Did you ever get annoyed with how long Lloyd took to get for goal as it seems most opposition fans did. Well the Saints ones did anyway.

And what are the other ways to satify commercial interests? Im sure free to air TV would like to hear about them and still pay the same money.
How many of the five Foxtel exclusive games are shown live on Free to Air each week? Because it's only live games that matter here.

On the Lloyd situation...Yes it did annoy me because he was wasting time. Stop the clock and I have nothing to complain about.

Other ways to satisfy commercial interests is to have "sponsored" replays or a "sponsored" scoreboard. It's hardly revolutionary. The radio stations (except for the ABC) have been doing it for decades...and they go OK.
You could super impose a few more graphics on the playing surface like Foxtel are doing with the scores and stats. It only takes a little bit of imagination.
I'm pretty sure that companies would be lining up to get a piece of that action.

Stop the clock and it's a non-issue.
Still an issue as the more you stop the clock the longer the game goes in real time!
And that is a problem because....?

Why does that matter? Do you have somewhere else to be? Can't you spare five more minutes?

Start the game at 2:00 instead of 2:10 and start the TV coverage earlier.
You don't see cricket games starting 10 past the hour to allow the TV coverage to rabbit on for 10 mins. The TV coverage starts earlier to coincide with the start of the cricket game.

Yep and that will replace about 30 ads a game. i dont think so or they would have done it. They do like making money especially when they have paid so much. I would think 3 or 4 games are live elsewhere on free to air. It could actually be all 5. And Lloyd wasnt be booed for wasting time, it was for taking to long. He would do it any time of the game if they 100 points up or down and he would still get booed. If you notice Saad starts to get booed now when he has a shot for goal. It wouldnt change if the clock stopped. Pretty sure most people at the footy dont think like that.

Cricket used to start at 11am. Now starts at 10.30 because of TV. Sorry but TV pays for these sports and has a huge say.

Lloyd got booed because he was Lloyd...And he threw the grass into the air in an indoor stadium. Not because he took too long.
Nathan Buckley used to get booed too...even when he wasn't having a shot at goal!

And since when does the AFL care what fans like when it comes to making rule changes? If they did care they'd stop making changes.

The Foxtel games that would be shown live on free to air interstate would only be those that involve the local club in a Foxtel only game...Can't see that being 3-4 a week. Certainly wouldn't be all 5.

That is so not true.
Cricket starts at 10:30 because the teams today can't bowl 90 overs in six hours. So rather than complicate matters with failing light late in the day, they choose to start earlier and play the extra half-hour when the light is better.

And the AFL havent made this rule change because of the fans. I reckon it was made because they dont want players resting just like the kick in rule. Surely you dont like the packs around the ball. I actually think the 3 and 1 on the interchange opened up the game a fraction more last year and hopefully the 80 interchnges next year will do even more.

Please dont lie to yourself. It starts earlier because the game usually goes to 6pm now and if it went to 6.30 the TV stations would have to make a decision about showing the news or the cricket. I am 100% sure about that.

Channel Nine have shown over the years that they will happily cut the cricket short (unless there's something big about to happen) to go to the news.
But Nine doesn't have to worry now as they show the news on the main channel and the cricket on Gem.
Happened many times this summer.

It starts earlier because of over rates and light. No lie.

They couldnt use Gem till this year. I have no doubt it starts early because of the TV so they dont have to miss out on half an hours play. Why wouldnt Perth start earlier. They dont have day light savings.

You've just contradicted yourself.
They do have Gem and if they still run overtime, they don't miss out on putting the cricket on TV.
So, if it can be shown on FTA TV after 6:00pm why do we need to start the coverage earlier?

Perth is a very westerly town compared to the time zone. It gets darker later in Perth...The opposite happens on the East Coast...for example, it gets darker earlier in Brisbane than it does in Melbourne (even when Melbourne ins't on Day Light Savings Time).

I've heard Grant Thomas is going to provide Ahmed with a specialized indoor training facility so that he can work on a shortened run up..

Plugger66 has taken his AFL apologist pills again and gone way off tack.
As I recall this was a discussion about Ahmed Saad getting the hurry on re his kicking for goals and as someone rightly pointed out it leaves the ok for Buddy to go off the line and not get pinged.

But I think that was thread number 2 before the whole discussion got shanghied AGAIN!

I suppose if some people dont rate your opinions then they read what they want to read. I didnt initially take it off track but dont lets the facts get in the way of some bulls***. Anyway I think LLS and myself were having a reasonable discussion with no personal insults and then what happens you come along and make a personal insult. Thats the thing. Some posters can completely disagree as LLS does with me but he didnt have to have go at me because he is arguing like a grown adult.

The topic is Saad ordered to speed up. If it wasnt taken off track it would be about a 4 post thread.

Guys, c'mon the AFL is right!!!

They always are....

The tribunal, umpiring, drug policy all seamless operations....

Very fair and consistent competition... Just ask anyone from one of the 'big 4' clubs

On lloyd he was a tool but a good damaging player so wouldn't have mattered what he did everyone would have booed just like they do to Rooey and Milne.

The theatre of footy is what breeds passion for the game not sterile sameness.

The AFL seems set on homogenising our game and then trying to make it less and less unique. they are obsessed with being like every other code IMO. I loved to hate Lloyd and Buckley and Hall.

If we take the quirks out I might as well just play it on the X box. Saads quirky style adds to the game and doesn't do anything to distract from it.

Bloody AFL..Saad is lining up to kick goals, not running around in circles for 10 mins. Who are the other players the AFL is concerned about with this issue? Must be Collingwood or Sydney players as their names have been kept out of the media

He rarely misses a set shot with his "slow" technique, I really enjoyed watching him kicking for goal.

Serious? I love him, but Saad obviously takes the longest of any player in the league. Can you name any player from another club - including Matty Lloyd - who's ever taken as long as him for a set shot?

I didn't say that I booed Lloyd...I said that he was booed because he was Lloyd. I said that I didn't like him taking too long because, with the clock running, he is time wasting.

I read today that the umpires have been instructed to blow the whistle more frequently to call for a ball up and reducing congestion around the contest. This will do more than any other rule change to reduce packs around the ball.
Wow! What radical thinking. Actually make it look more like football than rugby.
