Re: Draft strategy
isnt there a rule you have to use 3 draft picks?
we have already cut BJ/Polo/Cripps/Peake/Crocker and added 3 (Hickey/Lee/TDL).
So we wold need 6 spots available.... I think we have 36 on our list at present (including Dunell).
So we have space for a net gain of 2. So I guess that means maybe we go:
kid
kid
Hartigan or Noonan
pass
That means + 3 to list. Delist raph. And keep curren and ferg as rookies?
(i would have let blake and cj go and promoted curren and ferg in their place but maybe that can wait a bit...)

Re: Draft strategy
We will draft 4. Ferguson stays rookie one mOre year as he is not counted. At least One of the 40 picks on hartigan and/or Tighe or both. 25/26 on best avail. Remember hartigan and tighe were highly rated youngsters expected to be drafted . Both Only 20. Both have grown and shown they are good at vfl level which Is good for developing KPDs at that age

i want one of hartigan or noonan. best available is great in a text book (perfect foresight and perfect information) but in reality it is so random and uncertain once you get over pick 20 or 30 that 'ba' becomes a completely meaningless ideal.
therefore i prefer my targeted approach with our late pick (hartigan, noonan)

Re: Draft strategy
Dont forget we also have to prune our rookie list to four at the same time, and we have de-listed Archer (rookie) so three more to go.
We have to make spaces on either our senior list or our rookie, probably on both, so we will have to delist more than one, probably three, from our Senior List. Ideas anyone?

Re: Draft strategy
How can you have a late pick...Dimwit and Co. only give each club a fixed amount of time to make their choice, otherwise it's veto
Will we pick up a player in the SSP window

Re: Draft strategy
Still say use 41 and 46 on 2 of Hartigan, Tighe, Noonan..... why not? All young, all have 10 years ahead of them. If 1 ends up a KPD, you have a KDP for 2 picks in the 40s.... nothing wrong with that.... maybe you get 2! The odds of using the 2 40s picks on younger guys is lower... less than 50%..... Look long aand hard at all their games this year, and pick at least one of them... and maybe rookie of draft another.... and let them battle it out for FB
25/26 should get us 2 players with good chances of making it... you would hope at least one becomes a good AFL player

Re: Draft strategy
I'd rather lead Ferguson and the rookies on the rookie list if they still can be kept on it rather than using a spot up on the senior list. I'm sure if they are tearing it up in the VFL next year we will probably have a LTI and be able to upgrade them.

Re: Draft strategy
Probably means they will be just about the only Sandy regulars not from our list, plus Dowler. Makes sense to have them do pre season with us since it is effectively the St Kilda reserves now.evo wrote:Cook, Cockie, Sikora, Coleman and Michaliades have been invited to pre season training. Re: Draft strategy
Ok, I'd prefer to pick the best junior FB and just develop a strategy for how to cope instead of getting an average state league defender who is only ever going to be average.
Anyone know whats happening with Tippett and Crows now? Would love for Crows to lose their first rounder and for Sydney to have to take Tippett with their first rounder. That would effectively give us pick 22 & 23 in the draft.

Re: Draft strategy
With 24 and 25, we have the chance to grab two fairly highly rated players.
The top 30 are probably as follows:
Broomhead
Clurey
Colquhoun
Garlett
Garner
Graham
Grundy
Haynes
Hrovat
Jaksch
Kennedy
Lonergan
Macrae
Mayes
Membrey
Menzel
O’Rourke
Plowman
Pongracic
Shaw
Simpson
Smith
Stringer
Toumpas
Vlastuin
Whitfield
Wines
Wright
With Daniher and Viney, both clear top 10 selections, already taken.
Now, we can probably assume that none of Whitfield, Toumpas, Grundy, Mayes, O'Rourke, Macrae, Plowman and Wines will be available. The rest are all (somewhat) possibilities to be around at our first two picks.
Given that we could use a quality young defender, I think we'll take at least one with our first two selections if a suitable player is available. My preference would be Clurey, followed by Jaksch, followed by Smith. If one of those three are available, I wouldn't be surprised if we took them. Clurey and Jaksch are unlikely, they'll probably both go in the teens. Smith is a very good chance to still be there, though not certain. He's a good shutdown defender, 194cm. Good spoil, good intercept mark, not much of a rebounder. Probably a good fit.
I'd say we'll also go for the best available midfielder given that the KP stocks in this draft aren't prolific. Personally, I'm a Nick Graham fan. However, any of the mids listed above would probably be a good selection. There's quite a good range of them. Obviously, lots of them will be gone by our picks, but I'm fairly confident we'll still be able to snag a good one.
After our first two picks, it gets a lot harder to judge which players we'll be looking at. This draft is said to drop off very very quickly after 20-30 picks. I'm not an avid follower of 18s, so I'm not going to speculate beyond our first two selections.
I'd like to point out that a lot of my knowledge of this year's draft crop has been developed from reading other people's views and opinions because I've only seen a handful of games myself. No doubt there are some posters on here with a much better understanding than me, but hopefully this gets some of the names out there for people who aren't aware, and they can start to have a look at who we might end up with.
My dream result would be;
25- Garner
26- Clurey
Realistic result;
25- Graham / Colquhoun
26 - Smith

Re: Draft strategy
We are going to recruit a very good player at either 41 or 44. I am glad he is not in the so called top 30 above. Will be a better player than who we select at 25/26. There is only one other club onto him.

Re: Draft strategy
I agree re: your delistings... At least we have some room to eat the cost of the contracts of Winmar & Jonesy... If the rookie list wasn't being cut back then dropping Winmar back to the RL would at least minimise the lost $. I'd like to be able to draft 4 kids & possibly upgrade Dunell with pick 70 odd.defacto wrote:2 words adam cockie. make it happen saints!!!!

As with many others I'm hoping that Clurey is one of the tall kids that slides & is available at 24.
James Stewart is an interesting one, 197cm rake thin but excellent disposal & ground level skills. Struggled at times as a forward but when he played key defence looked really good. The filth could have taken him as father son but decided against it. Could be a nice development project at pick 44.
My dream draft-
12- Tom Lee (195cm fwd)
13- Tom Hickey (201cm ruck)
25- Tom Clurey (194cm def)
26- Josh Simpson (183cm mid)
41- Matthew Haynes (189cm mid/fwd)
44- James Stewart (197cm fwd)
77- Tom Gillies (192cm def) or rookie list
95- Sam Dunell (rookie upgrade)
I can't see Menzel or Garlett getting through to our picks but if they do we should snap either up.

I think I would replace Gillies with a larger proven Full Back like Joel TIPPETT or Kyal HARTIGAN and at #44 I would consider Harley WALSHE (197cm) full back who beat all the best forwards in the TAC this year. Stewart is very light and is a similiar type to Lever I dont think we need two long term options like those two.

Re: Draft strategy
If all of Plowman, Clurey and Tanner Smith are gone before our first pick, I would use 24 & 25 on best available players, and with 40 & 43, pick up a VFL fullback, plus Harley Walshe or another youngster to develop.
