for the hype that came with the announcement of the player academy we sure have backed it up with a mediocre announcement on who the director will be

this doesnt feel like breaking new ground, instead were revisiting the ground other clubs walked 5 years ago

What an incredibly negative post...what are you basing your pesimism on ?

Micale is considered an outstanding exponent in advancing all-round talents of young players to achieving optimum performance levels with their abilities.

He is also regarded by Watters as an astute tactical analyst in modern playing, development and training trends.
Sounds like exactly what we need. No point having good talented youngsters and not providing them with the best possible chance to develop into the best AFL player they can be.

Well done Saints

Exactly.

After all this time I'm glad we've finally appointed someone. And Tony sounds like a magnificent fit for the position.

Well done Saints and welcome on board TM :)

is he really the best available person for the job? he hasnt been involved at afl level since 2008. his performance has been average at east perth since then. i dont want him in the seat, but gary ayres has more runs on the board in recent times.

i thought one of the reasons we wanted the academy was to address some of the off-field issues with our younger group of players? so why do we appoint a person who was at west coast during 2002-2008. he was sacked when west coast started to address their off field issues. in his own words he got on the wrong side of the people making the decisions at west coast at the time of being sacked.

in recent times an east perth player was nabbed for failing a drug test. andrew lovett was brought in.

were treading old ground here.

Yep on what I've heard and read about Micale, very pleased with that appointment. Watters wanted him on the coaching panel last year.....
Hope he has a match day role.

I have no idea of who the guy is, but my first thought was, is he an old west aussie friend of watters?

Quite a few of the boys I have coached are now at East Perth. They all speak extremely highly of him. He is a hard task master but has the ability to get inside a kids head, to see what makes him tick. He has brought a couple of kids I know back on the straight and narrow road after they drifted off to the dark side.

I think he is a great appointment. Great nurturer...,proven and solid skills and development coach (the role he did at the Eagles)
AS far as WA Inc goes.. always better to employ the devil you know if they're capable of the task at hand.

What? Gary Ayres hasn't been involved at AFL level since 2007 when he was sacked from Essendon. What's your logic there?

i totally agree about the afl, which is the point i am trying to make. my point is at least gary ayres has coach his VFL side to a grand final and a flag with no AFL listed players. has micale ever done the same thing? has he done it recently?

my point is i dont think this is the best available person and even if you rule out recent afl experience, there are better candidates available in the VFL/WAFL/SANFL (although i was hoping for someone who had very recent experience at the highest level).

to me the appointment is more about making the VFL alignment work, than developing talent.

We already have done work to integrate Sandy into the senior development. The academy is more about nurturing the players with a more holistic approach is what I was lead to believe. Something like personal development, strategy to maximise playing potential and improvement and oversee their pathway from being a reserves player into a senior member. Less footy related than simply working on skills, more advocating and assisting them to reach potential.

that was my impression of the role- oversee the whole development of younger players-
we already have a former senior coach in position at the club with Laidley.

Hi 'facto, I don't know much about our new patrol boat skipper, but what I've read sounds pretty good... getting into young blokes' heads and helping them get sorted, eh...? We could have used him over a few recent preseasons...

First head to get inside of... Rhys Lightning... convince that bloke that he could be anything... make Rhys believe!
Second... Ahmed... you do have a left foot!
Third... Grammy... it is still 2009!
Fourth... Roo... it is still 2009!
Fifth... Raph... it is still 2009 Preliminary Final, all games are played at Subi, you do have awareness of blokes tackling from behind you!
Kosi... it is still mid 2005!
Lenny... carry on... :D

As for Conan... please..., nooooooo, never!

Please never forget how when the Hillbillies were in their darkest hour, he turned and walked out... to what he assumed would be premiership success tapping into the wealth available to the Crones.

And how did the Crones go under Conan? Yep, ended up bordering on dysfunctional. When Craig took over, the same list suddenly started winning and sitting top of the tree...

Our mighty Saintas have had our own brush with treachery by a coach... but at least one dfference though..., our treasonous coach could acutally coach...

Sorry, long memories here from this poster..., forgiveness sure, it's on his conscience not mine..., but future trust, no not ever... not after what your Conans (and Lyin$) have done.

It's Dave, man. Will you open up? I got the stuff with me! -------Who?

this bloke has had sustained success and i think if you put his accolades up against Ayres they certainly stack up quite well but the biggest part is that Scott obviously thinks he can work well with him and he is extreamly good with young talent. whats the big wrap on Ayres? yes he has won the flag without afl players but also he has complete control and dosn't have to loose he best players every week so id say in way it would be easier giving the right recruitment and these players stay for a lot longer in his team and get to know his system.

I was speaking to a guy today who played at junior level with Rod Owen and he said he was the most talent player he'd seen in a long footy career. Said he could have been an absolute champion but couldn't keep it together long enough. Sad he's one of the guys i remember as a kid that offered real hope after years of dismal performance as a club.
