Possibility of losing Riewoldt to FA
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/ ... fault.aspx
This article is about Fremantle and their potential play for a gun forward (focusing on Buddy) by offering up to $1.5 for the 2014 season. There is, however, speculation by the author that if that fails, they could target Riewoldt.
Now, there's no saying they will, and this seems very unlikely. There is always a possibility, however, that if Freo think that they're best chance for a premiership is 2013 and they can't get their hands on Franklin, they may make a play for someone like Riewoldt. And considering our new team policy of player payments, that could be up to two and a half times more than he could earn staying here.
A long way off, and a lot of ifs, but some food for thought.

Wouldn't go.
IF he did not a massive loss by the end of next year.

Re: Possibility of losing Riewoldt to FA
Nick would be 31 at the start of 2013, with a history of knee problems and with a lack of reliability in front of goals.
While the thought of obtaining such a player without having to give up players or draft picks is no doubt appealing, I doubt Freo would want to make him a ridiculous offer; one that we would not be prepared to match.
Of course I could be wrong, but I just don’t see it happening.

If he goes, so be it. Riewoldt is at the end of his career.

No chance - long term club Captain. Was very well looked after by Saints over his career. Degenerative knees. I think Nick will be just hoping his body survives 2013.

Re: Possibility of losing Riewoldt to FA
A switch just wouldn't make sense for either party. Rooey is still capable, but past his best and probably only has two more seasons in him. It would be ridiculous for Freo to throw huge money at a 31 year old forward with a chronic knee injury and it wouldn't make much sense on Riewoldt's behalf; he has probably made more money off footy over the past 12 years than anyone else in the competition and there's a lucrative future in media/coaching if he wants it. Money wouldn't be an issue for him, and ditching the club he has captained for so many years for a few extra dollars would hurt his reputation in a big way, not to mention the relationships with all the mates he has in Melbourne.

Doubt he would ever leave now, doubt he would ever leave to Perth.

Seriously, even if he left, it wouldn't be a massive loss. I think Riewoldt may only have a couple of years of footy left in him.

We should now have the cash. I reckon next trade period could be interesting. But does anyone want to come.vacuous space wrote:Why wouldn't we be chasing Franklin?

If we are going to stay true to our player payment policy then we are not going to offer anyone more than 600k a year, means its unlikely we would be targeting players based on money!8856brother wrote:We should now have the cash. Re: Possibility of losing Riewoldt to FA
If Pelchen has a 'no signing awesome players to >1/20th of the cap' policy, then I'd happily see him fired.rexy wrote:If we are going to stay true to our player payment policy then we are not going to offer anyone more than 600k a year, means its unlikely we would be targeting players based on money!

Re: Possibility of losing Riewoldt to FA
Not saying its right, just thought we were making a statement with the Goddard thing that we would not be paying over a certain amount for any one player, almost like an individual cap? If this is true and we believe this is the best way to build a good side then I don't see us throwing around the kind of cash it would take to get a Franklin.vacuous space wrote:If Pelchen has a 'no signing awesome players to >1/20th of the cap' policy, then I'd happily see him fired.rexy wrote:If we are going to stay true to our player payment policy then we are not going to offer anyone more than 600k a year, means its unlikely we would be targeting players based on money!

Re: Possibility of losing Riewoldt to FA
We shouldn't be jumping at shadows just because we lost out on the Goddard free agency thing.
Instead this thread should be talking about not who we might lose but who we will get. Why can't we get Buddy?? We have the cash?
