that I think club members should get one free game but not all of them.

The bigger joke was , level two which was $25 .
Hardly anyone was up there and by the last quarter most were sitting right at the back because the sun was in there eyes !

I also laughed when they had the security details for the coaches .

I never realised 6500 saints and swans fans at 5.30 on a sunday afternoon were such a risk !

I am not whinging about paying too much. I have posted about why members don't get free matches and how it relates to our club's bottom line.

I also stated that by dropping the price it would encourage more people to go. I don't reckon that 6,500 people at Etihad would cover the cost of venue hire and catering now but more people would add to the atmosphere and make for a better viewing product.

Park just over the river (via that silly arty twisty footbridge) and over the freeway.
It's a good 10 min walk to Jihad from there.

But it is FREEEEEEEE

It is around that strange nightclub (not sure if it still runs) - I think it is called NeverLand?

The NAB Cup.

A product put on before the real season just so supporters have something to whinge about.

If its meaningless, then don't go.

The clubs prefer the current system as they know for all bar the final round where they are playing.
