Lockett's move to Sydney was financed by the AFL
I knew Sydney had the cost of living allowance that gave it the leeway to attract marquee players but I didn't realise that the AFL actually paid for entrenching players into the expansion teams back then, i.e.
"AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou yesterday confirmed a precedent existed where an AFL player - Tony Lockett - was paid by the league as an ambassador in an expansion market.
Lockett joined Sydney from St Kilda in 1995."
from http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/ ... 6590341250
Was that common knowledge?

Re: Lockett's move to Sydney was financed by the AFL
Collingwood say it was a done deal him moving to vic park , so the only thing that got him to sydney was allot of money !
how much ? unless he says we'll probably never know .
Since the failure of sydney's private owners , the afl were bankrolling them from the late eighties. ( and probably still are )

Re: Lockett's move to Sydney was financed by the AFL
No surprises that the AFL paid PLuggers way up there.
And I really have to say that the Tippet move to Sydney doesn't sit right with me.
The tit for tat school boy crap between Colless et al is also a nonsense.
But the team who wins the GF shouldnt be able to to go and recruit the 3rd of 4th highest player in the land the following year. Tippet is definitely worth the equivalent of a number 1 draft pick to the Swans. It just seems profoundly unfair on the surface of it. I could have swallowed it if they had to trade their first round pick plus a semi decent player. On the other had the crows didn't deserve a fair deal from the trade given their shenanigans. So maybe you could argue the swans just benefited from the crows malfeasance.
Just seems like a case of 2 wrongs dont make a right. Sure the crows stuffed up - but that shouldnt mean a windfall to the swans either.

Re: Lockett's move to Sydney was financed by the AFL
Makes sense... Though I can't imagine him wanting to be at Collingwood, he really rejected the spotlight.
The AFL have done many things to ensure that Sydney be 'succsessful'. Even when AD was bemoaning their boring game style, I'm sure the main concern was that locals wouldn't embrace such a horrendous spectacle.
• Cost of living allowance
• Barry Hall playing the GF
• Kieren Jack being drafted without actually registering for the draft
• Kurt Tippett getting there without giving up a single draft pick - how convenient.
I'm sure there are many more, they need expansion to work & are clearly willing to bend their own rules when needed.
What about Jaeger O'Meara to Gold Coast, the whole point of the pre-listing teens idea was to get decent mature players into the expansion clubs via trades for these young guns. Instead we have a team fresh from 12 or so first round draft picks getting their hands on essentially a pre-draft priority pick. If we are excited about Newnes & Wright, wait till we see this guy go round.

The AFL is a corrupt joke. Today The Hun reports that Cloke has signed a five year deal with Channel 9. What a efing joke.

With Channel Eddie? Any chance this will need to go under the salary cap?CURLY wrote:The AFL is a corrupt joke. Today The Hun reports that Cloke has signed a five year deal with Channel 9.
It seems sort of similar to the Judd/Visy deal

Oh no has nothing to do with Eddie according to David. Channel 9 sought him out because he is so media savvy.

Funny how things turn around.
A year ago he was the subject of a lot of speculation and linked to several clubs who would have paid him more than Collingwood.
Now he is staying and has a highly-paid second job with Channel Eddie.

Yeah and what are the chances that his five year contract with Collingwood is the exact time frame as his channel 9 one? Yeah players dont leave Collingwood because of the culture yeah thats it Ed isnt it?

The AFL also paid for Ron "Lockett should be in jail" Barassi to be in Sydney.
Plugger even did special comments for Channel 7 for a couple of weeks to help justify paying him outside of the salary cap. But his comments were too 'special' and they let him off.
As always great to know that the governing body - empowered by the clubs - works harder for some clubs than others.

Re: Lockett's move to Sydney was financed by the AFL
The tone for officially sanctioned rorting and "protected species" status at Sydney was set right from the start.
You can go back to the early 80s when the AFL sent Schwaby Snr (Alan Schwab) up there at our expense to "assist" the Swans starting up operations, marketing, general football advice etc.
Schwaby was Camerons father and famous as a power-broker at Richmond though earlier he was also involved at StKilda during our premiership.
We (the VFL = the Melbourne Clubs) not only paid for the huge marketing expenses but also Schwaby's salary and we also picked up the tab for his prostitutes and drugs - and presumably his funeral expenses from the overdose.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Hilarious, they might not actively pay Franklin to go up there, but by giving them a $2,000,000 salary cap advantage they will be in the box seat, & GWS are currently asking for more salary cap space

The whole damn competition is a mess with an integrity/credibility gap that grows wider by the day. Needs a Kennett-type to come in and fix itdragit wrote:http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/w ... 2fhsz.html

I did not know about this... If true, which it obviously is, it is completely indefensible cheating to favor a side at the expense of another... Clear evidence that the AFL's agenda will lead it to break it's own rules for what THEY consider the greater good... And in doing so, destroy the fabric that binds the game together...

You act surprised. These sorts of things have been going on for years, particularly under Demetriou. His time at the top is coming to an end IMOSobraz wrote:I did not know about this... Do we know if Joey or Rooy have deals with channel 7 and dal with 9? They knocked back Judd and Selwood but not Cloke but i suppose Carlton arent a pwerful club unless its suits us when discussing something. And do we know the amount cloke is getting? Could be 20k or 100k but who knows. But they just want to look afer the Pies and now it is GWS and GC. I suppose thats why Tippett got to GWS. The AFL made sure of it.

Does Cloke grab you as the type of media 'personality' to warrant a 5 year deal???
Wouldnt imagine Monty, Dal or Roo are tied up in their current contracts until their mid 30's?!

No he doesnt. Not at all. Have no idea on the others contracts. What is Eddie role at channel 9? i thought he hosted Hot Seat.
