Ben Jacobs Back In Play
OK now the trade period is over.
Jacobs remains out of cotract.
His manager is our favourite enemy, Connors
North Melbourne wanted Jacobs but did not have the picks to buy him from Port Adelaide.
He was pick 16 in the compromised 2010 national draft which probably values him at pick 21 for a normal draft.
North would not give up pick 15 and Port were not going to accept pick 38.
Port refused to accept a reaming but now risk getting nothing, just like what happened to St Kilda over Luke Ball.
Almost certainly Jacobs is not going to re-sign with Port, he wants out of that cess pit and back to Victoria.
He can go into the national draft, but then he would need to survive until North pick him.
North has picks 15, 38 and 42.
North are not going to use pick 15 otherwise he would already be at North.
He would need to survive to pick 38.
Unlike Luke Ball who was adamant it was Collingwood and nobody else, Jacobs just wants to get back to the Victorian capital.
If he were to be taken by a Victorian club before pick 38 he would definitely not be prepared to stand out of football for a year to get to North.
He simply wants to play football in a team that wins occassionally.
If St Kilda were to show interest in Jacobs, North would be forced to use pick 38 because St Kilda has picks 41 and 44.
But that assumes he survives through to pick 38.
The alternative is to avoid the national draft and only nominate for the pre-season draft.
Teams rarely hold back picks and salary for the preseason draft unless they have a player already in mind.
North would more likely be encouraging Connors & Jacobs to go for the pre season draft only.
But here is the rub, St Kilda is ahead of North in the pre-season draft.
If St Kilda had the cash left in their salary cap they could match the North arrangement and take him ahead of North.
Jacobs family lives in Beaumaris.
He is a former Brighton Grammar School boy.
He played for the Sandringham Dragons.
Like every professional footballer he likes playing the game and the money.
This all means Jacobs is back in play if St Kilda seriously wants him and we could probably take him for nothing but salary.
All it would take is to show some interest and he could be persuaded to be a Saint and not a Kangaroo.
St Kilda needs to start talking to Jacobs and his family.

We could take him in the pre-season draft and still have pick 26, so long as he only nominates for the pre season draft.Burkey 1 wrote:Agree, we could take him with pick 26 if things are looking thin by then ??

Yep. Good idea. However, if we really want him and could persuade him to come to us then we could consider using 25/26 on him.

Don't we have 25, 26, 41 & 44?
That would be great though!

Re: Ben Jacobs Back In Play
well, seems he is definitely in the ND... a win-win for us....
If he goes before 25, we have effectivley moved up a spot wrt where we were at previously.
If he makes it to 25/26, we can assess if he is better than the other options available....
If we dont take him, the very latest he will go is 38 to North (doubt he will go that late)... but this still moves up our selections 41 + 44 by one place
I hope Tippett goes ND as well, but I imagine that he will not

Re: Ben Jacobs Back In Play
It would have been handy to still have pick 37 right about now! Could have had either Broughton or trump Norths second pick for Jacobs.
If he is considered better than what is around @ pick 26 then I'm ok with it. I still have concerns with his lack of intensity, second efforts and attitude... but he is just a kid still so if we were keen I'm sure we know what we are doing...

Rather just get the best kid available, not sold on Jacobs being what we need.

Re: Ben Jacobs Back In Play
i have a feeling this draft is going to be very strange in the way that pick 25 is going to be alot more valuble than it would in previous years ... especially if the Dee's and Crows lose their picks and with GWS owning the first round we could see a very very good young player slipping to our pick at 25 ... honestly this years draft has got me the most interested since before the compromised draft came in

Re: Ben Jacobs Back In Play
Ditto. Did u get a chance to see any of the WA kids this year? I wouldn't get Jacobs if say Cloquhous (I'll never get it right) is around but if everyone we rate is gone then I could handle getting Jacobs as a replacement for Gram. Newnes and Jacobs can play in the same team and another 20 year old is potentially great for our structure moving forward. Does anyone think he would be there at pick 41 meaning North pass with their 38?st_Trav_ofWA wrote:i have a feeling this draft is going to be very strange in the way that pick 25 is going to be alot more valuble than it would in previous years ... especially if the Dee's and Crows lose their picks and with GWS owning the first round we could see a very very good young player slipping to our pick at 25 ... honestly this years draft has got me the most interested since before the compromised draft came in

Re: Ben Jacobs Back In Play
North has picks 38, 42 and 48.
It may seem only a small slip between 38 to 42 but St Kilda has picks 41 and 44.
If North are serious about wanting Jacobs they would take him with pick 38, he would be too big a bargain for St Kilda to ignore him at pick 41.
EXCEPT if Jacobs does a Luke Ball and refuses to talk to any other clubs and his agent hangs up on other clubs and refuses to return calls.
Surprise, Jacob's agent just happens to be Paul Connors so this senario is always possible.
If that happens North may risk it but only if there is someone they really like who slips and is still available at 38.
St Kilda has to decide if Jacobs wth 2 years experience is better than the potential of an untried kid at pick 26.
Jacobs comes ready to play in place of Gram whereas a kid still needs to learn.
That could all be decided by which if any tall defenders are still available after pick 25 has been used on the best availalbe tall defender.

Re: Ben Jacobs Back In Play
A lot to consider which is unknown due to other clubs selections and the evenness of the top 30-35. If all of the highly rated young talls are gone by 25, then it means we should take the mids that have dropped to us. Lions, Carlton, GWS and Dogs would all be keen on a KPP I would expect. If we rated say, 5 KPPs in the top 50 and they were all gone I'd be disappointed to pick someone up (@25/26) who we rated around 50 just to fill a need.
The more I think about it I reckon we could have a better chance with a kid at 25/26 & let North have him with 38, if Tigers/Dons don't nab him.
A lot probably hinges on his attitude and his manager too. With salary cap space I wouldn't expect a salary on his head to be an obstacle...
Edit, just realised what his nickname is. Considering who we lost to FA is this an omen?
