Salary cap
With Goddard gone, riewoldt playing for half of last years payment and Kosi resigned for what you would think would amount to the proceeds of the weekly meat raffle - things must looking ok to trade now ???

Re: Salary cap
both kosi and gram had clauses in their previous contracts to activate a 2013 wage. These were both signed in late 2009? meaning there's every chance they're both on good coin for 2013
oh when the saints
Re: Salary cap
Well documented that kosi is on a modest wage this year and no chance gram is on what he previously was on. Let's go shopping!

Re: Salary cap
I did detect a bit of a gleam in the Pelican's eye during his Goddard interview...
I think he's up for a big few weeks & is looking forward to it.

Re: Salary cap
yep - this is true. kosi and Gram remain on big coin for 2013 (hard to believe but sadly true)class of 2010 wrote:both kosi and gram had clauses in their previous contracts to activate a 2013 wage. These were both signed in late 2009? meaning there's every chance they're both on good coin for 2013
Whoever signed these agreements should be shot at dawn.
anyone who doesnt think this is a major factor why BJ left has rocks in their head.
workplaces are about pecking order and what you get paid relative to your workmates. when this is out of whack - people get their noses out of joint.
BJ knew Kosi and gram were on big 4 year deals and knew they were both producing far less than him - hence he felt under-valued and aggrieved at Saints - this was the BIG sticking point on 3 years vs 4 in his mind. It wasnt about money per se - it was about BJ saying 'so you guys seriously wont offer me the same as gram and kosi?? - umm f*ck you!"
As I said whoever signed Kosi and Gram to 3+1 on big coin should be shot at dawn.
this is exactly what BJs mger was referring to when he said the saints had "list mgt problems"
anyone unable to connect the dots on this is living somewhere on a river in Egypt.

Re: Salary cap
are we certain that the Kosi and Gram contract are at the same $$$ value- I would have thought there would be a trigger for another year but is there a chance it was at an agreed $$ not the same $$$ value- remembering that we only paid half of Kosi's under the veterans rules,.

Re: Salary cap
I think we can safely say that we'd have close to $1mil free now. Goddard was probably on 500-550k and Roo is now on 500 less, while Peake was probably on about 150-180k. Guys like Siposs and Stanley would have signed on decent money but no more than 300k each, and I can't think of anyone else whose pay packet would have gotten bigger this year.
Unless we have a player lined up to screw over his own club Luke Ball style, I don't see us spending that money this year though. The free agency pool is crap and we don't have a whole lot of trade bait. I expect us to chase free agents hard in 2013.

Re: Salary cap
Have it on very good authority that Kosi took a pay cut to help the club out. He is definitely earning a lot less next year.
A couple of our other players have also done the same thing during the year.
The club basically wants no-one paid over $600-650k per year, but everyone buying in to stay together i.e. Geelong.
Don't forget the veterans list changes that take place effective next year, where any player over 30 on your list can have $100k of their salary not counted in the salary cap. We have Milne, Hayes, Fisher, Riewoldt, Blake and Koschitzke who are all 30+ in 2013. Which means we can put $100k x 6 outside of the salary cap = $600k.
Make no mistake, we had the room to pay Goddard $700k per year for 4 years if we wanted ... purely a business decision on our part, we have room in the cap and would still have had room in the cap if he had accepted our $1.9m offer.

i recall that. but heavily reduced back then was still massive i think.SainterK wrote:Yeah I don't buy Kosi is on big money, he signed a heavily reduced contract in 2010 anyways didn't he?
either way the watters/pelchen combo has really changed things for the better . i think the last 12 months the saints mgt has been tremendous.
we may well rise sooner than predicted. maybe caddy on 300k x 3 would be fair. roo has come back down to the pack in $- so we now wont have any "stars" on outlying coin.
i assume nicky dal might become our highest paid player now?

Re: Salary cap
word was the over $500- be it what ever- was going to make Bj the highest paid at the club, - so no way they would be looking to pay near the $$ Bombers are
and the low figure that was being bandied was indicating that Bj was on around $450 ..
so he maybe doubling his income--

Re: Salary cap
I wouldnt consider paying Caddy $300,000 first year up after not doing much in his short time in the AFL smart management... Perhaps incentive based or re-asses after a year or 2, but if his justification is to want to come home to Vic, then the $'s shouldnt matter as much until he's proven himself a little...Con Gorozidis wrote:. maybe caddy on 300k x 3 would be fair.

On Caddy, I think the only way to get him to agree to a trade to StK is to offer him more than Nth & Geel are offering. Something between 250-300k is very good coin for a 2nd year player with 20 odd games under his belt but that is what we'll have to be prepared to do. I think the trip to Seaford may really work against us...
I agree that we're building up the coffers for a big crack in 2013/14 at GC & GWS kids that are keen to come home.

Re: Salary cap
Heavily reduced indeed would have been massive. He would have had an enormous contract after his amazing month in 2005 and everyone thought it was only a matter of time until he did that on a regular basis. He had a very good year in 2009 though and still would have been on good money. I'd say he was commanding 600+ after 2005 (when plenty of opposition clubs were after him), so heavily reduced might have meant 500k.Con Gorozidis wrote:i recall that. but heavily reduced back then was still massive i think.SainterK wrote:Yeah I don't buy Kosi is on big money, he signed a heavily reduced contract in 2010 anyways didn't he?

Re: Salary cap
Again, why this obsession with Caddy? From what I've seen, he's not worth offering more than any other average, 20-game player.
Pfffffft............

Re: Salary cap
What we need is someone decent to do a Luke Ball and say they want to be traded to St Kilda. I hope this is what they mean when they say they want to trade aggressively this year. Approach some contracted players to come forward. Otherwise we have some good picks to use. I just hope we dont waste them.
