If this is the case, then I hope we hang onto our compo pick from Goddard. We need a solid batch of draftees to add to our next core playing group, and by all reports there are 16-18 very good players available in the draft. Recruiting Hickey is smart, but I really only see him as backup or a contingency in case Stanley doesn't come on.

Would be handy if we could replace that second round pick with a slightly better one in return for Cripps.

Yup, it was 34 before free agency, taking into account all the compensation picks from previous years. This blows out a couple more thanks to the free agents - as it stands we and Port would both get a first round compo pick making it 36. I guess there's a chance Melbourne and Essendon could also end up with first round picks?

Anyway, in the end it will be about 35. I have no idea how good this draft is but I'd reckon that's about fair value for a ruckman a couple of years in to his career. Pick 35s from previous years:

Daniel Markworth, Ben Newton, David Astbury, Jamie Bennell, Sam Reid (the s*** one), Mark Austin, Stephen Owen, Fabian Deluca, Brent Hall, Scott Bassett, Jarrad Wright, Allan Murray

Not a heap of quality there so Hickey doesn't have much to beat if that's the trade. He'd want to end up better than Fabian Deluca!

Clearly Essendon will not get a first round compo pick. They got goddard, so he counts against however they lose.. they will get nothing.
Melbourne will also have Sahnnon Byrne count against whoever they lose... so they will get nothing or little from the Net Free Agency movements

Anyway.. Hickey for round 2 may end up bein a fantastic trade for us... and it means we can now move on from Ruck to other needs on the list.. having not spent too much and having 2 good picks up our sleave

Nah, that's crap. If Melbourne gain Byrnes but lose Rivers and Moloney, they're miles behind on the deal so some compensation has to be justified - probably a second round pick though.

Would think if we are getting him for our second rounder (around 35) and getting Melbourne's second rounder for Farren Ray (26 ?), then we are effectively swapping Ray for Hivkey with with a 10 place upgrade on our second round pick. Shapes up nicely IMO.

Also, if Cripps goes. you would think we would get K Stevens for him and not go after Caddy.
