Go West
Is the West the best? Now that is going to be an interesting question yet to be answered as we power into season 2013.
There is both a perceived and real St Kilda recruiting bias towards Sandgropers.
The obvious reason for that is because the coach is one himself.
But so far we have recruited Beau Wilkes, Tom Lee, Trent Dennis Lane and now Dylan Roberton is training with the Saints and looking to find a new AFL home. We almost got Mitch Brown but he might not count.
You don't have to be a genius to figure that we are looking to pick up Roberton at some point.
So my question: is this a recruiting master stroke or something much less? Are we turning into WA inc
Wilkes went alright in 2012 without setting the world on fire. Fremantle supporters seem to rate Roberton ok, his stats are good and he's a defender which is what we need.
TDL played a few good games for the Swanees but seems to have been selected on his unfulfilled potential.
Lee has been given another crack at the AFL after a dismal flop with Adelaide.
Not trying to sound like a negative nellie just a small reality check. Of course, if all of these guys fire then I will be first to be hailing Scott Watters as a football genius who walks on water.
And while on all matters West there is a pretty green kid called Marco Paparone who would be a steal for us if he slides in the draft. Needs to improve on his skills but I think he definitely has potential in a St Kilda jumper.

Re: Go West
Why should anyone care about how many WA ppl are at St.Kilda. As long as they do their job and help us up the ladder that's all I care. If Watters wants to stack the team with Middle Eastern fundamentalists who can play footy or who are good coaches then so be it.

And in yet another Saintsational first, I can now announce big, big breaking news... and the news is very, very good.
Our new proactive Football Department under the leadership of Cuddles and The Pelican already have the wheels rolling.
Experienced fundamenatalist talent spotters have been secretly appointed by the club.
After consultancy input from Saintsational's very own True Believer, a no nonsense list management policy is in place. No more of the 'peace love and mung beans', 'fluffy cloud hugging', Type 1 errors with list cloggers.
Talent has already been spotted, and they have already completed their Arizona pre-season altitude training camp.
Three home games a season at the recently revamped Kabul International Sports Stadium, starting next season.
BJ, Ballsup and Ro$$y are going to regret leaving the Saints...,
I'm really looking forward to us killing the competition next season.
Exciting times.
The talent spotting team.
Finally getting real with list management.
Arizona altitude training 6 weeks ago.
Every club mouths out weasel words about 'anywhere, anytime'..., we'll show those wimps what real 'anywhere anytime' means. But don't be fooled, this stadium is state of the art... all the landmines have already been stepped on.

Re: Go West
A large number of our wa contingent were recruited in the lyon years.
Peake and cripps have already been sent back over the nullabor.
In the old days there was too much focus on the tac comp.
Now maybe the pendulum has swung back a bit.
Maybe we need to look more at Sth Aus. Chips and Rhys need some more mates im thinking.

Re: Go West
If I moved to WA all my contacts in business would be from Vic. If he has strong opinions on the guys he been associated with in the past and backs them good on him. He is not taking the easy option and taking the guys the board selects for him. It creates a strong network and will give him access that teams in WA have previously been privy to. So far he hasn't made any howlers as a coach and guys like Lee were on the radar outside of Perth. Dennis Lane was an emergency in the GF so is obviously capable, his support staff all come with great resumes and the contacts he has in WA have obviously given him a heads up about the form of others.

Re: Go West
I'm from WA and I remember the decisions Freo made when they were being set up. They employed Gerard Neesham who was a local coach who in turn recruited a lot of his old cronies who had played at Claremont. This in-house home state mentality set the Dockers back many years as they ignored potential champions like Andrew Mcleod who they had on a plate but chose to overlook.gringo wrote:If I moved to WA all my contacts in business would be from Vic. If we are just recruiting people who we have had contact with in the past and ignoring any potential champs outside that circle then we are doing ourselves a huge disservice. I like the selection of Tom Lee who dominated in the WAFL last year and incidentally carved up Mitch Brown in one game. Simon McPhee will be good for the young blokes as he turned around Claremont's fortunes in a short time. We want to tread carefully in being obsessed with WA players and coaching staff, but the proof will be in our performances in the next 2 years. I follow the WAFL fairly closely and like to see the WA boys succeed, but am slightly wary about the WA obsession that is being exercised at the Saints at the minute.

Re: Go West
I am in a position of having to employ people.
If there is a suitably qualified candidate, he/she gets the job no ifs or buts.
If however no standout candidate applies you are forced to go to a speculative pick.
I would much prefer a speculative pick from a background I know a bit about rather than a total unknown,

Re: Go West
Good post, I don't mind some inside knowledge helping guide recruiting. But... we need nearly everything but a small forward, so trading for the hyphen seems like a mistake. He will need to be a lot better than average to be considered a good trade as we ready have 4 excellent small forwards. Hope I am proven wrong on this.busso mick wrote:I'm from WA and I remember the decisions Freo made when they were being set up. Re: Go West
Both players chosen as the 17yr olds this year came from W.A., and O'Meara did last year who would have been in this years draft. But this years crop from W.A. are not as good as those in the other states, hence W.A.'s poor performance this year. We should definitely be looking to S.A. and Victoria this year.

(Go West) Life is peaceful there
(Go West) In the open air
(Go West) Baby you and me
(Go West) This is our destiny (Aah)
(Go West) Sun in wintertime
(Go West) We will do just fine
(Go West) Where the skies are blue
(Go West) this is what we're gonna do
There where the air is free
We'll be (We'll be) what we want to be (Aah aah aah aah)
Now if we make a stand (Aah)
We'll find (We'll find) our promised land (Aah)
(I know that) There are many ways
(To live there) In the sun or shade
(Together) We will find a place
(To settle) Where there's so much space
(Without rush) And the pace back east
(The hustling) Rustling just to feed
(I know I'm) Ready to leave too
(So that's what) We are gonna do
(What we're gonna do is

ive given up trying to explain it to muppetts that its a case of the best people for the role not WA people ... if you look at all the WA people at our club in coaching spots with the exception of Jayme Graham all of them were persued by other clubs as for the WA players like Lee and TDL well Lee would have gone top ten in my opinion yesterday and TDL was an emergancy for the g/f this year so is an upgrade on Polo or Peake who barely played a game .. but hey it wouldnt be SS if there wasnnt a conspiricy
