Free agency is a joke.
Goddard is worth pick 13 (we assume) under free agency.
Chris Dawes is worth pick 20
Wellingham is worth pick 17.
Maybe we really do need to look at who is coming up to free agency.
Because quite clearly we will get a better deal through trading then we would free agency

Re: Free agency is a joke.
they are doing all right in this trade period the McGuires..
Clearly the best at it this year....turning fools gold into pure gold, however, they do need the cap space to pay for the beasts big contract

Will we pick up a player in the SSP window
Re: Free agency is a joke.
Dawes actually got them more than just pick 20! Agree...the pies are killing it.

Surely the Goddard lesson is enough, don't let your best players get to the stage where they 'test free agency'. Sign them up or move them at your own price.

They have lost a midfield rotation and a key forward and now need to develop the kids they do get. I'm impressed by what they got for Dawes after the year he had but I'm not sure they will be better from the trades at a time they need to improve.
Re: Free agency is a joke.
Real value and what you get for someone are poles apart, whenever a club trades for something they take a risk, Melbourne risk that Dawes 2012 form is his real form, Collingwood that Lynch does a knee in the preseason and never plays a single game for them or that they use pick 20 poorly( or both).
Free agency compensation is risk free, we had no say in it and the AFL have no vested interest, it is a gesture of good will, we had 10 years out of Goddard and that's great return, we were unable to keep him though either our own ineptitude, his greed or a combination of both! At some stage we will be at the other end of free agency and enjoy it!

Re: Free agency is a joke.
No we won't.
If there is anyone that is really worth going after there will be a number of clubs chasing him.
We will not be the most desirable location unless we are paying well over what the Collingwood and Essendon's etc are willing to pay.
We will pick up the occasional free agent but they will be guys like Salopek or Chaplin.
Mid range to good ordinary players who are after a pay packet or a new beginning.
The top liners will rarely if ever go from a big club to a smaller one though the other way will be common place.
The smaller clubs just have get used to getting rodgered silly by the bigger clubs because that is the brave new world we now inhabit.
"Thank you Sir, may I have another."

back to the pre draft ...salary cap days....when only about 4 clubs ever had a chance to win the flag...much like the EPL....SinCitySainter wrote:No we won't.

Well if it was like other FA around the world it would be Wellingham 17 and Dawes 20 and BJ nothing. Not sure what the pies get has to do with FA.

Free Agency is just a glorified delisting really. All the players that have left have had no offer from there original club shows how they where valued at the club.

Except of course for Goddard who was offered an extremely good package by us to stay. However, Essendon came in and gazumped us.CURLY wrote:Free Agency is just a glorified delisting really. Chaplin would not have been delisted by Port nor would Murphy by Hawthorn.

We could have kept Goddard if we really wanted him. I doubt it was a suprise to the Saints the offer Essendon made and I doubt it even more that Goddard would have been shocked StKilda didnt try to match it. Murphy and Chaplin where on the outer and made a hard desision easier for both clubs.

Re: Free agency is a joke.
BJ has maybe 80 games left, whereas Dawes & Wellingham have potentially 150 left each, plus Dawes is a KPP (harder to find). Eagles paid overs for Wellingham though. Typically overrated Collingwood player.
You have to remember we got 200 games from BJ already which is essentially part of our "compensation"

What people are refusing to acknowledge is this draft is extremely shallow. Pick 17 in a shallow draft is neither here or there really.

Re: Free agency is a joke.
Free agency isn't meant to be fair compo. We're lucky we got anything for Goddard. You can't compare that to a trade where both parties are agreeing to a deal.
Re: Free agency is a joke.
So I reckon the compensation announced tonight will be something like this.
Brendon Goddard: first round - pick 13
Jared Rivers: second round - pick 28
Troy Chaplin: second round - pick 31
Clinton Young: second round - pick 45
Danyle Pearce: end of second round - pick 47
Quinten Lynch: end of second round - pick 48
Brent Moloney: third round (diluted by Byrnes) - pick 52
Chris Knights: third round - pick 67
Tom Murphy: third round - pick 69
Shannon Byrnes: nothing (diluted by Rivers)
Which gives us these picks after today:
13, 25, 37, 47, 60, 80, 98
Doesn't look like much there to play with, does it? Especially if the draft is quite shallow after the first 10 or so.

Re: Free agency is a joke.
The BIG losers from this trade period... St Kilda FC! What an absolute farce. We lose a 200+ game player for what... nothing. No defender. No decent forward. Any wonder none of those players on free agency wanted to come to Seaford. After all the hard work of Grant Thomas and Co. to get some pride into the place we are quickly progressing into familiar territory. And for what..? The ego's of a few useless men. Lift your bloody game Saints.

Correct. The trade period is over and we haven't picked up anything....oh wait
As for Grant Thomas - Chriss Judd says hi.
Lance or James??
There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Do you usually measure who has won & lost half way through a race???SoopaSaint wrote:The BIG losers from this trade period... St Kilda FC! What an absolute farce. That statement is a bit like Carlton supporters celebrating a flag in April. Settle down mate, there's a week to go. We didn't want any free agents as it would effect what we will get for BJ. If you're talking about out of contract players then Caddy was actually quite happy to go to Seaford, Geelong just offered him & GC a better deal. Koby Stevens??? pffft, glad we missed the boat there. Mitch Brown WANTS to come. Tom Hickey is on his way. Tom Lee is on his way.
IMO St Kilda has never been in better hands in terms of list management & talent identification.

Big loser: Brendon Goddard's hamstring.SoopaSaint wrote:The BIG losers from this trade period... St Kilda FC!
Big winner: Brendon Goddard's accountant.
We lost our fifth midfielder. We'll get decent compo for him. No biggie.
Yeah nah pleasing positive
